Stocks-Opened generally a small fraction
higher for the majority of active docks ; until
about 12 o'clock the market was dull nnd
drooped , gradually boeoming wonkor under
Mio hammering of room traders. Shortly a/ ,
tor 12:30 : the boors attacked Union Pacific ,
and started the report that owing to decreased
earnings it would pass the next dividend.
This report was emphatically denied by Union
Pacific officials , but before the denial became
known the raid had gathered strength nnd the
prlco of Union Pacific was doprosod 2J per
cent , to GiJ. By 2 o'clock other stocks were
also raided o a limited extent and the decline
became general , though not so great on other
locks. Canada Pacific was exceptionally
weak , and declined 3J per cent , to 48 , closing
at 49 , In the lost hour the decline continued ,
and prices fell steadily until the close , which
was generally at the lowest prices of the day.
All the active stocks on the list with the ex

Union Pacific , which was the loading feature ,
was traded in to the extent of over 120,000
