parties , this being assault with intent to
commit rape , it growing out of the same
transaction. Ho gave bonds for his ap

Patsoy Morriaoy , on Omaha lad , who
came over hero Saturday , and was on a
little spree , did not appear in police court
yesterday morning , and his $10 forfeit
money wont to the city's till. It appeared
that Patsoy seeing a man going along
with a basket of moat on his shoulder ,
pushed the basket off ia the mud just
for fun. It proved to bo a § 10 joko.
Servant gtrls are scarce , and good ones
still more scarce. It is claimed that the
Danish girls of the city , of whom there
are a goodly number , have organized a
league , and struck , the wages claimed by
them being 83.50 per week as the lowest
and $4.00 for these capable of doincgou
oral housework. These who employ girli
in their homes are wild about it , but they
seem helpless.
A howl is raised because ono of the
women of the town wont to church Sun
day night. So long as she behaved her
self properly there seems little occasion
for any auch howl. The churches nro
supposed at least to bo for the saving of
sinners , though many of them have
wandered away from that idea. Moodoy ,
the great evangelist , invites such fallen

the righteous , but the sinners to repent

ilan proposed by JJir. Brown ia to lay
omporary tracks on any street so as to

,0110 by shovels and wagons. The re
peat of Mr. Brown haa boon so far no-
uicsccd in by the council as to have an
udinanco prepared granting him the
necessary permit. An this ordinance

A. Moore , another well-known contractor ,
laa asked for similar right , and his
naino has been joined with that of Mr.
3rown in the proposed ordinance. _ It is
loclarod by aomo that the scheme is im-
> racticablo , and that if tlio right was
granted it would never bo used. Others
irpdict that the ordinance will on its
iccond reading bo referred to a commit
oo and quietly pocketed never to bo
icard from again.
Tlio workingmen do notproposo to take
any chances , however , and they are
nuch stirred up about the prospect of
.ho teams being kept idle , while the dirt
s hauled by railway , and a meeting has
) cen called for this evening at the court
louse to discuss this and other questions
of interest to the men of muscle.
The filling in of streets and lots has
iclpcd out many n teamster and workingmen -
men during the winter , in which little
or no work could bo done , haa made all
realize how much the workingmen have
seen dependant upon the street -work ,
and this makes them all the more wrathy
at any intimation , that the work is to betaken
taken away , and given to steam.
There are other features of the street
work which ought to bo considered and
liscussed. The letting of work to con
tractors haa boon attended with many
perplexities and hardships to the work-
.ngraon. The city council has by its
, o6so way of doing business made it un-
: ertain whether property owners are liable -
blo for the payment of the filling or
whether the city is. This uncertainty as
bo when and how payment will bo made
lias caused contractors to fix the prices a
from 30 to GO per cent above what they
would do the same work for on a cash
basis. AB a result , these who have means
tn spare enter into private agreements
with contractors , by which they got the
filling in front of their property done a
a much lower price than the contrao
cilia for , and paying cash they hold the
certificates of assessments against their
own property. If in the future
the courts should decide that the prop
erty is not liable , but that the city mus
pay for the work out of the general fund
then these wealthy property-owners wil
present these certificates to the city am
draw payment for full contract price
making a handsome profit. The poor
man with his little homo cannot so easilj
discount the certificate of assessment , ant
hence ia at a disadvantage , for if the
property is liable , ho will bo compollec
to pay full contract prico. Those who
can pay cash f r filling have got their
work done cheap enough , but those who
cannot have to pay a largo margin. In
ease these amounts finally have to bo
paid out of the general fund , the poor
man's homo will bo taxed to pay for the
profit which accrues to these who have
"shaved" these certificates of assess
mont.

While contracts have been let at fwcn
ty-fivo to thirty-five cents a load , the
teamsters have been getting about fifteen
cents a load , so that they got little out oi
the improvements , in comparison to whal

the certificates of assessments.

wait on the city council , so arranging its

who do the work some assurance of get

obliged to take orders on stores , and

they could have used the cash to bettor
advantage. Others have been defraudoc
entirely out of their wages.

recognition is necessary sixty days before
the state tournament in order that the
company may bo admitted to contest for
the prizes. The company is virtually
running team , and expects to carry of
a number of the prizes at the tournamon
at Dos Moinoa June 8.

chosen chairman and W , R Brown sec-
