market is ragged , some stocks showing sharp
recovery , and others at the lowest prices for
days. Failures have been stopped for the
moment , but the air is thick with rumors of
further suspensions. Few know precisely
\vhoro they standand the situation is strained.
Noon Money , 4 per cent on good collatora
anh prime mercantile paper about 4@5 c.
Tunas are too unsettled to got correct information
mation , liar silver , $1 11J ; exchange weak
and unchanged. Governments , lower ; states ,
dull ; railways , Jffi5c lower. Stocksweak and
demoralized ; holders are making frantic efforts
to secure cash for stocks ; bulk sales are this
way. Tlio greatest decline of prices U 10 IIFT
cent on Missouri Pacific , which touched 674o
There is slightly better teohnp now , and Mis
souri PaciQu is up to 70c. The Metropolitan
bank was S50D.OOQ debtor to the Clearing
House this morning. Goo. Senoy , president of
the Metropolitan bank , was n partner of Nnl-
son , Robinson & Co. Senoy's sons are also
partners
12:39 : m. Sensational rumors affecting the
solvency of several banks were abroad , but
investigation proved them to bo false , except
in the instance of the Metropolitan. The oil
ox change caught the infectionwas very panicky
and prices dropped 10 points. Secretary I'ol-
ger saystho break is duo to reckless speculation
by a few men. The situation is not inherent
ly weak. He will do everything in his power
to prevent stringency. Ho stated that there
was plenty of money in the country. "I do
not anticipate any extensive panic. Tlio situ
ation is not as weak as people suppose. I shall
do everything in my power to restore confi
dence. " The doors of the stock exchange are
guarded by policemen , the visitors gallery be
ing cleared , No one is now admitted to the
building except the members , clerks and man-
songers , because the crowd endeavoring to
gain admittance is too largo for the capacity of
the cuildlng.
