Stocks Quiet and strong. The fact that
there wuro no failures on account of the sus
pension of the Wall street bank had much to
do uith the strength of the market. Favora
ble reports from the west concerning the crops
und the movement of now grains also induced
purchasers for long account. At the opening
n majority of active shares were higher , but
before the first call the improvement was par
tially lot. Subsequently western ordora to
buy made their appearance , nnd there was an
advance of J to 2 ] . Near 2 p. in. a moderate
selling movement sot in , and there was a de
cline of i to 1 . In the filnl transactions
there was n fractional recover } ' ; the market
was very quiet , the Bales being the smallest for
some weeks past. The lameness of specula
tion was the subject of much comment in the
face of yesterday's bank failure. Compared
