Tha making of matrimonial matches
has long bcou ouito a business among
JOWB of a certain clau in thia city. There
nro among thorn n largo number wLn live
comfortably off the proceeds of their labor
as matchmakers , unit there nro othcra
who only occasionally act as mediators in
such transactions lor profit of course.
Ono of the latter class had n lawyer ar
raigned last week for failing to recover n
fee no per agreement. With a view of
ascertaining the extent of the practice of
matchmaking among the Jens by paid
intermediators , n reporter for The Mail
and Express visited the Jewish suction of
Ilio city of which the coiner of Ludlow
and Grand streets is the centra. In his
ramblings ho chanced to nicotn cultured
Kusslan Jew , who has travelled consider
ably and is by virtue of this and his
superior talents looked up to by his coreligionists -
religionists in the section referred to , yet
ho is by no means tin orthodox Jow.
' 'Oh , yet , " ho said , in answer to the re
porters inquiry , "that businois is pretty
extensively carried on in this city , and in
fnct all ever the world , among Polish and
Russian Jews ; nnd the Gorman Jews are
also piano to it. It is on oriental prac
tice and ilourishcn boit in Russia , Ro-
umania and other places that do not enjoy -
joy the bunoflla of civilized life. In the
Orient young couples do not enjoy thu
free intercourse that they have in this
country. There foiv marriages are con
tracted among Jews without the instru
mentality of the Shodchon , as the inter
mediator is called in the Ilobrciw vernac
ular , and there are many who thrive at
the profession and travel from pno coun
try to another in the pursuit of their
calling , much as commercial drummers
do. Their rocomponno depends generally
upon the liberality of the contracting par
ties , but quite frequently they bargain for
and receive from the groom a percentage
of the bride's dowry. Sometimes the com
mission la ever ton per cent.
8IIOD3HEH IN TUB C1TV.
"Thoro are ft number of Shodchon in
; hi city , canoclolly in this locality.
Every young Jew who starts in business
> r appears capable of supporting a vrifo is
ooked upon by the intermediators as
ogititnato prey , and no matter how dotor-
mitod ho may at first appear to bo a
wcholor , their blandishments and argu-
nonts soon convert him to their views.
Hioy are a cunning sot , and among
hem ivomon as well os mon. By clover
diplomacy they often succeed in getting
their man to promise thorn $1,000 for a
desirable vrifo , and leave the mercenary
groom to discover after marriage that his
wife has cost him more than nor dowry
amounts to by hundreds of dollars. "
"Do rabbis over act as go-betweens in
matrimonial matters ? "
"Very frequently , yet not so often as
s generally supposed. In Franco , however -
over , matrimonial affairs nro nearly always
arranged through rabbis. I know of in
stances where one of them has received
25,000 or 50,000 francs as a foe. I recall
ono case in particular. The rabbi found
an acceptable husband for a daughter of
n Russian general in the person of a Gor
man Hubrow Baron. The bride's dowry
was about 20,000,000 franca. The pnno-
rnl is worth something like 200,000,000
francs , and at ono tune donated 1,000,000
roubles to the Russian schools. The
barou is regarded among the Jews
of Etiropo as fully us benevolent as
the Rothschilds. Ilia most noteworthy
act of charity was the presentation
( if 1,000,000 francs to the Alliance-Isra-
elite.
