SUNDAY OAMP MEETING ,
UrlRhtcr Wonthor nnil a TmrKO At-
tcmlftnuo or
When Kldor Tyler tolled the riainj
boll at10 : ! thia moraine ; , a half hour earlier
lior than the programme called for , Tiir
Bin ; reporter gazed from his tent on n
cloudy sky and an array of damp canvass
abodes. Hero and there a light allowed
where aomo zealous worshipper. ' replied
to the summons promptly , and ono after
another the tenta became Illuminated.
The simple loilot of the camp was soon
performed and at f > o'clock the social
mooting , which Is act on the programme
for 5:30 : was begun with a good atton
danco.
Still , after hia time for rising , the sun
hung behind dark and water soaked
clouds. Now and again a few drops ol
rain would fall as if to remind man of the
general , submersion to which , as the
Seventh Day Advonlista believe , all nature
turo ia doomed. The ground waa wet ,
slippery aud nature seemed gloomy and
morose , but the hearts of the simple mind
ed worshippers of the touta were bravo
and they promptly obeyed tbo summon *
to worship and joined in the songs ol
praise. But in a short timu the outer
gloom was dispelled. The sun , whoso
raya had been suppressed for some days ,
came out smiling and joyful and east his
benignant face on the surroundings. The
largo tent was opened at the sides to per
mit the air and sunlight to cuter.
THE SOC1M. MKHTINO.
Elder Hallonbock opened the social
mooting by singing a hymn and immodi' '
ntely the entire congregation joined.
This waa succeeded by a diacourao from
Elder A. J. Cudnoy , under whoso direc
tion the camp meeting Is being hold. The
older spoke for some time on the religious
questions nearest his readers nnd ex
pounded , in n forcible manner the tenons
of the creed which they professed. After
this the testimony of the congregation
was received. This consisted in the
sovor.il members , or such as chose , rising
aud stating brielly the state of mind in
which they found themselves , aa a result
of the devotions of which they have had
the bonoGt. Men and women , young
and old , arose and stated their feelings.
LATUK MATTERS.
This continued until seven o'clock
when breakfast was served in the art
hall by Mrs. Chambers. Aftur every ,
body had partaken of the ample repast ,
family worship Tas had in the tents , and
many of the attendants read Tin : Buu , a
largo supply of BEIS : being on hand In
the book tent ( which , by the way ia su
pervised by Mr. and Mrs. Hue , of Fre
mont. )
A businoaa moating of the conference
was hold at nine o'clock at which all the
delegates were present. This continued
until ten o'clock when preaching in the
main tent by Klder Hallenbeck and in
the Scandinavian tent by Elder Olson begun -
gun and continued until noon.
The afternoon influx of visitors from
the city began almost as soon as people
may bo reasonably supposed to have fiu-
ished dinner. A plontifu1 propoition of
soldiers from the post was present , many
sitting in the little wooden building
which aorvea aa the judgea' atand dur
ing the races , some lounging
ahout and aomo in the largo
tent , listening to the sermons. Groups
of pink cheered and bright eyed young
ladiea , on whoso account alone the re
porter hopes the end of the woild la not
very near , wandered about the fields.
Stages from town drove up with their
loads of living freight , and added
their contributions to the attendance.
The reading tent and book-stora were
crowded. Children clustered , kicked
and tumbled on the grasa. Over all , a
degree of quiet and order prevailed
which did the utmost credit to the
worshipping campers. On Saturday
evening ono city rullian , made trouble
aud lie was kept over night in a tent , and
released yesterday morning on his prom
ise to go and return no moro. Ilo
claimed to have been robbed of his re
volver by some ono somewhere. But
hia appearance- scarcely such as to
encourage belief in his having been the
possessor of any properly , personal or
otherwise , "revolving or stationary , for
seine time ,
At the usual hour in the afternoon
aorviccs were hold in the largo pavilion.
Thithorivard u largo congre
gation waa attracted to listen to the
preaching of Elder Farnsworth. The ol
der apoko of the Sabbath and otatod
why the seventh day should bo observed
instead of the firat. Ilia words were lis
tened to in rapt attention.
TJIK SERMON.
It was , ho claimed , not roseonablo that
the seventh day should bo called the .low-
iah sabbath. The aabbath was a divine
inspiration , devised nliko for Gentile and
for Jew. It waa the Lord's. The com
mandment was to keep the seventh day ,
the Sabbath day of thoLord. The worda
were "my Sabbath" and to Interpolate
any other would bo insrniiatentwitti wha
followed where the Lord says ' 'the aev-
onth day ia the Sabbath of the Lord thy
God. "
The sermon thua continued for nearly
two hours and hold these present in rapt
attention. The usual number of the
congregation had been greatly augmen
ted by the visitors from the city and some
whoso love for sacred things did not ap
pear too conspicuous on their first arrival
found pleasure in liatnlng to the preach-
or'a worda. "Thoy came to scoff and
stayed to pray. "
Then after the sermon was
over a lull took place In which the usual
pleasures of visiting and conversation in
cidental to camp life , were indulged in.
The hoarao erica i f the hackoneora aa
they shouted , "Hero you are now for
down town , " alone broke the atillnots.
There appeared to bp even something
musical and eloquent in the silence as if
the remains of the dinging and preaching
were still hovering about. The sun
shoiio in its brightness over the scone ,
but it was throughout pleasantly cool.
Thus the programme was proceeded
with , and when the reporter finished his
ropoit at about six o'clock in the evening
a largo audience wait listening to Elder
Oleson preachin g in llio largo pavilhon.

impaired vision nnd n slightly defective
memory , enjoys excellent health. Ho

A reporter had n lone ; aud pleasant
chat yesterday with the general , who ,
when ho rose , towered considoraply
above his visitor , the height being G feet
I ! inches , and his figure still erect nnd
soldierly. Ho injured his log a few
weeks ago , nnd it is a little lame , but
treats the matter lightly. Ho spoke
with modesty about his exploits , and
several times allowed Mrs. Cyr to relate
incidents of his long and adventurous
career.
"I was in command in Missouri when
the war broke out/'aaid the general dur
ing the conversation , "and had I not
been relieved by President Lincoln in
May , 1801,1 am stiro there would have
been no blood shed in thatstato ; but I
never blamed Mr. Lincoln , for ho and I
were old friends. So much political
pressure was brought to boar upon him
by Frank P. Blair and others that I sup-
poao ho had to relieve mo. And yet , "
continued the general , smiling , "Mr.
Lincoln never saw mo without reminding
mo that I once saved his life. "
"How was that , general ! "
'Well , " said the general , laughing.
"Mr. Lincoln was captain of a company
of volunteers nnd I was captain of n com
pany of regulars during the Black Hawk
war. I remember well how Captain Lin
coln used to como to our rendezvous ,
General Taylor's headquarters , and toll
stories that amused us immensely. Ho
used to Ho on the graes , and very fre
quently _ would say , 'That reminds mo , '
and begin a funny story ,
"Ono day Lincoln said to mo , 'I say ,
Hamey , lot's pick out four or u'vo good
shots from our commands and go gunning
for Indians on our own hook. ' 'All right ,
Lincoln'eald I , 'but do yon know any

much , but I'm n pretty good shot.1
'That will do to start on,1 said I , 'but let
mo toll you ono thing never look for n
redskin in front of you ; look out for your
flanks. ' Well , wo started out , nnd soon
carnu in eight of redskins. All of a sud

saw an Indian drawing a bead on Lincoln.
As quick as I could possibly do BO , I
leveled my rlllo and firod. 1 didn't hit

away. Ever after that Captain Lincoln
insisted that I had saved hia life. "

It is impossible , within the li nits of
this article , to give moro than a moro outline -
line of Gon. Harnoy'a distinguished
<
career. Ho wns coinminamnod second

nnd subsequently captured twoof Lititte'.i
piratical vessels. Ho aorvod on the stall
of Gon. Jnckson , who , when president in
18.'ttt , mndo him paymaster of the army.
In August , 1SI10 , ho wns made lieuten
ant-colonel of the second dragons. Ho
fought gallantly through the Mexican
war , but early incurred the enmity of
Gon. Scott who endeavored to deprive
him of hia command , but wns frus
trated by William L. Marcy , secretary of
state. Ho disobeyed an _ order once nnd
achieved n victory , in view of which hia
impetuosity was ovorlookcd.
Prior to nnd long nftor the Mexican
war ho was actively engaged lighting hos
tlio Indiana , in which ho won oxtnumlin

expedition against Brighnm Young in
1858 , but learning that Harnoy intended
