OMAHA DAlbY JiEE - MONDAY SEPTEMBER , 1884 MIDNIGHT MELEES , Two Slabbing Affrays in TMs Cily in Quo Night , .Miko Murpliy Seriously , If Not Fami ly AVounilctl-Tom O'llrlcn Cut lu tlio Ann , Karly Saturday evening a stranger entered tored Sam Boatty's saloon on Twelfth between Douglas and Farnam and asked the proprietor to keep his pistol for him until called for , at the same time passIng - Ing it over the counter. Shortly after 12 o'clock the same night the stranger re-appeared and asked Boatty for his revolver - volvor saying ho was then ready to go homo. While ho was patting the pistol in his pocket Lwry Casey , an unsavory character well known to the police of the city , Mike Sullivan ai\d n man nam ed Todd entered the saloon , which at the time was nearly filled with men. Casey seeing the man pocketing his revolver said , "I can make a gun 'play as quick as anybody , " in n very , in sulting nnd defiant manner. In a moment a general light , cauaod by this remark , took place between the party headed by Casey and a party of aovon or eight strangers who happened at that time to bo in tlio front of the aaloon. Casey was knocked down , kicked and terribly beaten in thog melee , his face be ing Bounded almost beyond recognition by his friends. Todd and Murphy , ncc- ing the same fate awaited them , started for the front door , but knocking over the acroen against it , were uuablo to make their exit. They then Irtad the side on trance. Todd gained the street all right , but Murphy ran directly into the same crowd on the outside , and after being beaten and kicked by them , was given a stab in the abdomen by n pockot-knifo , making a deep and probably fatal wound. Murphy broke away from his antagonists and ran down Douglas street to the Unted States hotel , where ho sank down from exhaustion. Hero ho was found by a stranger , who called the police , The Trouudcd man was taken to the city jail , where his wound was dressed by Doctors Crowell and Ayors. llo was. later in the night , removed to St Joseph's hospital , where ho now lies. Yesterday evening ho was feeling quito comfortfort- able and was able to converse frpoly. Ho denies having complicity in tha fight , but says it was started by Casey , who at tempted to carry it through alouo. The physicians think it highly improbable that ho will recover as it ia thought ia- ilamation will ensue. Murphy is a young Irishman who has been in thin country only four years. Ho has been at work until a few days ago for a man named Elmore beyond the lead works , ainco which time ho has been doing nothing , li iCasey was taken by the police to the city jail , but was released yesterday morning. It appears that ho was con siderably intoxicated Saturday night and was taken part way homo shortly "before the fight by a policeman. Bpatty , the proprietor of the saloon , was also arrested for complicity in the crime , it being thought at the time that ho handed the pistol to the stranger to use , but on making his statement of how it happened was also released. The fight had no sooner ended than all the combatanta with the exception of Casey fled in different directions and wo o lost in the darkness. Ono of thorn , however - 4 over , was pursued down Eleventh past the Elkhorn house where ho wns caught but escaped from his captor by leaving half of hii ) alpaca coat behind. "a Murphy says ho never saw these men before but could identify the ono who 4V stabbed him. A SECOND AFFKAY. Shortly after eleven o'clock Saturday night n man with his right arm all cover ed with blood entered Dr. Swotnam s oflico and said ho had como for surgical V aid. Upon examination it was found ho had been stabbed through the fleshy part of the arm by a sharp knife. The man , whoco name is Tom O'Brien , and is an an employe of Pat Gibbon , oatd ho was in the saloon on the southwest corner of Twelfth and Douglas , when ho was sot upon by three or four roughs who , be sides beating him , had stabbed him as before stated. Ilis wound upon examin ation , was found to bo in no wise dan geroua ; The nerves , however , leading t ( the two laat fingers were severed , whicl wi'.l cause him to lese their use. Even on Satuiday thcrowasan excellent showing in the several departments , but they were all greatly increased on yesterday , nnd are now quite complete. On Saturday night und yesterday machinery , live stooij and other articles continued to arrive every moment and the entries have been far ahead of the average year. In live stock alone , for instance , the Hat is ono- third larger than uaual and although the now otalla built on thu south aide and in the northwest corner have greatly added to the capacity , every ono lias been taken and the managers have positively had to refuse n great many applications. The display of agricultural products and live stock this year will bo the principal features of the show. On Sat urday night Sherman avenue was crowd ed all night with cattle on their way out and yesterday several special trains wore run up on the Omaha and St. Paul road with stock which had come from a distance. The county exhibits will bo the finest and beat provided for of any year thus far , especially these of Hall , Washington and Burt , whoso quarters are already well filled. The first county named has the old Union Pacihc headquarters for its display and will fill every shelf in the building ; the latter , in thefr own house will make a bettor ex hibit than over before. In the way of machinery there has boon ICES prompt ness , and though there is already a great deal up and in working order there will bo a great deal more to-day and to-morrow. Art Hall has been better looked after than any other department , and is quite well filled ! in fact , wore no further additions made , it would bo more than cred itable. . Floral Hall , too , is in good ahapo and among the exhibits , those of plants , ( lowers and fruit are the best and excel thoao of former years , two to ono. Seine exhibitors who have attracted the greatest attention in pro- viousfair , notablyDowoy A Stone , Peycko Bros , and the railway companies are making no display at all this year or are backward in fitting up their headquarters. There are any number of refreshment standa and the side shows occupy a very prominent place , ono of them being located east of the grand stand , whore its canvas obstructs the view not a little. Newspaper row ia on the right of the main entrance , going in , and hero the tents of TJIK BKI ; , Rural Nebraska , Christian Hour , Iowa and Nebraska In surance company , etc. , are up and show up to greater advantage than last year. A number of private tents for camping purposes are to bo soon in the press headquarters and indicate a more than ordinary interest in the proceeiJint's of the coming week. Yesterday was ushered in by a shower of rain , which solved to lay the dust , af ter which the day turned out clear and fine. There was quite a largo attend ance of visitors in the afternoon , over ninety dollars being taken in at the tjato , outside of season tickets. Tlio piomiso for the week being a good ono , is lirat-clasa in every particular and the va rious ollicors are kept very busy in ad justing things EO that all will run smoothly. There will bo two races nnd a chariot race today and the Hit of amusements for the week will bo very full. People ran from their dwellings to ascertain the cause and were rewarded for their pains to see a great cloud of dust just opposite the Oanfiold house on Ninth street. It appears that seine 0110 for a joke had placed a railroad torpedo on the street car track , and the car mnning over it had caused the explosion , The torpedo do was a strong ono and throw n part _ of ) the case containing the fulminate into every direction. A couple of the pieces struck ono of the horses , injuring it BO badly that it had to bo taken to the sta bles. The driver and all the people lB ln the car were somewhat scared , but be yond that no harm was dono. Mattie D.
