laving been appointed in 1828 by Sam
uel Southard ; and the third on the list
a the Hon. William Hunter , Second
Vssistant Secretary of State. A clork-

3ureu in " 1829 , and ho has boon promot
ed from time to timo. Ho reached his

ion's administration , and Mr. Marr is the
fourth on the list. There are a number
of clerks in the departments who have
seen forty , and some have seen forty-five

The oldest Postmaster is Roswell
Boardsloy of North Lansing , Tonkins
county , N. Y. , whoso mission boars the
date of Juno 28,1828. Postmaster Stab-
or of Sandy Springs , Md. , was appoint
ed a few months before Boardsley , but ho
died a year ngo. John Bowdish of Itural
Grove , Montgomery County , N. Y.- was
appointed Postmaster on December 10 ,
L830 , and now occupies the samp office
, n which ho opened his first moil more
: han fifty-three years ago. During this
; imo he has received the princely salary
of § 03 a year ; and admistrations have
come and gone , political parties have ris
en and died , of decay , but he has1 never
failed to draw his quarterly allowance

A surprising case is that of George Hil
ton , who was appointed postmaster at
South Parsonfiold , York County , Me. ,
on the 27th of December. 1830. His sal
ary was § 35 a year during this time , but
at the end of the fifty-second year of his
service he resigned the office with all the
its lionors and emoluments , and asked as
a special favor that Alphous H. Hilton ,
bis son , a youth of sixty-four summers ,
might be appointed in his stead.
Uncle Jimmy Marr is oithodox in his
religious holier , and was once discussing
theology with Colonel Ingersoll. The lat
ter told him he "couldn't see how hell
could have any terrors for a man who

for fifty-three years. "
