The mayor lias selected an escort of four policemen to nttond the funeral of the son of Chief Skinner , which takes place this forenoon at 10 o'clock. The council has decided to lot the scales remain at the junction of Main and Pearl streets , but they nro being lowered four inches to conform with the grade. A special mooting of the city council is to bo hold at 11 o'clock this forenoon , the hour being set to accommodate Goo. Mo- Mahon , who has another engagement this evening. Justice seems to have at least ono eye shut sometimes. Yesterday ono follow , for atoaling an overcoat , was sent to the penitentiary for a year nnd a half , and another ono , for attempted rape , was fined $25. A number of shade trees are being cut down. Persons anticipating the slaughter - or of trees nlong the curbing especially , should remember the trees go a long way toward beautifying the city. The Boston Operatic Minstrels ought to return to Boston and stny there , that is if they belong there , which is very doubtful. The show proved n slim one , with but few redeeming features. The case of William Woidnor vs. Wabash - bash railway was decided yesterday in the district court. The plaintiff was al lowed 875 with interest at 0 par cent which will bring the total under $100 , consequently it cannot bo appealed. Ono of the neatest things in the advor Using line , is a little pamphlet being dis tributed by the Rock Island company. It contains excellent portraits of distiu guishnd republican statesmen , and tally shoots for use at the national convention. The California delegation to the national republican convention is expected to arrive hero by special train to-morrow morning , and go out over the 0. & N. W. Arrangements are being made to glvo them a becoming welcome. The train is expected to arrive about nine o'clock. Burglars have boon hovering about Donison. Two attempted to effect an entrance into George Richardson's drug eterc , by breaking the lock on a roar door. The clerk , armed with a revolver , put them to flight. J. P. Connor's reoi- denco was also entered , and $3 secured. Dr. Lscmingor'a houao was visited and a gold watch taken. Rev. J. G. Lorcoa has returned from Detroit , where ho has been attending the annual meetings of three of the moat iraportat national societies of the Baptist church , ono being the Foreign Missionary society , the headquarters of which are in Boston ; the American Publication aociety , the headquarters of which are in Philadelphia ; and the Homo Mistionary society , of New York. Each society bad n day a session in Detroit , there were 700 to 800 delegates were in attendance. The most important decision rendered was to begin missionary work in Africa , nnd expend - pond there this year $50,000. Mr. Le mon , on last Friday , presented the cause of the Homo of the Friendless , of this city , in the interest of which ho attended the meetings. The shoriirfrom Ida'Grovo expected to ship back the mortgaged team nnd wagon last evening , but the property has boon roplovincd by the woman who had boon dceortcd by her husband , having secured legal ndvico. George Holmes has taken hold of the case , nnd it is hoped that ho may suc ceed in protecting nnd helping the woman , nlthough her husband merits no sympathy nt all. When John Johnson , colored , was being ing sentenced in the district court yester day , ono of the court attendants thought lie saw n diamond glisten under the curly liair of the prisoner. Ho informed Jail or Schonlz and when the follow was taken down in the jail to servo his ton days an examination revealed n lonso scale hanging from the negro's scalp , which had , while in the court room , re flected the nun in Huel ; a manner na to deceive the attendant. James E , Bailey , for forging Billy Smith's name to an order for a suit of clothes , was sentenced to three years. Clifford Hough , for larceny , was tivon ; twenty days in jnil and for burglary , two years in the penitentiary. llo is the young man who broke into Swnnson's store nt Creston City. P. Norman for burglary in Minden townnhip was sentenced to eighteen months in the penitentiary. J.
