The "stag'1 car of the excursion party
wns n pinnrnmo of merriment , stale jokes

a premium of 25 crnta nn hour , the
obonycd porters having exhausted their
stock on the first call. When the cry
"to berths" was heard there followed n
wild titno. The fortunate few who
doubled up on the lower tier rolled in \ \ ith
little cllbrt , but to mount the upper deck
taxed the combined strength of the con
ductor , brnkomnn nnd portur. The boys
got there with their boota on and rose
with the early birds next morning , to bo
greeted with a cheery "llowdo , " instead
of n curtain locluro. It wns an interesting -
ing study to not'J the careless happiness
of these who had left thuir "bettor

it.

"Well , isn't that too funny for any

tvould pass for a two ring circus. " It was
t few minutes before the close on Sat-

Chicago is truly a dirty and omoky
; ity. There is acarcnly u building in tin-
: ity , no inttter cf what material , that
not discolored by soot. The uncompleted
ted portion nf the court homo , built or
polished stone nnil grnnito , is so black
tlmt it would easily pass for a building
100 years old. Although entirely enclosed -
closed , it is said a cool million will bo
required to finish up the interior and
lirklo the palms of political contr.iotors.
Kighteen hundred lawyers stretch their
hit jo for a living in the finished half of
the building.
The United Stolen custom house is a
sorry looking pile of soot covered stono.
Fortunes woto mad o by the rontrac torn
and political rings in its construction.
Another million and n half is now wanted -
ted to brace up ita crumbling foundation
and rotten columns. It is a Messing
that its walls are BO dark anil dingy ns to
hide from public gaze the cracked nml
crumbling stono. Many assort that
eventually the building will have to be
lorn down.
Pressed brick with terra cotta , brown
slotio or granite trimmings , seem now to
bo the favorite material for a majority of
the best buildings going up. The reason
for this is the fact that brick resists the
i fleets of the soot , retains color longer ,
and is not readily alloctod by climuto
The mammoth nine story Pullman build
ing on Michigan nvonuo is faced with
prnssod brick und terra cotta. Jinny of
iho huge "lints" already built and under
way are largely of this material.
A peculiar green granite hai just been
introduced there. It comes from New
York ami coals ono dollar a foot in the
wall. A largo number of private residen
ces are boinn built of it , and is quite gen
erally used for trimmings.
Chicsgo takes to "r.inito paving ns
freely as Omaha. Rod nnd blue-black
nro the favorite colors. Olark street is
being paved with it. The base Is of
sand nnd broken stono. The spaces be
tnroon the blocks nro filled with lake
gravel and covered with hot pitch , which
makes the paving practically water
tight. The base ts nlso thoroughly rolled
nnd packed bnforo the Mocks are put on.
This kind of pav mont will take the
place of wooden block pavement on all
heavy trallic streets.
"Two years ago I cold my household
goods in Jersey to raise enough to
take mo to Omahn , " said John J. Gould ,
the inventor of the self-feeding attach
ment of nnil machines. "I intended to
work at my trade of nnil making in
Omaha , but when I got there , I induced
the managers to give my feeder a trial.
It was a success , nnd that was the mak-
intcof mp. " To fortify his words Mr.
Gould piloted the writer through his
machine shop onVcst Lake ulrcct ,
hero ho turns out nail feeders complete
except the castings. They sell for § 100
each. Mr. Gould has$15,0M ( ) invested in
machinery , nnd n few weeks ngo bought
a residence on Monroe street for $20 000.
Besides this ho has a residence on West
Randolph street ani intimated fiat his
bank roll , after those investments , would
foot up ? 20,000. All made in less than
two years. Ho is n quiet , unassuming
Yankee genius , warm hearted and gen
erous , and well deserves his success.
"Say , don't you want to buy a gold
ring , " said a ragged , hungry-looking
crook as ho braced up to Pete Sullivan
on Michigan avenue. "I havou'l' had
anything to cot since the war , " continued
crook ; "my mother left mo this ring when
aho died thirteen years ngo. I hate to
part with it , but you can have it for n
dcllur. " "Shove it up for thirteen years
moro , " answered Peto"it ; will polish it. "
"Wellyou're no sucker"and the crook
wheeled to the right in search of greener
lielda nnd gudgeons.
A similar game was tried upon Thos.
Swift and Will Kentbut neither took the
bait. Throocrooks tackled Kent on State
itroot and \rero vigoroutly plying their
, 'amn when Paddy Ryan came out of liis
"asylum , " grasped Kent's paw , and the
; rooks vanished in the nearest alley.
The panorama of the battle of GottyH-
burg is ono of the greatest rights in Chi-
; ago. It is inclosed in a circular brick
building with iron roof. The visitor
ivhon he enters the' buildimj in the center
af panorama , is bewildered by the
light presented. The painting makes an
unbrcken circle of the room. For miles
in every direction the eye wanders over

have received only § 1.000 fur his work.
Tlio first owner expended § 100,000 hi

The treatment of the excursionists by
the representatives of the Chicago. Bur
lington and Quiiicy railroad was generous
to : i lavish degree. The "Q" never
treats its gucsU in a half-way stylo.
Managed by gentlemen of superior busi
