X' : ' ' { IHE DEAF AND DUMB , Anneal Closing Exercises of the Iowa Institution , A Largo Glass of Graduates and an Interesting Programme , " Cnrpo IHom , " The nnnual closing exorcises of the Iowa insUtutlon for the deaf and dumb , wcro hold yesterday. The your thus ended has been o very satisfactory and a successful one , and the closing oxcrclaes wore n hnppy finish. For the first lime in ten years a class was graduated , and a very worthy class , too , not only being largo in numbers , bui evidently ruornging high in scholarship and ability. The pur pose of the course is to prepare the students for entering the collcgn for the deaf and dumb , the institute correspond ing to the high school in the public school system. Of those who were graduated yesterday only one was n lady , thu other ton wore young gentlemen , and of these , eight at least expect to enter the college at Washington next fall. The programme presented yesterday was not confined altogether to members ot graduating class , others of the students also taking part. The programme was mainly carried out In the sign language and interpreted to the teachers bv the speaking and hearing visitors. The es says of the graduates wore excellent and both in thought and diction would com pare favorably with those produced at any high school commencement. The programme opened with an essay on "Success of Business" by Charles 11. Ilomstroot , one of the graduating class. Ho named industry , energy , persever ance , prudence and integrity , as among the essential and dwelt somewhat on each. " Knowledge in power ' " is the theme of the next csjay by J. Schuyler Long , another of the class. One could hardly realize that ho was ono of the pupils , R\ ho cave his essay verbally , instead of in the sign language , although ho had lost his hearing entirely four years ago. Ho spoke well , and his thoutjht , though on an old theme , was by no moans old. Three little girls then gave a very In teresting picturing in sign language of the story of Old Mother Hubbard and her poor dog. Frank L. Penry , the next of the class , gave a thoughtful essay on "Patriotism " lie sharply dissected false patriotism wore political ambition , selfish reaching for power , and gave Washington , Lincoln and others as examples of true lovers of the country. "The Past and Present , " was the sub ject of an excellent essay by Xach B. Thompson. Ho drew so mo striking pictures contrasting the idolatry of the past with the religion of the present , the tyranny of the dark ages with the free dom of the now , the progress made in the education of the deaf and dumb , the ad vantages brought by the proas and the improvement iu agricultural machinery. Mark Hewlett , a little colored boy , gave a very laughable pantomime of "Tho Donkey and the Watermelon. " It caused much amusement and was given in so life-like a manner that no verbal interpretation was necessary. Wesley E. Dobson , ono of the gradu ates , gave somu practical thoughts on "Dad Habits. " Ho pointed out many of the difficulties in conquering them , and gave some excellent suggestions as to the help which others should render the struggling victim in his attempts to re gain freedom from those habits. Ho spoke of those who did not easily go into excess , and urged them to beware of setting ting an evil example to those who could not BO easily restrain themselves. Little Miss Olllo Tracy recited in sign language "Mrs. Lofty and I , " it being ono of the best things on the programme. Elmer Edgorton , of the graduating class , gave an essay on "Porsovorauco. Ho believed perseverance to bo bettor than genius , and gave some pleasing il lustrations of the BUCCOSS won by this manly quality. His essay was among thu best of the day. Daniel Tcllior , another of the class , had prepared an essay on "Solj Govern- mont , but was excused from appearing on account of illness. Dwight Motz , a bright boy with an un usual amount of natural mimicry , told in pantomime the atory of the minister and the wasps , which urroused much merri ment. John W. Barrett , son of Senator Bar- rot , and ono the most promising young men in the class , gave an excellent essay on "Tho Light of History. " Ho showed that by a study of history it appeared that great advances had boon made in both religious and political freedom. Winnie Emerson , n young lady , gave a very pleasing recitation , "Good Bye Proud World , " her sign language being very graceful and impressive. Miss Efilo Babb , the only lady gradu ate "Man's True Groat- , gave an essay on - ness. ' Although the world in her childhood became a silent ono to her , yet she has so clung to what little lan guage she had , and so cultivated it , that she read her osaay quite clearly and with such an expression that ono could hardly believe that she could not catch the words which she gave to others , Her essay presented true greatness or a groat- 11083 of character. It remained for Howard MoP. llof- stoator to give the closing oisay and vale dictory. It was on " Youth , and after giving Borne interesting thoughts on that . subject , ho proceeded with the valedic tory address as follows : The tlino has couio to BI nilunto from the In- Btltntiou , and , ul o , to part with our dear nnj kind friondg. Most of these studonU have been associated to gether for nine yearn , and have become much attached to each other and to the institute , it teachers , officers and the fol low students. Prof. Hammond then conferred upon them th'o diplomcs , which they had BO worthily earned , and the exorcises closed with the whole school uniting in the giving of the Lord's prayer in the fli n language. Most of the pupils will leave ( his morning for their homes in various parts of the slate , and most of the teachers will now "awoy" on summer trips and visit * . During the coming year some great improvements will bo made , especially in the building accommodations A largo building is to bo erected near the main building , nnd connected with it by cor ridors. This will bo used for a chapel and for dining rooms. Another building for school purposes proper is to bo put on the site of the present cottage. It is expected also , tint at the close of another year there will bo moio graduate.s to send into the world. Thcso students go forth not only with a knowledge of books , and events , but also with n knowl edge of practical trades and the everyday duties of lifo so that they are capable not only of helping themselves but of helping others.
