A Glorious Nl lit for Council HlitflV.
The republican demonstration last
night was indeed one which would ex
haust the adjectives usually applied to the
description of such attaint. The day itself
was largely given over to the making of
preparations for the evening. There was
little business done , many of the citi
zens wore busy decorating stores and residences
idencos , and others wore busy in arrang
ing details for the parade.
There wore many strangers in the city
during the day , the morning trains bring
ing them in on every road by the hun
dred , so that long before the hour
for the parade , there were
crowds upon the streets , almost blocking
the sidewalks.
The decorations and illuminations wore
extensive indeed. The business portions
of the city wore a flutter of streamers
and a blaze of candles. Broadway , Main
and Pearl streets wore the brightest gala
adornments.
On Pearl street the newspaper offices
wore dressed up. Tin : BEG stood out In
largo letters of light formed of Japanese
lanterns , and the windows were Illumi
nated in red , white and blue , while the
picture of James G. Blaine , surrounded
with the national colorsoccupied a prom
inent place. The Evening Herald
oflico was Illuminated from top
to bottom , trimmed with
Blaine and Logan flagging and largo pic
tures of the two candidates. Dr. R.
Rico's oflico was also finely adorned , and
among the other places on the street wore
the oflico of A. B. Walker , D. W. Bush-
noil's store , the Little Gem restaurant ,
Odell & Day's oflico , Dr. Woodbury's of-
flee , the Council Bluffs Insurance com
pany , J. W. and E. L Squires. Smith
A Crittendon's wholesale dry gooda house
presented a beautiful appearance , the
whole front being a blaze of light and
color. In Bayliss park every tree bore
lanterns. The court house was illu
minated from basement to dome. Kiui-
ball & Champ's real estate oflicca , Rus
sell itCo.'a great agricultural warehouse
and the McClurg cracker factory wore
also specially attractive.
It would be impossible to give all the
decorations on Main street. Among the
specially noticeable onoa wore those of
the American Express company , Smith
& Towsleo , D.V. . Bushiit-11 , Grandy &
Co. , W. S. Homer & Co. , Poregoy &
Moore , Jacqucnim & Co. , the poatofllco ,

The decorations wore grtaily varied , and
very beautiful , and score 01 other busi
ness buildings wore adorned simply with
a few flags.
The decorations were not confined
altogether to buildings owned or occupied
by republicans , numbers of democratic
citizens very magnanimously helping in
making the city look beautiful and in extending -
tending an hospitable reception to the
visitors , as c'tizsns if not as party men.
Broadway never prcBuntod a more
brilliant appearance. The Pacific house
had its front very nicely decorated with
campaign bunting , and brightly illumi
nated. DoVol As Wright's store was
also elaborately adorned. Among other
places of special decoration were the

An Interview ullli an Ifimncnl Sa-
vn 11 r.
From the San I'raiicisco Chronic'o.
Dr. Ottmar Kern , Capt , Joseph Ber-
trand and M. Canton Ducho , prominent
European scientists connected with the
publication of La Lwnicrc Elcvlricquc
a periodical published in Pans and de
voted to the interests of electric science ,
are at the Palace Hotel. In an interview
with a Chronicle reporter yesterday Dr.
Kern slid :
"European telegraph 13 instruments
difler materially from those in this coun
try. In Europe most of the lines are
under government control , and as they
iuaist upon keeping a record of every
thing transmitted , wo use the Ilugles
printer and Baudot sextuple printer in
stead of the Morse system of transmit
ting by sound. The telephone in Europe
is not used to so great an extent as hoio ,
butit works moro perfectly. Wo uao
two wirnn instead of completing the cir
cuit through the ground return current ,
and by that moans wo got less induction.
But the chief difference between the
electric science in Europe and in America
is this : Hero moat of the experiments
of to-day are conducted with a view to
ilio perfection of the electric light , but
in Europe our energies are mainly
directed to the oonsidoralioh of
the problems of the accumulation and
transmission of power and its application
to railr > ads machinery , domestic and
oven military purposes. In this connec
tion the Paris house of the Rothschilds
has entered into an agreement with Dr.
IIor/ , under which experiments are being
conducted on a largo scale. The contract
callo for the transmission of 200-horao
power from Croll , on the Northern rail
road , which is owned by M , Rothechild ,
to the railroad workshops in I'ario , a dis
tance of fifty-one miles , with a loan of
power not to exceed HO per cent. Mr.
Rothschilds lira contributed to the enter
prise 1,000,000 , francs about § 200,000.
The work is being conducted by Marcel
Doprcz , in my opinion the greatest
scientific engineer now living. In the
event of the experiments proving success
ful , as I have no doubt they will , com
panies will bo formed by Dr. Her/ : and M.
Rothschild , and nearly every waterfall on
the continent may bo used as a source
for the transmission of power all over
the country. There is nothing impracti
cable about It In Germany there are
already six lines of railroad run by elec
tricity , and the time is surely coming
when improvement ! ! in the modes ot
accumulating the transmitting power
will lead to the utmost universal use of
electricity for nearly every purpose to
which steam power io now applied. "

means of inflicting capital punishment

tystom of telegraphy for your largo cilloa
you have great dillicultioa to contend
with. In 1'aris our system enables us to
carry our wires underground , while they
are suspended practically in the same
manner as if they were in the air , but if
you attempt to carry the wires hunched

yet discovered will prevent an induction ,
which will bo ao great as to render the
