Ghost stories have been told and roac for many long years and yet have los none of their interest and many peoph are moro firm In their belief In ghosti and spirits to-day than over before People there are in this city who claiii to nightly hold owcot communion will those who have gene bjforo and who arc known to the great masses only by the tombstones which mark what should bt their final resting place , or the goot works which they did whilo-still sojourn' ors in this dreary vale of tears , Yet thii is a vale of tears which has eunshiiu enough in it to cmao all to want to remain < main , unless perhaps , it is some old , disgruntled crank , who is disgusted with himself and everybody around him and over whoso grave naught but crocidile tears would fall. It has been some little time since Omaha has been able to claim a genuine haunted house , but that time has now arrived if wo can take the word , of five different families who have tried to live in the dwelling where airy and mistj objects have chosen to take up then abode. This house is a little cottage located upon Dodge street hill , nearly opposite the high school grounds. Recently five different families have moved into the house and moved out again. Thuy would remain in the building just ono night and that was enough of that kind of experience - porionco to last thorn a lifo timo. Ono or two of them have soon fit to giyo a de scription of the workings of the infernal things , whatever they are. After retiring for the niwht they would bo awakened by strange noises , and ah at once the doors , which had been bolted and barred , would tly open. A cold wave , like a breeze from an ice berg would float into the room. Footsteps - stops could bu heard and all at once a cold , clammy hand would bo laid upon the face of the person or persons occupy ing the building and then as mysterious ly ai it came it would go. Four families , ouo directly after an- olhor , loft the place , being utmblo to endure - duro the otrango proceedings and pre ferring a bed upon the bosom of mother earth with the blue canopy of heaven for a covering than a princely habitation with imps of hell , tor ouch they must be , as no good , well mannered spirit would force itself wnoro it was not wanted They had all gone and the house stood tonantlcBS and alone and it is supposed that the phoata held high carnival within those wall ? . No renter could be found und the pnca of rent was reduced. Finally a man appeared upon the scone who had more sand than anybody , llo wai not afraid of ghosts und ho had huiird lota about them but had never &ocn any. Ho was firm in hia belief that it was all in the imagina tion of weak minded men and women and any ono who had as much heart as a chicken wouM never bo trou- alod by anything of the kind. The price of rent was agreed upon , and the bravo hearted inuii moved into the haunted houso. All day long ho worked around the place and saw nothing to indicate that it would not bo peaceful and quiet at nizht. However , that there might bo no tricks played upon him , ho had baits placed upon the inside of the doors. Upon retiring at night ho locked the doors and then bolted the inside bolts and also nailed down the windows. Ho ar rayed himself in his night-clothes , and , turning down thu light quite low , ho got into bod. For sometime ho lay and lis tened but not a sound , other than what is usually heard , reached his oar. Ho patted himaell upon tbo back , and tickled iiimsolf under thu chin , and said , "I told you so , " when all at once his solf-con- ratuhitiona were brought to a sudden termination. A ntrango sound was heard and notwithstanding tliu extra bolta , the doors swung upon their hinges and that cold air , like a wave of death , swept into the room. Ho plainly felt it upon his chock and his heart beat faster as ho thought possibly thcro might bo some thing in this ghost business after all. Soon ho heard a footfall and his eyes were strained in the direction of the open door. At first nothing appeared , but soon by the flickerit g rays of the lamp ho could see the outlines of a man's loriu. lie was now quito thoroughly frightened , but ho said within himself , "I will find out what that it. " Summon ing allhi | self command bo nhoutod"Who is there I'1 A groan was the only answer. Again ho put the < [ uuatum and again came the same answer. As ho guzod , the thing , whatever it was , slowly advanced towaid him. Ho crouched down in bed awaitii'g thofinalo. Nearer , and nearer it came until it stood by his bedside. Slowly it put forth its hand and the cold , clammy lingers rested upon thu t > roiv of the victim. A chill like the cMl of doith ran over his body and hia blood scomc d to freezu in his veins. Ho waa determined how ever to mnlco r.n effort to utinmsk the in truder and natisfy himself that it was a myth , an ullo delusion. With a spring lie grabbed for the extended arm but ere his Imml reached the place where it had been , it hud gene ami only space was within his reach. This was to much for him. Ilia hair stood on end , his eyeballs rolled forth from tlioir sockets nud looked like huge saucers , great drops of sweat stood out upon his brow , his teeth chattered and his power of speech was gono. At last ho had learned the truth. It was really a fact , ghosts are a reality and spirits leave the upper or lower world to roam arouud this i earth and make life a burden to man , It is needless to tay that ho got out of taat house ilmt night and only returned once moro and that vrns the following tiny when ho loaded his h usohold goods into a wnu'im and moved them elsewhere , cohtont \ \ ith one night in n house which is haunted by u gemilno ghost and ono too , which dftius bolU and bars und has iion-gtird for a man'a nervous ajstem. The house in nov Vacant and bids fair to remain ao until tliii mystery , for such it' renlly ia , can bu satisfactorily ex plained , I A party of young men who nro very desirous of seeing ivgunuino nhost have rondo arrangements .bo BJ cud Saturday in the house and aoo if they can- 'V ' not unravel the " "mystery. It might be well to add that the young lady friends of thcso daring follows nocd not look for them next Sunday evening as usual , ns they will not bo nblo to got their hair to lie down for at least a week after the ter rible fright which is awaiting thorn. If there is a good live phoat in thai lionao it might bo well for the thing to make a trip down town and let every body got n Rood look at it. A oorrrct Statement. To the IMItor of TUB UKK.
