AN UNNATURAL MOTHER.
A Woman Dcserls Her Twin Babies
Only Three Weeks Old ,
Tlio Police After Her.
About n month ngo a woman giving
her ntitno na Nora J. Smith arrived in
this cify nnd rented rooms of John , the
Ohinnmnn , on Notth Mum street. About
a week nfter her arrival she gave birth to
twins , both girls , and hecuring the ncr-
vices of n woman ID take care of her ,
has been living there oinco. A short
time ago she placed one of the babes in
the care of a nurse on Upper Broadway ,
nnd on Thursday last she made eoino sus
picious moves as if about to skip out of
town. The police were informed and
they watched the woman so closely that
she could not got aw.-xy very well , but
yesterday morning she disappeared. The
oflicors learned that a woman of her
description loft on the Hock Island train ,
and it was supposed that aha had started
back for DCS Moinoa. Mayor Vaughan
at noon telegraphed to Stunrt to head
her off , nnd have the woman arrested
on the arrival of the train at that placo.
The wires were down and the message
could not be sent until about II o'clock ,
an hour after the train had passed Stuart.
By some ntrango picco of stupidity on the
part of the employes at tlio telegraph
oflicotho fatal delay was not made known
to the mayor , and it was not until late in
the afternoon , when making the inquiry
for an nnswcr , that ho learned the facts.
Ho then telegraphed to Dos Moines ,
but as the message would not
reach there until after the arrival of the
train , ho had little hope of catching the
woman.
It is useless to try to use words to ox-
the indignation felt at so cruel n
Srcss of two little babes , who are
thus loft by their own mother among
strangers and without friends or caro. It
is to bo hoped that she will bo brought to
the front in some way. During her stay
hero she is said to have received money
from some ono in Den Moines to pay the
necessary expenses , and it is surmised
that the mala partner who ought to share
the responsibility is in the capital city ,
and she has perhaps joined him there.
She is described as a woman about 25
years of ago , light complexion , blue
eyes , brown hair , short in stature , largo
noad , rather homely , sunk between the
eyes , and some false tooth , n blue
worsted dress and drab dolilman ,
trimmed with brown , a black hat vrith
no trimmings , a brown veil.

HOT AFTER HUFFMAN ,
Him.
A young man named J. Huffman , was
arrested yesterday on a nerious charge.
It is charged that of late ho has been letting
ting his passion run away -with him , and
that ho has been causing much commo
tion in the neighborhood whore ho lives.
Among the instances cited against him , is
that ho recently entered a neighbor's
house and assaulted the woman , throw
her down on the floor , and hold her , and
that it was only by the greatest exer
tion that she freed herself , and giving
him ft push landed him against a window
smashing it , whereupon ho skipped
away.
Another window-smashing has taken
the form of a criminal charge against
him. It is alleged by a 'neighbor ' , John
Morgnl , that Huffman broka in several
lights of glass in the window of his house
in attempt to got inside and assault his
young .daughter. County Attorney Myn-
stor filed an informing charging him with
burglary , and on this ho was brought before -
fore Justice Vaughan and gave bond to
appear for examination at 10 o'clock this
morning.
Huffman denies the chal'ga made in
every particular , and claims that it is a
conspiracy to rob him of his good name
and make him trouble.
