FIZZLE AT FREMONT , The Itccont Uomoorntla lltxtlllcn lion A IifirRo Crowd but Hinall Entluislnsin ' ' . I'opplctou's Dig. appointing nnil Inconsist ent Fnr.MO.VT , Nmt. , July 22 , 1881. To atato with complete accuracy the result of the democratic ratification tncot ing which occurred on Saturday nigh would bo a hard matter. If it was the intontidn of these who had charge uf the matter to draw out a largo body of re- [ mblicans , then the mooting was a suo- COM. If , however , they expected to create any great amount of enthusiasm for Cleveland and llondricks , then thai i.irt of their programmo was a decided 'ailuro. As a matter of fact the mooting akon aa \rholo was a great disappoint ment. People were disappointed that tlr. Hunger cut his speech so short , for tadgo Savage was not able to keep his appointment , for the iudgo has many ad- nirora in Fremont in both parties. But ho people were most disappointed in A. ' . t'oppleton. Mr. Popploton had boon drortisod aa an orator nnd n thinker , nd the people who wont to hear him ox- looted something above the average cam- aigu stump speech. But they were oomcd to disappointment , for the best Hat could bo said of his speech is , _ that it vaa a disapointod harranguo withhout von the merit of being consistent. IIo did not attempt to discuss a single no of the questions which are to make up lie isauoa of the coming campaign , but lie whole burden of hia labored harangue was to show that the republican party is party of fraud and corruption and that liatthocountrycouldon ybeaavedthrough ; io election ot Cleveland and Hondricks Traud and corruption 1 This comes with nod grace from the lips of a man who ianda to-day the paid attorney of a cor- oration that has done more to corrupt tubllc morals , legislators and courts in his and other states than any other in- luouco under the sun. The corporation ias so unjustly w.rung from the toiling nassos their hard earned money , no cor- loration has boon so determined to shirk loir just responsibilities as the very ompauy whose legal and illegal advisor A. J. Poppleton is. Everyone well cnows the frauds that have boon porpot- atod upon the people of this state by 10 Union Pacific railroad. Everyone well knows of its discriminations against own and individuals ; everyone is fam- iar with its exorbitant rates of trans- > ortation ; everyone is familar with the on dollar a car bridge toll at Omaha ; voryono is familltar with the manner in which it has used money to carry state , ounty and city elections , and Mr. Pop- iloton muat also have known of all this , 'hen , why has ho kept quiet all those 'ears ? Why has ho not raised his voice gainst these crimes ? If corruption is istaateful to him why has ho compound- d these crimes by keeping silent about liom ? No ! it cannot have worn on his onscienco very hard , when for years it t has been transacted under his very ese and , no doubt , with his sanction. lo may rail at fraud and corruption to lia heart's content , but public opinion rill bo slow to give him credit for much lonesty , yet wo believe ho will got all ho osorves. What reform , what pure princi- ) loa can the peoplocxpcctfromaman who or the best part of his lifo has prostituted limself andhis intelligence to the use of corrupt and soulless corporation , who laa been paid his price and expects to do lie bidding of his master. Reformers never spring from such a source. Mr. Popploton had a good deal to say bout the republican machine , but ho arod not utter the truth and say to that udienco that Cleveland was the machine nominee , and that in order to glvo him lie nomination some of the most sacred ndividual rights were trampled under oot , and twenty-five of the Now York elogation were barred the rights of oting tor their choice. While Clovo- and was foisted upon the democratic tarty by the machine , Blaine was the hoico of the republican masses and was nominated iu spite of the machine. , Ho hold the republican party rosponsl- > lo for giving to railway companies largo and grants. Now ho could not have icon ignorant of the fact that , the very rst land over granted to a railway com- > any was passed upon by a democratic inuso , a democratic senate and oigned by tuchanan , a democratic president. But tnoro than this , this grant of land which was piven to the Illinois Central was engineered by two leading democratic postlcs , Douglas nnd llicardson , has the oputntion of being the completeat job of og rolling over carried on in the Ameri- an congress. So that whatever is per- Icious connected with the system of land ; ranis , the democratic party has the loner of being its orignator. The physical condition of the skull and rosabones of cipher alley was repeatedly oforrod to , whereupon the faithful would ororontly bow their heads in prayerful ubmisaion to the will of un all-wiso ora- , or. or.Carl Schurzand Cloorgo William Curtis were noble patriots who had left the larty of fraud and had joined the glo ipus band of pure honest democrats , 'his was Mr. Popploton'a opinion of democracy mocracy , but lie did not give Curtis' pinion of that party , which is as fol- OWfl ! "Wo are confrotod with the democrat' c party very hungry , and , as you may well believe , very thlra'y ; a party with- ut a single definite principal , a party without any distinct national fpolicy which it dares present to the country ; party which fell from power as a con- piracy against human rights and now ttompts to sneak back to power as conspiracy for plunder and spoils , " This is a "a sweet morsel which wo loartily commend to our democratic hero worshippers and hope it may prove a ootnlng potion to their disorganized tomacha. IIo had much tosay about'thojunprovon ' rauds in the theft of Louisiana and Flo- Ida , but not a word to say of the proven attempts to steal the electoral vote ot ) rogon. The inheritance of the doc- rlnea of Jefferson and Jackson by the lemocratic party were frequently alluded to , but the party platforms of 1804 "the war a failure , " and the opposition to the resumption efforts of the republicans ol .870 escaped his notice. The mantle ol great and good Tildcn had fallen upon Jlovoland , end to day ho stood the re- ormer par excellence of the ago , Mr. Popploton did not toll the ratifiers wheth er it was the vote of the five cent clause n the elevated railroad bill , or the vetoa of ( ho lessened hours of daily labor o car conductors , the moohanio'slion ] [ bill , the tenement cigar bill , Oh no , those roat reforms were not mentioned Cleveland was too much interested in the monopolies of tbo great city of Now York to have his reforms run this way , and fo tear of offense the orator of the occasion did not doaire to refer to them. Blaine , he admitted , was bright , emar nnd atrong , attached to himself friends was anxious to make a distinctive Amer ican policy , but ho thought it the duty uf the democrats to make a change only or exclusively for the sake of a change. On the whole , your correspondent believes - liovos that the democrats hereabouts were not well pleased with the effort , a loading - ing ono sayint ; to him that ho had mucl rather hoar the nU-inononoly doctrinna from Senator Van Wrck than from the paid attorney of the U. P. Ry. And 10 say I , ana so say they all , Peen Riciunn. A BBUTAL HUSBAND , N. B. Strong Abuses IIIB Fruulljr Drives Tlioni liYom the House. Last week an item appeared in these columns stating that a certain railroad man in this city had abused his wife and hat too while she was in the throes ol childbirth and after the death of the in- ant had ordered the neighbors to take ho d n atilT out of the house. At thai imo his namd was withhold , but as ho las again come to light in the role of a wife boater a brief history of his actions will bo given. Ilia name is N. B. Strong and ho is employed as a brakeman on the 0. & K. V. road by the Union Pacific company , ' "or a long time ho has boon addicted to ho use of intoxicating liquors and when n a drunken condition ho would go homo nd shamefully abuse hla wife and hildroti. Sprcral times laat wintoa ho drove his amily from the house into the storm and hey would doubtlcus have perished with old and exposure but for kind hearted icighbors who took them in and cared for horn. This was not onouqh. On Friday , uly llth , his wife gave birth to a child , it the time Strong was away from home , nd did not return until Saturday night , md in the meantime the child had died , nstoad of going to his homo to comfort , lis wife , ho wont there in a state of In- oxicition and would have boat her then lad not the neighbors interfered. It was t this time that ho used the language in 'cgard ' to the dead child , Monday night ho again boat his family and rove thorn /rom the house. IIo was rrostodand lodged in jail and ypstcr- ay Thomas Pioronot filed a complaint jainst him and ho is now hold for fur- icr examination. An effort will bo made to place him behind the bars for omotimo. S Certain it is that ho has fallen below 10 level of the brute , for a brute will are for and protect its offspring , even in oath , There was a time when ho was a man but alas , that time is past and gone. GENERAlTpBENTISS , Tbo lioys Stand by the Old Hero. To the KJitor ol THE BEE : On July 1st there appeared in TUB IEH an article from this place signed "A jiatonor , " in which the writer Books to irow dirt at General Prontiaa. "Listen- r" said : "I listened to his talk atlen- .voly and to the best of my discommon t iscovorod that his chief aim was to os- ablish the fact that ho fought nobly and leld iho old road until the sun wont own. " Now , Mr. "Listener , " it is not noces- ary for any one to Beak to establish that act , aa it haa lone ; boon recorded in hia- ; cry , and ho would have held the Old load much easier if there had not boone o many in front such as "Listonor"who were opposed to him then , ns now. 'Listener" says General Prontias in his ddress to old soldiers at Tccurasoh for- ; ot to say anything of the boys who itood by him in holding the Old Road , nd were captured and did not fare so roll , and then adds that ho writes thia n behalf of the G. A. R. boya who ore re liable to bo taken in by this fraud. "Listener" would have us believe that 10 is a porfcct philocolathoan , but these f Tecumseh who know him do not overonco bin judgement , dianotion or alor. " It may seem ungrateful to "Listener" lat wo do not appreciate his paternal are , but wo feel quite able to take care f ouraolvoa without hia assistance. The r. A. R. boya of thia post do not fool all ightcd by any oversight of General 'reutm while bore , nnd still expect to old the "old road" until "Listener" ia olegatod to the rank in which ho bo- onga. A.
