Yaughan was unanimously chosen as
noble grand arch of the stato. There are
now 48 groves in the state , and a mem
bership ot nearly 2,000 members. There
was no oppoaitlon to Vaughn , and ho
I went to the front with a good deal of en
thusiasm.
W Gates , was arrested twice Thursday
on complaint of his wife , who claimed
that ho was threatening her life , and
raising rows at homo , all of which Gates
denied , Ho claimed that all his wife and
mother-in-law wanted was to got him out
of tlio way while they run off some of his
property , a buggy and other avnilablen.
No ono appeared against htm yesterday
morning and ho was released , ratlmr cor
roborating his statement that they
only wanted him locked up so that they
could do as they pleased.
It is reported that Mr. David Mottaz
has decided to BOOH resign his position ns
custodian of the city jail. It
is to bo hoped that ho will
reconsider this doclsion , and conclude
to remain , for ho certainly performs the
duties well , and it would bo difficult to
secure ono who would do as troll. The
position is not so easy a ouo to fill , Aa
many think Mr. Mottaz is not only
prompt in the performance of his duties ,
but Is cheery and accommodating , hon
est and faithful , ho ought to stay ,

After spending some time heroin looking
for pointers , and interviewing the police ,
ho took the dummy train and wont across

with n very pleasant sort of
a gentleman who seemed very courteous

chatted until pretty well acquainted.
Young Soaton had boon up for two or

well tired out , and soon dropped into n
dozo. When ho awoke , his companion
