" The funeral of Mrs. Dr. Rico took place yesterday afternoon and was largely ly attended by friends whoso tcndorost sympathy and deepest sorrow has boon called forth by the sad event , D. Keller , who a few days ago bought an interest in the Phiunix saloon , has already withdrawn , ho dooming the buai ness a little too risky under the prohibit - t on law , and some of his friends urging him not to engage in it. Williams , Andrew Fitzgerald , 12. J. Ab bott , John Fox , John Stagg and William Wycoir. Mayor Vaughan may bo doing sonn good advertising for Council Bluffs in tin Now York papers , but when ho givci such great prominence and lays so mud stress on the claim that Council Bluffs is the only city in Iowa openly violating the prohibitory law , it is difficult to see where it tends to help the sale of bonds A heavy-set man , who is called "tho doctor , " took a tumble down the stair way of the Oroslon house , Thursday night , cutting quite a gash in his fore head , necessitating surgical attention , Ho was not so badly hurt , however , but what ho was able to bo out yesterday , strolling along Broadway , without coul or vest , but enough court-plaster to make up , and in a condition to tumble down ctaira again. When the train from Lincoln was changing about for the return trip at the dummy depot yesterday afternoon , the engine in backing up the baggage car , sent it with such force ogainat the bump er at the end of the track by the depot platform , as to break the bumper and send it off the track. Au express wagon standing near was mashed , but the car as was not Injured , n. M. Page , the boas car repairer at the transfer , with a gang of men had to work for two hours or moro to got the car sot back and matters lighted again. Tno new city directory , after a long delay , has at last boon iisucd , It places the population of Council Bluffa at 20- , 500 , but the book is far from what n oity of that size should produce. There have been a lack of public aupport t enterprise , and difficulty in BocurinAtipt vertisemonts and subscribers , but 'rtfflft ihis would have justified the pu1 'v' " - ' abandoning the scheme , ( not justify the produciug of so . n book. THE BKI : on Wednesday contained an account of Daniel Smith being confi- dencod out S285. The police hero seemed to take little stock in Smith's story , and thought the follow was sort of cranky. Perhaps they did not want to believe it , as the description given by him of the follows who fleeced him was sufllciontly accurate for the police to recognize the follows as being old-timers , members of a gang which has boon work ing in this vicinity for n long time , and who could have boon easily taken if the police hero had wanted so to do. It acorns that Low Fore who is in the employ - ploy of the Chicago , Milwaukee it St. Paul road as a detective , had boon laying for this gang of confidence men. Fore recently came hero , and has two broth ers hero , who are assisting him in his work , ono of them Will D. Fore , the other Charles Fore , the night watchman in the C. M. & S. P. yards. Fore wont at work on this confidence gang , and found that after victimizing Smith out of § 285 , they walked to the river , took a boat and thus wont across to Omaha. Smith , the victim , remained hero and kicked to the police in vain. . Ono of the gang of confidence men re turned to thia flido to watch Smith and see when ho left , and when it would bo safe to go to work again. In order to throw thorn off their guard Fore got his brother Will to start off with Smith on tlio Sioux City train. As soon as ho had loft , the confidence man who had boon watching him , hurried across the river to Dma'ia to inform his follows that the troubio was over and the coast clear. The same gang had before this boon trying to got Valentino , the detective at kho Union Pacific depot in Omaha , to stand .in with them , but ho had declined , but finally ho pretended to yield , in order to make their capture moro certain , and told thorn ho would not interfere with them. They accordingly gave him $20 as his share of the § 285 , of which Smith wag robbed. The gang wont to work on the Denver train Thurs day night. Fore , Valentino and several of the Omaha officers so planned together that they captured three of the party in the cars. On realizing that they were gobbled ono of them dropped a chock , and also a blank chock , to get them out of the way. They were picked up , however - over , and the men locked up. The chock dropped in the car was in the same hand writing as that by which Smith was vic timized , and in many ether respects was singularly similar. The check on which Smith was victimized road : $2,700. MINNEAPOLIS , Minn , , Aug. 2 , 1881. TJIK COJIMKHOIAL DANK : I'ny to O. M. Morgan or bearer twenty- Hcvuu hundred dollara. No. 47. ROVEII & Co , The chock dropped in the car road as follows : 82,700. MINNEAPOLIS , MINN. , Aug. 12,1881. TlIK UNION NATIONAL IIANK : Pay to O. M. Arthur or .boarer twenty- sovem lumdrod dollars , No17. . llomi & Co. A blank chock on the Kansas City was also dropped in the car , and picked up by the oflicors. : The follows gnvo their names as John Robinson , W. II. Halo and John Williams. Being satisfied that they were the ones that boat Smith out of his 8285 , Fore yesterday had the necessary papers made out , in formations being filed with Justice Schurz , and started for Dos Moincs to t a requisition on which ho expects to bring the trio to this city for trial. Foro's mother returned yesterday with the vic tim , Smith , the trip out of the city being simply a ruse to throw the gang off the track. It looks as if the gancj was going to got squeezed out this timo. It is to be hoped that if on examination they appear to bo guilty , that they will notbo allowed to got out of it as easily as others have before. Heretofore fellows have given bail to appear before the district court , and then jumped their bail , thus avoid ing getting sent over the road. The bail Is generally a few hundred dollars , and if this is forfeited and paid , ( it is not al ways paid , however ) it takes those fol lows only a few tricks to moro than make up the amount. ANOT1IK11 ( JAN Q. There is still another gang of those fol lows working moro or less in this vicin ity. Of this gang the ono called Bloom is perhaps the beat known by a number of the ollicors and perhaps all , knowing him. Two ether members of the ga are known as Tom Ponnygrass anil Chun" Andrews , or "Snido Fuko" Charlie , About three months ago Bloom succeeded in victimizing to a slight extent George W. Baylies , who keeps a store on South Main street. Bloom at that time represented himuolf as being a Captain Williams , from Kentucky , and convinced Baylias that ho know n num ber of the lattor's friends And relatives thoro. After gaining hia confidence ) ho wanted Baylias to cash a draft for him , but the latter having but little caah in the drawer , lie could not favor him , but lout him $1 50. The fellow gave security a plain ring , supposed to be gold , but proving to bo brass. Time passed on , and Thursday morning of thia week a gentlemanly.looKlng man appear ed at the store aim fell in convocation with Mr. Baylies' daughter , and tried to got her to cash a check , or lot him have aomo money on ono. Mr. Bay lias coining in recognized in the man none ether than his old friend Capt. Williams. The follow had changed his appearance , his gray whiskers were sheared off and hia moustache dyed black. Tlio fellow denied being the Kentucky captain , and after a little dis 5 pute ho skipped out toward the depot and doubtless took n train , ONB Or TJIK i'KUOS wINi | : > . The Fore family seem to bo having a pretty lively time of it. Olmrloa who is .night watchman at the Chicgtio & Milwaukee - waukeo yards was shot by car breakers stated in yesterday's morning BEK. ere was making the rounds in the yards and had just passed inspected the car in 2 Question , noticing that it was sealed securely , and lie had passed on a little distance , when he heard a slight noise , going bauk found that the car had 11 broken into , the cur-brenkurs cvi- lly having been secreted near by , 'to commence work as soon as the had passed along out of the 1 way , intending to s ( euro Jho plunder before fore ho got around again , but when ho returned turned ho throw his bnll's-oyo light Into the car to see who and what was thoro. As ho did so ono of the follows fired , the ball striking his loft arm , passing through between the two bones of the forearm The ground on which Fcro was standing was so low that his head juat came a little above the car lloor , and immediately after the shot two follows jumped from the car right onto him , tumbling him to the ground , and before ho could got up they were running , with a few rods the start , llo followed , drawing his revolver and firing throe times , but evidently not hitting them , for they speeded along , and got awny. The wound received by him does not provo a very serious ono , and ho will soon bo all right again. A SAD ENDING , An Attorney Downed l > y Drink In tlio Calaboose , John McCord , a prominent lawyer of Audubon died a moot miserable death Wednesday night. Ho has boon subject at times to heavy drinking , and when in thcso spoils has boon in the habit < sf con fining himself to hia room , and there drinking until ho had his spree out , or becoming too sick to spree moro. Ho had been on ono of thcso times for about two weeks , and had locked himself up in his room admitting no ono but a boy who brought him ice and whisky. Finally some of his friends with the oflicors broke into the room and took him to thq cala boose , and locked him up there , with the expectation of getting him sobered up. The poor maawas too far gone , howoror , and , death came to him about midnight. McCord was a prominent attorney and was engaged in the defense in the Jeffer son murder case.
