A rumor was started tonight that James MoHonry the railroad magnate , was arrested to day onboard the steamship Sorvia , on which bo was a passenger for England. The * llogod arrest is said to bo nt the inattnco of the Erie railroad. A promi nent official of that road said that Me- Henry was arrested bv the Unilod Slates marshal on board the Sorvia when about to sail ; that the arrest was made on an execution obtained on a judg ment issued by the Unilcd States courts hero for over § 2,000,000 ; that the judgment was obtained over four yoats ago. HcHonry , since his last arrival in this country , has boon trying to nogotialo a settlement through third parties with President Jowott of the Erie Road. No agreement could bo reached. Jowott loaraed that McHonry was about to sail for England without satisfying the judgment ; so ho instruct ed his attorney to take out an execution and place it iu the United States mar shal's hands. Negotiations for settle ment were continued as late as last Tuesday , but still no conclusion arrived at. Two hours before the Sorvia sailed the marshal and Jowott's lawyers went aboard , when the former served a warrant on McHonry. Jowett wn immediately communicated with , and shortly after terms of settlement were agreed upon. McHonry turned over to Jowott 11,000 shares of stock of the Cleveland , Columbus , Cincinnati & In dianapolis railroad , valued at § 681,000 , and 13,000 shares of tlio Chicago & At lantic extension bonds , valued nt § 1,800- 000. McHcnry also gave a written promise to pay the balance af the judge ment in ono or two years. The matter being settled to Jowott's satisfaction , Iho execution was withdrawn nnd MoHonry allowed to sail. James lllley , McHenry'a agent , sajs McHonry was not arrested ; thatoflicers were aboard the steamer , ho has no doubt , but that a peaceful settlement wns negotiated by him for McHenry prior to the l&tter's go ing aboard the Servja.
