Iluglien mid Henry 'i'liugos , li.ivu just returned from n hunting trip which they inadti the Intlur part of last wcuk to the Pine UlulFi null country ndjicuiit thproto , in which they worn very aucci'ss * ful , haying bagged ouo hutidrud ivnd tidy Bovon ducks , three groy wolves , and what 13 anil butter , two mountain Hone , ono a moiutor and the ether n ainull cub. The ducks vrcro bagged in thu vicinity of the station nnd along tlio ntrc.iin which wornls its way along bosidu the low bolt of lulls that ho nunr tlio station. On Sunday afternoon , however , the pnrly , who were all we'll nrmud , pushed south of the na tion a few milui into the hills for the pur pose of trying their luck with ainiiothing nf moru importance in tlio way of game They were well rewarded f r the coin- nutndnblu effort which they inado f"r this purpose , and before they hud gene two miles from the station had succeeded in bringing down three largo grey wolves. Smnowlmt clutud by the sue cess which had thus far rewarded them , they pushed on still further couth , across a level scope of country which was wall ed in on the south by another nnd larger range of hills. Thcao hills wore of Unit kind BO commonly found in this part of the far west , and in many insUiicva termed ' 'chalk blufla. " Into these hill * which nro rcploto with ravines and email wiuding canyons , the party nmdo their way , hardly knowing or thinking of what ihoy might fii.d. Tlioy finally came to a cuuous ravine or canyon which they con cluded to explore for a short distance and then it was agieud that they should re trace their steps toward the station in case they did not discover anything upon which they could try their muikmatmhip. Just at the entrance of this raviuo or canyon upon the left of their trail stood quite an elevation , which might prouerly bo called a butto. They had just passed this and were following the ravine which wound its way to the lult and partly to the roar of the butte , when a dog which liad followed them from the station , and which had lingered behind them , gave a sudden yelp and rushed past the hunters in on excited condition. They halted and turned back for a short dis tance , but could sea nothing , when sud denly they were startled almost out of their boots by a sound which they de scribe as half way between a scream and a roar , and before they could recover from their surprise tire mountain lions , ono of them a monstrous ono , in ado their nppoaranco from behind a small rocky formation on the side of the hill , They did not at first feel disposed to at tack the party , but without stopping to consider the gravity of the situation , Huahes , of the pirty , fired somewhit wildly , but his shot took effect , and in stantly killed the smaller lin. At this the monster survivor of the two nmdo di- directly for the party. Kapp at once tir ed , slightly wounding the animal in the right fore leg. Tanges alao fired , but bv this time the animal was right among them. Fortunately his shot entered vital part of the animal ( the right luo but they had no time to hro again or to HUB their gunn to any advantage. Two of the party , Kapp and Peters , had largo KUivea with thuiu. , Tneso were roaortec co , but in the meantime the lion hac closed in on Petora , who , in endeavorin to protect himself , stumbled and at the sumo time lost his knifo. At this mo ment the monster caught Pe tora' foot in his mouth. ' But the others of the party had not been idle during this time , for they know that the lifo ot their companion depended on them. Hughes clubbed his gun and began to deal out aomo tremendous bio rs on the animal's head , while Tanges , who had picked up the knife dropped by Peters , together with Kapp , closed in on the lion with their knives , and succeeded not only in saving the lifo of the piostrate Peters , but before ho had received serious injuries. The animal waa dispatched , having received three or four mortal wounds from the knives in the hands < f Kapp and Tanges. Al together it WAS ono of the most remarkable contests bo twcon man and this much dreaded ani mal that has taken place in this nortioii > f the tar west for inAny y-ars , und had it not been for the remarkable nocvo and courage of.tho member * of the party , one at least and probably moro of the party would have met their diuth in this conflict with this "terror of the foot hills. Pe ters , whose iujuriea were not diuigcrniiM with difficulty nmdo his wny bwk to tin- station , after which the remainder of the party returned with a wagon and brought in the two dead nnimaln. The party re mained at the IJlulla until Tuesday , when they returned to Ohejnnno , having in th" meantime prepared the skins of the liens and sent them to Chicago to ho e tuff-a and mounted. ' What the "f United ' people " the Sta'cs , nnd especially the business men of thin city , have loog hoped for and have us often been disappointed in obtaining , scorns in a fair wny of being nt Iixat re- lir.ed , " said a well known merchant to t > Dial hand th's ' morning , "I refer to the Postal Telegraph com pany , which is making gigantic strides on IB old and laggard rival , thn Western Union , nnd is now furnishing thu people of this and moat other largo cities with tv system of telegraphic ) communication nt u reasonable rate , nnd v. Inch performs thb service in n moat rapid nnd nccurnlo manner. From personal observation I can say thnt the business man of New York City are delighted with the prompt nnd reliable system of this company , and Believe that the Western Union haa nt nst found a rival which can neither bo crushed out nor consolidated. Due go nround to their general office ind see for yourself.t The principal down town office of this company is nt No. 49 Broadway. Thu BCOUU presented waa a bustling and nctivo one , and gave evidence of the exertions which are being made to open up now offices as fast ns practicable. Hugo boxes of zincs , bundles of wire nnd immense packages of stationery were being made ready for shipment in the supply depart ment on the ground floor. The company occupy the whole of the largo building , and every corner gave it indication that business was rushing. In a conversation with Mr. Bosonor , ono f the directors of the Postalregard ing the prospects of the company and the general outlook of the tolcguaphic busi ness , that gentleman said : x "Our wires are being taxed to their full capacity , and wo are daily opening new offices. Our rates to all parts of of the country where wo have oflices now open are twenty-five cents for twenty words. whii > h is much cheaper than by any ether line , nnd in our case cheapness does not imply bungling work nor vex atious delays. Wo have the fine quality of wires nnd instruments. Our compound copper wire , which wo use on all our lines , is the most expansive that is man ufactured. Our wire is equal to nix of the common wires used by the Western Union and is cheaper in the end , as nothing short of a cyclone can break it. It is composed of steel wire one-eighth of an inch in thickness inclosed within a copper wire of a q mrtor of an inch di ameter. The insulating of this line ren ders it possible to work easily from New York to Chicago without repeaters , whereas Western Union is compelled to use three nets of repeatera on a similar circuit. "I would like to call attention to ono thing which is now in operation is this city und will prove a boon to thousands of people. Our rote for twenty words to any part of the city is only fifteen cents' . Instead of ono sending a message from , say Wall street to Sixty-fourth street , by a district messenger , nnd being compelled to pay perhaps seventy-five cents or a dol- Ur for the same , he can have it performed by our company for fifteen cents. You know a man can dictate quite n letter in twenty words. "Our principal up-town office will bo in the Uoft'man house , -which will be made the cuntro cf distribution for thu immense district in that and adjoining localities will bo instan'ly ' despatched to the distributing office in the Hoffman , thui saving the long messenger journey up Broadway , by which menus the other comiiHuiea now deliver their business. If our offer is accepted , it will render cheap telegraphy a certainty , for ten years ut nny rate , and how any congressman c.ui go buck to hm constituents and try tn justify his course in voting againxt this great boon is more than 1 can understand. " Nr. P. W. Gushing , the well known electrician , who exhibited many tele gmphio appliances at thn Paris > xposi. ttoii in 1880 and at the Viminn Kloetri- . cal com-russ in 1B82 , is now cnnntccod ; with the postal com puny. . "For the last thrto raontha I liavcj bocn engaged in laying our wires under ground in Washington , D , 0. The expense nt tlio start is somewhat grantor , but the immu nity from accidents , such ns being broknn bv fires nnd storms , is entirely obviated , Wo shall lay our wires underground ni soon ns practicable in the largo cities whether the law compels us to do so or not. " In the operating department the clif ffront systems in use were explained by Mr dulling. The workings of the Gray harmonic system , on which six messages are Bout nnd the saino number received at the SAIIIO tirno , woio nhown. "This , " si5d Mr. Gushing , "is far su perior to the Edison quadruples systoin , which is still in mo by thn Western Union. Eighty words per minute nro sent by this plan , whereas the _ utmost oipability of the quadiuplox is forty words " The Liggo automntio system vraj next examined und an exhibition of ita work- gt niven. A brass cylinder , eighteen inches i long nnd ton inches in diameter , is connected with n wire to 0'iic.tgo , Eight 1 hundred words wore printed on this cylinder in the Morse nhjhabot by moans of an insulating ink , which , when the cylinder is revolved , allows n small steel pen to slip between the ink und the I unmarked braes , thus forming n circuit and causing the matter t" bo re 1 produced in Chicago on n chemically pre 1I I pared tnpo exactly ns it loft Now York. The cylinder it worked by a small steam enginn , which counts it to ruvolvo upon n shaft. The eight hundred words wore transmitted nnd an answer received from Chicago that they were "O K. " in exact ly one minuto. "The Whrjatstono system , which is pir- ' illy in use in the Western Union , " said Mr. Ciuhinit , "is only capable , when working ut its best , of transmitting " 00 -orda per minuto. The Western Union people have been trying for over n year to gut it working satisfactorily , but so far with little success. It is generally re garded in electrical circles ns being a white elephant on their hands. It does very well in England , where work is dona much slower , but the climatic conditions of this country nro not favorable for its aucccssful working. The IllulrlloiulH Sold. Dubuque Spcciul to the Globo-Domocrnt. It is now officiary announced that , as stated unauthoritntively some time ago , the Chicago Je Northwestern railway has purchased all of the Blair railroad inter ests in Northwestern Iowa , viz : The Iowa Falls & Sioux City , the Sioux City & Pacific , the Mnplo Valley , the Tro- mont , Elkhorn & Missouri Valley , and , in fact , nil the Blair properties , posses sion to bo given July 1. The sale docs not include lota nnd lands. By the terms of the purchase the Northwestern issues a little over $14 000,000 of stock in exchange for the stock of the com panies which arc bought out , and as sumes the bonded debt of those compa nies. Now that thu Blair interest has boon sold , necessity for the pro posed now line between Dubuque nnd Freeport , nnd passing through Galena , does not seem to exist. Officers of thu Illinois Central were seen this morning in regard to the sale , and credited the state ment that Blair had sold his Iowa lines , including the line from Iowa Falls to Sioux City , now leased by the Illinois Central. If the Central renews its lease at its expiration throe years hence , ns it haa the privilege of doing , the present railroad advantages of Dubuque will not bo impaired , and ( ho Chicago and North western may build into Dubuque after all. But , if the Central surrenders its loose , the Chicago nnd Northwestern ! will carry through Clinton the greater portion of the eaut-bound freight which comes to Dubuque , which by an net of congress is made the western terminus of the Illinois Central , and it is probable that that com pany will cither renew its lease of its Iowa division , west of Iowa Falls , or build a line into Minnesota from Du buquo. "Do you know , " said an insurance ogout yesterday , "that accident insur ance companies will not insure a piofoss- ional base-ball player , although they ac cept risks on powder maker * ? Ic seems strange , doesn't it , " ho continued , "that ball playing nhould bo considered moro hazardous than powder-making ? The in surance people figure this way : While ac knowledging the dangerous employment of men in powder factories , it is presum ed that the men thcinsehound their cm- ployura take every precaution to prevent accidents , and thus , by attending strict ly to their business , they escape all in jury.
