Stocks The exchange to-day was the scene
of great excitement. Fluctuations wcro fre
quent nnd violent. At the opening the market
was lower nnd prices fell off } to J per cent.
for the general list , and lj | to 0 for Pacific
Mail and Michigan Central. The dcclino was
duo to reports that n leading clothing concern
was in trouble , but this * was subsequently do
med. About 10:15 : It became known that n
largo rmonnt of Lackawanna hod been called
in , The bears ! imnediafoly started to cover ,
wliicli rtculted in a l.irjjo rdvanco , Lacka
wanna and Missouri Pacific were thogro-t fea
tures in speculation , the former rising SJ per
cent to 103 , nnd the latter OJ to 100. Cash
stock was worth J to 1 per cent , more than
regular , and as high as J per cent , was paid
for Lackawanna. The other active shares nlco
commanded a premium for use. The general
Iistrofeolto3 per cent. The advance was
brought nbout by realizations. Missouri Pa
cific fell off to 0-li , Lackawanna to 102J , and
the remainder of the list J to 2 per cent.
When the bnk statement was published a
fresh buying movement sot in and pricei ral
lied J to 1J per cent , outside of Missouri Pa
cific and Lackawanna , which rose 1 § to 5 | per
cont. respectively. Late in the afternoon the
bears started a story that C. P. Huntington
and some of his corporations had failed or
were embarasssd , and money was bid up rap
idly to 1.32 per diem. Simu'taneoualySdrives
weremado against nearly oil the leading stocks
and prices forced down 1 to 4J percent , in tbo
gcnerjl list , and D to C per cent , in Lackawan
na and Missouri Pacific. Central Pacific fell
off -JJ to 3CJ. In the last fifteen minutes
Ihsro was a general recovery of J to 2 percent.
M'chijan ' Central , however , continued weak.
The result of the \vido fluctuat'ons of the day
was to leave the market irregular and changed
as compared with last night , though a major
ity were lower , viz : Caneda Southern 1 , Chicago
cage and Alton 1 , Central Pacific 2J. Erie
preferred 1J , Illinois Central li , Long Island
1J , Michigan Central 2J , Northern Pacific pre
ferred 1 | , St. Paul 1J. The other declines
wcro fractional. The principal advances were
