An attempt was made to enter Olive

Chris Schwcngor'u place was entered
also , but the dog ' 'Sum" who has alroadj
gained the reputation of being ono of tin
most intelligent dogs in the city , ovi

anything. Earlier in the evening Mr ,
Adolph and other friends , who had boor
down to BOO Mr. Schwongor who is quite
ill , on rotunning to Bechtclo's hotel , wort
followed by "Sam , " and a Httlo later one
of Mr. Schwcngor's employes came ur
after the dog , and took him
back to stay at the saloon ono night.
About 2 o'clock "Sam" came up to Boeh-
tolo's and made such a fuss that , knowing
the dog's Intelligence , it was readily un
derstood that the dog wanted aoino ono
to go with him. Ono of the policemen
wont accordingly back with the dog , and
there found that the door had been forced
open by thieves. That dog ought to have
a star and go on the force as a regular.
The residence of T. P. Troynor in
Lewis township a short distance from the
city was entered Friday night , and a
shotgun , a rifle and $00 in money taken.
No clue is obtained yet pointing to the
thlovos.
The residence of llichard Hynos on
North Eighth street was alao among the
places visited. A suit of clothes , a clock
and aoino small articles were taken.

At the meeting of the city council last
night , all present except Alderman Keat
ing , vrho was out of town , and Alderman
James , who was at the other council
chamber on Broadway. Lamp posts
were ordered on 5th avenue , between Gth
and llth streets. Wickham Bros , were

the cast side of Gth street , between
Broadway snd First , at § 4 75 per foot.
The chief of the fire department , with
the concurrence of the fire committee ,
asked that the old engineer , Mr. Wheel

The police committee reported exoner

GEN. BUTJjEH'S VIEWS.

the political situation , General ) " asked a
reporter of Benjamin F. Butler at the
Fifth-avenue hotel yesterday.
"I do not know that they will bo of
interest to anybody , " was the answer ,
"but 1 knovr I should
no reason why conceal -
coal thorn. "
Reporter What do you think of the
nomination of Mr , Blame ?
G on. Butler I gave my views on this
subject the day after his nomination. It
is the strongest nomination that could
have boon made , as it has turned out.
Reporter But there BOOUIB to bo n
great number of bolters.
Gen. Butler More apparent than real.
I can remember when Mr. Webster said
of Taylor's nomination by the Whig
Party , "It's a nomination not fit to bo
made , " which was true ; but the popular
enthusiasm carried him through , and
the bolters were whipped in before elect
ion. In Massachusetts 40,000 Republi
cans loft the party in 1878 and 187 ! ) and
voted independently. But they were
not the so-called independents of to-day.
Their action was a protest against the
rule of the Republican Party , which was
then substancially under tha control of
the men who now bolt Mr. Blaino's
nomination , and James Freeman Clarke
and Charles Francis Adams , and their
coworkers , now having repudiated the
regular nominations of the party , in
most continguncos will return to Mr.
Blaine , certainly rather than vote for
anybody that those men should support
by what party soever nominated.
Reporter But is not Now York the
battle-ground ?
Gen. Butler Yes , and the neighbor
ing states ofw Connecticut and No-Jer
sey. In Now York this curious political
condition arose. In 1882 CO,000 to 75-
000 Republicans voted for the Democrat
ic candidate for Governor , and so many
Republicans staid at homo that ho was
oloctcd by the enormous majority of 192-
DOO ; but with all that majority ho re
ceived only some 850 moro votes than
lid Hancock in 1880. But what was the
Republican vote , either actively voting
3i remaining silent ? It was a protest
igainat its nominee , Mr. Folgor ; by the
[ lopublicans devoted to Mr. Garfield and
Mr. Blaine , and but few of them arc the
iien who bolt Mr. BUino's nomination.
TJiat vote , of course , will now go back to
Blaino. So it would seem to bo unwise
'or the Democracy to count on that vote
For carrying the State of NOW York.
Ehat that vote is not to bo depended
jpon by the Democratic Governor who
was so triumphantly elected is seen by
iho fact that the very next year , when
the Governor caused his friend to be
nominated as Secretary of State , the
loading ollicor on the ticket Mr. May-
lard ho was defeated by some 30,000
rotes , while the rest of the Democratic
ticket was oloctcd , making a change in
jno year ( if anybody could bo so silly as
; o belioyo that the 102,000 majority of
; ho previous year was to bo relied upon
is Democratic votes ) of 225,000 votes.

Gen. Butler Pardon mo. It would
loitlior bo profitable or proper for mo to
nako propheacies. It would neither bu
interesting nor valuable. But , if you do-
ilro , I will state a few facts. The Gov-
srnor felt it his duty as a inattsr of ad-
ninistration to vote the bill which on-

oada That involved a very largoamount
if money to bo taken from the middling
md laboring classes , who principally uio
, hat railroad , every year , as you will see ,
vhon the statistics allow that i > 7,000,000
> ooplo are carried yearly on these roads ,

are instead of five cents each , making a
mm of 81,850,000 yearly. If the vote
lad stopped there , perhaps it might have
ihown that this was necessary to bo done
ilthough it gave an impetus to the anti-
nonopolista which thuy never before had ;
jut the ground on which the
role was baaed was certainly not demo-
jratio , and that was that there was no
xmstitutional power in ono legislature to
regulate and abridge privileges granted
by a former legislature to a public agency ,
liowovor oppruiaiyo those privileges had
become. Again , it haa been unfortunate
for the democracy that the legislature haa
passed a bill with the approval of the gov
ernor taking from the aldermen chosen
by the people the power of rejecting or
Bonfinning the appointment of city ofli-
core , and that confined to the city of
Now York alone , apparently us a punish
ment applied to that city bucauio it gave
democratic majorities , The constitution
of the United States and of every atato
in the union , frumud by our demo
cratic fathers , have placed the control
of the appointment of oillcors In the
hands of a part of the legislative body ,
and the aamo rulp has boon applied BUD-
stantially in all cities The ollicorn of the
cily of Now York have moro important
duties and have larger emoluments than
the oflicors of most states in the union
If our fathers were right , this bill is no
domocraticbut favora the ono man powur

Again , Mr. Blaine is a protectionist ,
and N\W York has becoino the greatest
manufacturing state in the Union , nnd
Connecticut and Now Jersey are in pro
portion equally interested in the tarifl
question. Now , nvorybody knows that
upon that question Gen. Hancock was
beaten in Now York , and everybody also
knows that the establishment of free
trade in this country would benefit Eng
land end hnr dotiondcncies moro than all
other countries in the world. It will bo
very dilHcult to convince a largo class of
our citizens , especially these who are not
at all in love with England or her insti
tutions or her treatment of Ireland , tiat ]
it is best to vote for the candidate of the
democratic party in favor of free trade ,
and thus to play into the hands of our
old enemy , John Bull. Is it not an ad
mitted fact that to carry Now York ia
necessary to the success of the democratic
party ? Can anybody who cannot recon
cile all the differences in the party in
Now York , and who will bo opou to local
antagonisms , carry that state , however
great or high his qualifications may bo ?
Success at the coming election is not
only the duty of the democracy , but an
indisponsiblo necessity ; for failing to
carry the election this year gives four
moro years of power to the republican
parly , and under a bold and daring load
er , of great ability , largo resources , and
agile policy , who has shown moro politi
cal sagacity , nnd who , by his unaided
efforts , has wielded moro political power
than any other man of the present Ron-
oration , the party will so Intrench itself
in the possession of the government
that its hold upon the nation canunt bo
overthrown , in this conoration , at least ;
and , if nt all , it will bo done by some
now party of the people , rising from the
debris of the present political organiza
tions , moro radical , moro progressive ,
and moro devoted to the interests of the
whole people agninnt the aggression of
the few. This will bo the true democra
cy , which will make no entangling allian
ces with the "mamon of unrighteous' '
ness. "
