It was none the less true. Few of Mr. Dillon's friends are nwnro of the early struggles and the severe deprivations - privations through which ho passed to at tain his present financial eminence. IIo now ranks with the money kings of the country. Ho is president of the gigan tic Union Pacific and its connecting rail roads , and a powerful director in the Pa cific Mail Steamship company , * tbo St. Louts nnd Wabash , Missouri , Kansas & Texas , Texas & Pacific , Delaware , Lsckawanna & Western , Metropolitan and Manhattan Elevated organizations , the Mercantile Trust Company , and the Westdrn Union Telegraph , in addjtion to being one of the executive committee of about a score of other financial organ isations. Mr. Dillon was born sovonty-ono years ago in a small village in the northern part of this state. His parents , who belonged to the poorer class of Irish peasantry , emigrated to this country many years pre vious to his birth. His father was a nmall farmer who had more than enough to do "to make both ends moot , " and out of his scanty earnings ho found it no easy task to give his children the advantage of oven a country school education. Recognizing the almost destitute condi tion of his parent's finances , young Dil lon at the immature ago of seven deter mined that ho would bo n burden to his progenitors no longer ; as ho has since ex pressed it ; "I wanted to strike out for myself. " Leaving the paternal roof ho sought out and obtained work on an Eastern railroad then being built on the Mohawk and llndson road between Albany and Schenectady ( this road is now known as the Now York Central ) . Railroad Gazette , Some experiments have been made lately upon the Bound Brook route to ascertain the difference in [ the consump tion of coal between an express train running on schedule time and the same train run at a very low rate of speed , but otherwise under the same condition , the same five cars and precisely similar on- gincs being used. The train ran in each case from Philadelphia to Bound Brook and back , a distance of 110 miles. Tlio slow trip was made in i ) hours and 23 minutes. 4,420 pounds of coal being consumed. The train stopped at the same places as the regular express train * , the "only unusual feature of the trip being the fu neral pace , averaging a little over 121 miles an hour. Whonirunuing on schedule ulo time the consumption 0,710 pounds , agreeing closely with the usua consumption on this route with the rcgu lar five-car express trains. The saving effected in coal by running the train at ivory very slow pace was 2,305 pounds. The percentage of saving may bo expressed in two ways : as compared with the conaun.p tion at the normal express speed , the slow speed shows a saving of 34 2 nor cent , while the consumption at the high speed shows an increase ever that at the low speed of 53.1 per cent. Those figures she v that high speed is not so expensive as is generally imagined. The snood of 12.5 miles an hour for a through passenger train making few stops is , of course impracticable , for vari ous reasons.
