Tlio proceedings of the dny , while characterized by great earnestness nml kcou watchfulness to detect nny evidence that the tldo WAS turning in any direction , were not pro lifio in dramatic inculoiitn for the reason tint u largo shuns of the cxmiou wns oc cupit'd in tlio loutino nf calling the to'l of tliu convention , itnd the election of thu temporary clmirnvin. This p.irt of the proceed ! i g wns only relieved from mo- ii'itony hy glimpses of poraonil ch.iractor- isticj nntl plnaui of fouling exhibited by niembuis of the convention ns they rose ono at it time to nnnmitico their poraonnl or politicilprefcroncofortompOMry chair man. The FI118T SENS\TIONU. FEtTIWK of the session WAS immediately after Chairman S.tbin announced the nnmo of IVnyoll Clayton , of Arkansas , as the choice of the nntinnnl committo for tem porary chairman of the convention , when Henry Cibot Lodge , of M tsanchuaotts , roao nud moved to substitute the nnmo of John H Lynch , of Mississippi , ono of the colored delegate from Misaisssippi Though sotno such notion wns not unan ticipated , it caused a decided sensation , It was known hist night thnt there wns n movement on foot looking to the put ting forward of B K Bruce , of Missis sippi , n colored man who wna ono of the vice presidents of the last na tional convention , and who wielded the gavel ns chairman for u short time , nt the request of Senator Hour , who wns permanent chairman ; but it was stated thnt liruco refused the position , the can- dul > 'y lor which wna then transferred to Lynch. A conference on which Lynch was determined ou was hold this morn ing. The FIIIST ( IKNUHAL DKMONSTHATION wna made when , on iho call of the roll , the name of Virginia wns reached nnd thu name of Gen. Mnhono was called. A cenernl cheer WHS raised from the main floor and the galleries. Theodore Roao- velt , the young New Yorker who has so suddenly sprung into prominence in the politics of hia state , also received marked evidences of recognition when ho iirst roao to speak. When the roll call was completed , Powell Clayton was the cen ter of observation , ns ho mounted the chair nt the head of the -Arkansas delega tion and with n degree of duliberntion nnd outward calm which was scnrcoly to bo expected under the circumstnnces , an nounced thnt ho wns not present when his name was called , and that ho desired to cast his vote for his opponent. The announcement of the result of the ballot for temporary chairman waa the signal for A QIIEAT ournuusr. Delegates rose , climbed upon chain , swung hats nnd cheered lustily , nnd when it subsided Governor Clayton , atill with great apparent calmness , moved to make the choice unanimous. About the only other points to prick the foot of observation were when \Vm. G. Donnan , of Iowa , presented 'a voluminous inous memorial from the Natinnol Woman's Christian Temperance union , and was rewarded by the clapping of gloved hands in the gallery , nnd when Leslie W. Rusooll , of New York , pre sented a resolution empowering the com mittee on rerolutions to receive nnd con sider a memorial from the Irish National League of Amnrica upon the question of the proprietorship of lands in the United States by aliens. NIGHT'S DEVELOPMENTS. TUB EDMUNDS MEN. CUICAOO , June 3. The loaders of the Sdmunds movement hold a consultation n the rooms of George Win. Curtis to night , and in the view that they hold the i&lauco of power , they decided to keep ip the fight until either a sufficient num.- ) or of votes came their way to decide the contest in their favor , or else to give hnir strength to some ono of their iking. AN ABTHUK-EDMUND.S COALITION. Some of the Edmunds' men afterwards icld a consultation with the Arthur moplo , and the bond between the two ippoara to ba binding enough to caino hem to join hands as against the Blaine > eoplo. MISUELUANKOUK ACTION. The Wisconsin delegation hold a con- ultation , and the name of General Slior- nan was considered as ono which they night at the proper time spring upon the convontion. The committee on credentials had only considered the Alabama caseup to mid iii > ht , and appeared to bo in for a full- light session. Some of the hopeful dalegatca affected , o-night to believe that balloting for ) resident will bo reached by to-morrow ivening. J. II. HENDERSON FOIl CIIAIUMAN. The committee on organization were in session till a late hour this evening , After electing George B. Williams of [ ndianu chairman , they proceeded to the election of a permanent chairman and secretary of the convontion. The Hon. jdlueha A. Grow , of Pennsylvania , wan mt in nomination by the friends of Blaine , and J. B. Hendersonof Missouri , iy the opposition Henderson was elect ed by a vote of 20 to 17. Charles W. Cisboo , of Michigan , was unaimoualy elected secretary THE I'liATFOKM. Major MoKinloy , chairman of the committee on resolutions , said to-night that it was too early to indicate the points of the platform , but that he in tended to have a reasonable tariff plank inserted in the resolutions , and would probably bo tuocouful. The committee also received and hoard itatementa from a delegation of the Knights of Labor and other kindred or ganisations. They professed to roproioi-t one million workingmen. The principles for which they asked recognition were the enforcements of the eight hour law , the right of labor to organize- the game manner a cspital does , the enforcement of compulsory education , and the pro volition of the importation of contract labor. WAS IT A TEST , THE VOTE OK CIIAIUMAN. After carefully studying the rote on the question of temporary chairman , it does not appear to have boon really t test of strength , as sumo delegates voted with a view to sustaining the action ol the national committee , leaving other questions to be drcided later , while oth ers voted for Lynch with a view to its effect on the colored vo e. UMINE ANH IXJOAN , after the vote , estimated that they hell greater strength in the conven tion than they had before aupp'mud , while the adherents of independent * and dark horaes teemed to foul satisfied with a position which they hold batwoon the main contesting forces. When Powell Clayton was ( elected by the national committee for temporary chairman , some members of the committee - too voted for him on the personal ground that ho had long boon connected with the committee ns a ropresontntlvo from Ar- katuas , nnd without knowing thnt the action involved nny political moaning wlmtoverj otherwise , the contest thnt en sued would have boon avoided in the eo- lection of some other member. Those re-nionaiblo for bringing Clayton forward had not calculated on the convention overruling the notion of the committee , ns tlio precedents were nil for approving Mich nominations. The independents dicidtd to IIAKK AN ISSUE on this selection , nnd form n combina tion with the Arthur men for thnt pur pose. The \otoa were cast largely ou this issue , but not nil of them , tissnino nf the Arthur men voted for Clayton in order to sustain the committee , and some of the Lognn men voted for Lynch , ns ho is claimed to bo for Blnino. _ However , the Edmunds men nro jubilant , nnd claim that the field against Blaine is strong enough to d'ctate the nominee. On the other hand the Blnino men say there nro Arthur men who will go to Blnino if they BOO no chance for their favorite , nnd tint the vote has shown them to bo stronger than has heretofore been conceded ; that in fact there nro IU2 votes in n compact body.
