Stocks Tha firmer tonoof tlio stock market
this forenoon confirmed the belief of yester
day , that U was time fur a reaction from the
extreme depression of last week. The im
provement iu coal shares IB noticeable as the
cfToct of yesterday' * agreement to restrict the
output of coal by the suspension of running
nlno days In May , and If necessary nlno days
in Juno. The reduction in the rates of ster
ling exchange and the probable decrease , if
not the entire cessation of exports of gold
next week , also liid n favorable effect on the
market , The decline in stocks was accom
panied by a report of the Illness of 1) . O.
Mills , who Is n largo holder in Krlo securities.
The market closed strong , nnd fur n majority
of active stocks for a majority of tlio day.
The result of the day's trading showed n firmer -
or market. Twenty-seven stocks out of forty
traded in during the day closed higher than
lost night. The most important advances
were Omalia preferred 2Jc , nnd common Ijja ,
j\ In consequence of Increased earnings. Union
Daclfic was firmer , inIow of tbo prospective
settlement of the d ill ! cullies with the Bur
lington & Qulncy. General Manager Clark ,
of the Union Pacific company , who leaves for
Chicago to-morrow evening , says : " 1 do not
oipcct the Union Pacific nnd Chicago , Bur
lington & Qntncy compauio ? will como to nn im-
medlato settlement of the present difficulties.
At the meeting Tuesday matters will bo talked
over nud nn adjournment will probably betaken
taken , but efforts were made during the week
to finally sotUo the question at isauo. "
