In n recent isauo of Tin ; BIK : apponrcd a comnninicatioti from one U. 1) . Hnrrott , in which he tries to shoulder this Macrame - ramo Inco buaiticss on to my ahoultlora , and niako believe thi > t I liavo boon swin dling Indies in this city , nnd then try ana hula behind him , 1/ot na ace what kind of n man this K. lS , Bnrrott is , that 1 should try nnd hide my villainy behind. T ahnll give n brief review of the man Barrett , nnd also the facts as they exist in regard to this Mncramu bnslnou , nnd how I cnmo to bo mixed up in it. In the first place , Ihrrett claims to bo n doctor nnd to have practised in this state for 8omo ton years. llut the first authentic account \vo have of him cloiu business , is several years a o , when ho induced n certain gentleman , now in the city , to go into partnership with him nnd start n shirt factory. After running the business some little time , nnd inducing his partner to invest all his money , Mr. Barrett loft very suddenly , but leaving numerous others to mourn his smitten do partnre. Wo next hoar of him in Chica go , engaged in the Mncramo lace business on Twenty-second street , nnd nftor swin dling n hrgo number of ladies , advertises for n partner. His reason for wonting n partner is thn. After having rented rooms suitable for his business , mind vet tisomont appears in one or moro of the papers reading as follows : Wanted : 100 Indies to lonrn light manufacturing and work at your own home. Wages from S1 to § 14 per week. Of course there is n rush for a week or ten days , when aomo of the ladies having finished their instruction discover the fact that no matter how hard they work they can not earn over 40 cents per day , about this time is where the partner comes in handy as Barrett had got the cream of the business and wishes to throw the rcsponsiDility on 301110 one clsos' shoulders which is done in the following manner : The advertisement for a partner ia generally na follow H : Wanted A partner with § 150 or § 200 cash. Business established and paying 500 % . Address E , [ U. B , care of oilieo in which the ad nppoars. And there is always plenty of answers to such an advcriscmunt , and out of n lot he gen erally secures ono. The partnership con tract is drawn up by Barrett and the way lie creeps out of the business is through the following clause which appears in every contract ho _ has made. "Whenever either partner becomes dissatisfied ho shall , by giving the wilier [ 24) ) hours written notice , dissolve said partnership , and Bhall after expiration of said time , divide all goods and money Belonging to said firm , equally between each other. " As will bo readily soon from ihn foregoing ho is able to dissolve and skip out before Ilia partner is aware of .ho scheme that ho has been roped into. The partnership is hardly formed nnd papers signed before the innocent Bar rett gives him notice to dissolvo. IIo will then got all th money ho wants out of his victim , or if ho cannot got him to buy him out will give him the entire business , and then skip out leaving his victim to discover that ho is cleverly swindled and get out of it the best way ho can. IIo could not soil the entire business as that would naturally arouao suspicion that something was wrong , a man wanting to sell a business realizing so much protit on so small a capital. Now , after having shown the manner of operations wo will proceed with Mr. Barrett's doings until ho reached Omaha. In his article ho says ho came from Chicago to Omaha. That is false for fter leaving Chicago ho was brought to light by the DOS Moines papers in which the ladies of that city published a card exposing his swindling operations there , and as a result is compelled to leave. Ho next turns up in Omaha , getting oil' the train and is mot by an 'oflicer with a warrant for his arrest , sworn out by ono of his numerous victims in this city who jot word of his coining. Ho settled the matter , and others Inding out that ho was hero got after ! iim and Barrett naid if they would give dm a chance ho would apttlo with everybody as ho had boon making money and had como to Omaha to stay. Ho secured rooms in Crounue block and ; ho usual advertisement appeared in the Bun. Bun.Now Now cornea another gentleman tin- mown to fame but prominent in the macrama lace business , supposed to ho a narblo cutter by trade. But wo find lim.living hero oil' his mother-in-law since"November , 1883 until April , 188J , : oo lazy to work , too honest to ntcnl , but iblo to sponge enough off his friend * to coop himself soaked with rot gut whisky. Harrat is an undo of this noble youth , but it seems that these two have not spo ken to each other for two years. Pink- ham told mo ho hated Barrett and his vrifn worse than , nnd Barrett said it was jiily for hia ( Pinfcham's ) wife's aako that 10 would do anything for him an ho was u dirty whelp and would rob his best friend. But I think that waa for my special ben efit as will afterwards bo shown. My first acquaintance with Pinkham was four pears ago when I worked with him in the U. P. shops and ho was considered- to bo honest and all right. IIo quit there and I had seen him but two or three times since until I mot him on the street about four years ago. when ho said you are just the man I'm looking for , I've got tired of working hard. I have got a good thing , am working for my uncle , getting $ . ' 50.00 per yroek , but I hate him worse than poison , and if you will put in $100,00 with mo I start into this same basinois my uncle ia working nt , nnd then proceeded to partly explain. But I declined his oflbr. The next two or three days I saw him but ho could not induce mo to go into business. Finally lie came ono day and said ho had a uplon- did nhanco. Ilia uncle was going to aoll out nnd go to Denver for his wife's health , and would give him an opportunity to make something , but ho did not have money enough. If 1 would put 875.00 in with him and both buy him/mt. I finally contented to do this. Pinkham representing to mo that the goods were sold to wholesale houses in Chicago , nnd 100 per cent , was realized on their manu facture. Since they have left I found out that it was n conspiracy to boat mo , and that Pinkham did not put in a cent , Barrett made by hia operation hero 8150 ! ) , 80 scholars at § ' < 00 apiece , and 37.500 he got out of mo. Out of this sum ho had to pay about 4 couts apiece "for teaching , the ladies to whom ho said it would bo no object to teach if he only got the tuition fee can readily see whether hia representations f were true or not. Jew } Mr. Barrett has a very ; > lausiblo story for haviiii ; thcsn contracts nnd diverts their nttont-'on from the main clause , which is/'SH.OO is paid for tuition tee and no other consideration whatever , " by saying that it is to protect the woman is well as himself , nnd keep nny ono from making the work except those ho taught , s they would manufacture the good nnd .nit thorn on sale here , and that would ruin his business ns ho dealt exclusively with the wholesale trade with Marshall Field A : Co , Carson , Pirie t Co. , and jthers in Chicago. The facts are that 10 docs nut sell n single article either wholesale or retailand _ I defy Mr. Bar rett to produce u single bill of Bale for those goods from cither Marshall Field t < ire ! o , Carson , Pirie & Co. , or anyone else , either wholesale or rotnil in Chicago or elsewhere. I had been in the business but a short titno when 1 b.tw that 1 had boon roped into a good-sized fraud , but how was 1 to got out of it ? Barrett states that ho stayed hero two wceka and saw that Sylvester furnished material , otenot _ mentioning Piukham's name in his eagerness to defame inc. Barrett did stay , but not two weeks ; nor did he stay to see what 1 dono. Ho would have atayed longer if ho could. The facts are that him nnd Pinkham wes trying every scheme they know of to throw the whole responsibility on mo. but could not do it as 1 rofmod to buy Pinkham out and would not accept the business as n gift. About this time Barrett had to skip out. The reason for so doing waa to keep him self out of jail , ns his former partner in the shirt business was crowding him for a settlement. Barrett told tins man tlio evening before his sudden exit that ho would scttlo the next morning but not to call at Crounse's block until after ! ) o'clock na ho did not got up very early ; But it scomo ho broke his custom as ho got up parly enough to take the St. Jos eph train nt ! o'clock. The reason for tolling hia man not to call until after 0 o'clock is apparent nt a glance. After Barret's sudden departure 1 made Pinkham n proposition as tlio only lion- or.tblo moans of getting out of the dis honest business in which 1 had boon drawn into. His mother-in-law nnd her daughters understood the business und I proposed to close the rooms In Cronnse's hall , lot nil that were under mstruationa Jiniah at her house , Pinkham and myself to furnish all the necessary material , nnd all that had finished bring their work there , receive their pay nnd nlso moro material if they wanted it. This , Pinkham refuse io do on the ground that his folks wore not to bo trusted. That they would steal his oyoa if they got a chance , nnd so the matter stood. Barrett had been compelled to skip out nnd 1 had Pinkham , his right hand bow er , fast. A couple of dayu after Barrett's hasty flight , Pinkham received a tele gram and said it was from his father who was in Sheldon , Iowa , and not expected to live. lauspicionod that it waa n lie for my benefit , nnd that the telegram was from Barrett , and refused to let him go until the business waa nettled. Pinkham then got ( Joorgo Ditznnbor- gor ( a young man that had learned how to make the work ) nnd said ho wanted to buy us out and would give ? 150 for the business , but did not have the ready money , that his parents wcro well fixed and could got the money in mx- ty days time. I did not care about drawing any ono else into the came net-ape I had got into myself and naked Ditzonborgcr if ho know what ho vras do ing , he said ho did that , ho had not boon around there and learned the busincHs tor nothing HO I consented to soil. Tlio next thing Pinkham does ia Io buy two tickets for St. .Joseph Saturday afternoon and take French leave Sunday morning , I found out after ho had gnno that 1 wan correct about the telegrams , nnd obtained enough proof to show that I hud been only another of the numer ous macrame lace victims nnd wrote to K. D , Barrett telling him that nnlesi he straightened this matter up with mo I would have him arrested , and did not oiler to kcop still for $25. I consulted an attorney who advised mo to not spend nny moro money by having Barrett brought back , but if Barwttuhowcd him self in this state to have him arrcntod. Tlieao nro the factn of the caiio na they actually happened nnd if Mr. Dnrrott has boon ao basely slandered about , it has boon by the ladies that wrote thoeo arti cles , and not by me , If Mr. Barrett iu not guilty of the charges published before and published now , let him como to Oma ha and refute them in person before a proper court. The facts published in this article are every ono of them true and sat forth the true character of the man that will take the last § ; i.OO from a poor woman with ni little compunction an ho would kill a snake , and after swin dling a man try and defame his character. In his article it is noticable that ho nays he sold out to Pinkham it Sylvester , and does not mention Pinkhnin'n name again , but it ia nil what Sylvester done , and Boys if Mr. Sylvester wishes to got himself right , lot him perform his contracts. I have nothing to sot right with any ono but W. A. Pinkham or K , D. Barrett , or my name would have been mentioned by the ladies when they exposed - posed Barrett and Pinkham. Now , Mr. Kditor , 1 am willing , as Mr. Barrett Haid in his article , to give the people the facts nnd lot them tire who should nhouldcr the blame.
