a Gorman by birth and has resided in
this county about twelve years , the most
of which time ho has been living at Fair-

removed to the place where ho , yesterday
morning , took his life. "While in the old
cpuntry ho was a brewer and a man of
considerable property and was not ac \
customed to labor for his daily bread.
During the Franco-Prusuian war ho loat
his property and came to this country
a wanderer in strange land.

THE RAILROAD
An Effort tq 'no Made to Shorten the
Time 15 Hours Between Omaha
and San Francisco ,
BtamhtrQ Time to lie Adopted.
At the meeting of the division superin
tendents of the U. P. railway company
hold in the U. P. headquarters building
ycatorday afternoon nothing of import
ance was done. An adjournment was
taken until this afternoon. This moot
ing has two objects in view.
THE FIIlflT OBJECT
is to arrange n time card. It seems very
probable from the statements of those
officials that standard time will bo
adopted by the Union Pacific road.
All Bother roads now running
into Omaha and Council Bluffs
nro using this timo. Should the U. P.
adopt it the city ultimately will bo forced
to bring it into requisition. When this
is thn case the hands of time will bo
turned forward twenty-four minutes and
the liven of Omaha's citizens lengthened
by so much. '
" " THE SECOND .OBJECT
is to shorten the time as much as possi
ble between Omaha nnd San Francisco.
This is to bo brought about not so
much by shortening the running
time as by making proper connooctioas
between the Union Pacific and the Cen
tral Pacific at Ogdon. An effort will also
bo made to induce the Central Pacific to
make immediate connection at Oeden
with the train which leaves hero at 7:50 :
p. m. If this is done a delay of ten hours
will bo avoided. More than this an at
tempt will bo made to shorten the time
five hours between Omaha and Ogdon.
If this all Is accomplished the distance
between Omaha and San .Francisco will
bo shortened fifteen hours by way of thosa
two roads.
Should the last object bo attained the
result will bo a fatal blow to passenger
travel over thu Denver & Rio Grande for
San Francisco. The Central Pacific train
will then leave for the Gate City two
hours before the arrival of the ono over
the Denver & Rio Grande in Ogdcn. It
is tha policy of the Union Pacific to make
this change and force the Central Pacific
to act accordingly.

Nobody could surmise the manner in
which the money could have boon
stolon. All that could bo ascor-
taincd was that it was gone. The
mystery was as unfathomable OB that
surrounding the historical personage of
the Man of the Iron Mask. Every at
tempt was made to conceal the crime. It
was hoped that silence would give a clue
to the guilty parties. Nothing was gained
by this. The tireless efforts of the Chicago
detectives to find a thread in this
labaryuth of darkness were unavailing.
At length the crime was made known to
the world. Several auepcctcd parties
were arrested. Nothing of guilt could beE
E ist roved against them. On Wednesday
WILLIAM A. MNKEBTON
and two other members of his association
arrived in Omaha. It is rumored that
others came at the same time , but this
statement could not bo verified. Pinker *
ton waa very communicative. His eager
ness to state Ilia business was almost suf
ficient to arouse suspicion. Ho was on
his way , ho said , to Kansas City. On
tlio evening of the day of his arrival ho
bought a ticket for St. Louis. While
hero Pinkerton spent most of his time in

Various conjectures have boon msdo as
to the business of thoao men in this city.
Some said they were in pursuit of Tom

James Nugent in the Theatre Comiquo a
month or BO ago. Others said they were
investigating the circumstances attend
ing the

last fall. Another theory is that they
are hero to throw off suspicion. That
while the Omaha papers are announcing
their arrivals in this city they will sud
denly swoop down upon their unsuspect
ing victim m other quartoraVmd load him
back into the toils of the law.
From a detective of this city it waa
learned last evening that these men were
here in hot pursuit of a man who , it is
thought by them , was implicated in the
safe robbery in Chicago. Conclusive
proof , it is claimed , can bo furnished that
ho planned and in part 'executed the
robbery which relieved the railroad com
pany of this largo amount of money.
Prom a reliable source they were in
formed that
THEIR JIAN WAS IN OMAHA.
When they arrived here they wore
surprised and chagrined to learn that
their bird had flown. That
fear which takes possession of
the guilty had caused him
to seek safety in flight. When this was
learned there waa ,
NOTHING FOR PINKERTON TO DO
but follow his victim. Hence hia short
stay in this city. The others are hero
yet. Other business , the nature of
which could not bo learned , occupied
their attention yesterday. It is reported
they leave for Chicago to-day.

AN IMPOETANT QUESTION ,
Arc Tnvcs Assessed Upon 1'orsonnl
Property a Lien Upon It ?
Suit was instituted in the district court
yesterday by John Edwards ngainot
County Treasurer John Rush. This case ,
although it involves no largo amount of
money or property , contains in it a legal
principal of great importance. Two yearn
ago toxos were assessed against Frankie
Hall of this county , amounting to § 10 ,
on all her personal property. These
taxes have never boon paid. Since their
assessment this personal proper
ty was sold under a mortgage
to the above named plaintiff.
Yesterday a treasurer's execution waa is
sued against this property. Possession
was taken of it by the officer. A re-
ploviti suit was inatituted , as before
B tat 3d , and the property taken from the
treasurer on the writ.
The principle involved in this case is
whether or not taxes assessed against
personal property is a lien upon goods
against which it is so assessed. Mr.
Rush , advised by Mr. Cowin , the county
attorney , in the prcmiseaholda that it is.
This legal point has never been settled
by the supreme court of this state.
Mr. Rush says , if his opinion is not
correct , a preat wrong is continually
committed against the taxpayers. A
largo amount of taxoa will then go un-
collectcd. Either through the careless
ness and negligence of the aaaessois , or
the dishonesty of the owners of chattel
mortgages , money so invested is never
assessed. "Thoro are hundreds of thou
sand of dollars in chattel mortgages that
are nevr assessed , " said he. "Within
two blockif this office I can find men
who own $50,000 in chattel mortgages ,
upon which not b dollar of tax is paid. "
This suit undoubtedly will go to the
court of last rosoit , where the matter
will bo set at rest.
