temper of the block speculation to-day. It is
reported efforts were made to depress the mar
ket , but there was no lack of supporting or -
ders , nnd after each decline higher prices
ruled , The leading operators were largo buy iG
ers of their various Hpcclnltlea , Other rouses
for the advance in prices were the reduction
in the rates of sterling exchange , statements
by prominent bankers that nn import move
ment of gold would bo witnessed in the early
future , and favorable advices concerning the red
crops. The fact that none of the sensational
rumors current yestnrdny proved true nlso had
much to do with the increased firmness. Tlio
market opened firm ; prices rose i to J per aud
cent , for the general list nnd 2 per cent , for
Northwestern , which sold up to 85 ; shortly 14'i
afterward Western Union wns freely sold nnd
fell off g. Enonnoua blocks of stock were
thrown on the market. There was nn im
pression that the bulk of the transactions No.
were "washes , " The early improvement wns
lost , but the resistance offered by the Western
Union soon turned the market upward. In
tha advance which folfowed , Lackawanna rose

2J , Union Pacific 2J , St. Paul 2 ; remainder of
the list 1 to Ig per cent. About 11 a. m. the ST
failure of Matthew Morgan's Sons was an only
