CHOICE CATTLE , be * Alicrftccn Anns and Gallowajs Now ou Exhiliition Here. Xlii'lr History ami I'cuullnr lnlnt > < . The herd ot Abordoan Angus and Gal- oway cnttlo which arrived hero the other .ay are attracting much attention , and ho sale , advertised in another column o take place nest Thursday , will doubt- osa draw many buyers and ozcito much ntercst. Innsmuch as tow hero are acquainted with the breeds , n short history will irovo interesting. In giving this his * ory , however , wo shall confine ourselves o the Galloway , as there is so little dif- oronco in the two broods that in most hinga n history of ono will apply to ioth. ioth. This This hardy and impressive brood of 'oiled cattle took its name from the > rovinco of Galloway , which is now con- mod to the two southwestern counties of Scotland , but which in _ ancient times jempriscd the six counties which lie to vest of a line drawn from Glasgow to .ho Carlisle on the English border. The .11110 race of ( .attic have boon kept from into immemorial in Cumberland , the no.st northwesterly county of England. The origin of the Galloways is lost in ho mist of antiquity. While suggos- ions have boon made as to the com posite character of other varieties of live lock for which the province at distant loriods gained celebrity , an allegation ias never been made In any well-in- ormod quarters that the Galloway is not an original and distinct brood of cattle. There are two circumstances connected vlth the improvement of the Galloway > recd of cattle deserving a special notice. Clio ono is that systematic and very suc cessful efforts wore made to improve , hoin at a very early period probably earlier than the improvement of any other variety of British cattle. Imme diately after the union of England and Scotland the graziers and farmers in Norfolk and the other southeastern counties of England became exten sive purchasers of thcso Scotch Polled cattle. This active demand at ; oed prices induced the brooders of Gal- oways to do their utmost to produce ox- iellcnt boasts , and all authorities write n testifying to the success of their of- 'orts. The cattle are spirited , strong , very healthy and hardy , and no cattle whatever feed bettor or yield beef that .3 moro relished at table , as can bo well attested in all parts of south Britain. In all essential properties , none will deny that the Galloways possess a very high degree of merit , are equalled by few and excelled perhaps by nono. They fatten readily at a very early and a very ad vanced age. But what above all may bo regarded as decisive of the merits of the Galloway breed is the uniform testimony of the Norfolk graziers , who have lone given thorn the preference over every other breed of cattlo. Their average price is 2 per head above that of any other breed of the same weight. In the London market , where all the breeds of the island como in competition , they arc generally allowed a decided preference. The circumstance connected with the improvement of the breed deserving oi special notice is that this improvement on the Galloways was not effected in the smallest degree by crossing with any other breed. In regard to this it will be sufficient to quote Alton , who says : "This superior breed has not boon improved by crossing with bulls from other quarters , but has boon brought to its present im proved state bj the unremitting atten tion of the inhabitants in brooding from the best and handsomest of both sexes , and by feeding and management. It is mainly a beef-producing breoc that the Galloways have made a name for themselves. The quality of theii beef is very similar to that produced bj the West Highland and Polled Aberdeen Angus breeds , and is exceptionally good Indeed the beef of these varieties ranki as "prime Scots" in Smithfield and othoi loading British fat markets , where it solli higher than that of the other breeds Its superiority ari SB from the fact tha it is well marked , the fat being well inter mixed with the lean. In respect of proportion of dead t ( live weight , Galloways killed unusuall ; well. Butchers , who purchase the bcs class of Galloways , state that they cs ttmato them to dress about 00 per cent of their live weights which , wo need no say , is above the average of other breeds Exceptionally good animals yield oven i higher percentage. . In point of fact Galloways arrive a maturity at different ages , according t < the way they are kept when young. Ai a breed they have never been pain pored anywhere , but in the lowlandi they have boon brought moro rapidly t < maturity than in the uplands , where tin climate is cold , the fare scanty , and little or no artificial food is given. They are not only now , but have boon from timp immemorial , polled or hornless , Some writers mention a tradition to the effect that in remote ages they were pro vided \Yith horns , but it is merely a tra. dition , for in the earliest notices of tliii breed , centuries ajjo , there is no allusion made to their having auch appendages. Galloways are able to endure Imrdshif arising from exposure to the element * during the severest weather -in winter , The temperature in thn lower parts of their native province is occasionally very warm in Bummer , and they stand that extreme equally. They are still grazed pretty extensively in some of the warmest counties in England , and no breed there suffers loss inconvenience from the heat or makes moro progress than they do. rronchmon can iiroporly bo called "tin blights of the table. During the firemen's tournament in Council Bluffs several years ago , a contract - tract was made by the firemen of the city with Reed to play a week's engage ment at Bloom & Nixon's hall. Complaints That a Broker Named Eflgar Has Been Dnpiug His Customers , ( Us Sudden There lately came here a young man named Edgar , who opened a ticket- tirokor's otlico and begun rather a lively business , as ho ollorod rates bettor than wore pi vonby the regular brokers. During the last few days several parties iiavo returned to this city and made complaints about the manner in which they were used. As many know , the custom of brokers is to sell rebate tickets that is , if a man wants to go to Kansas City , they sell him n ticket for a much Further distance , and give him an order on a Kansas City broker for a certain amount , so that on arriving there the cus tomer gets the cash named in the order tor that part of the ticket not used. Some of these who have thus bought tickets of Edgar , complain that the orders for rebate were not honored , and that they had to take loss than what the orders called for. Some letters have ilso been received from brokers on whom lie has drawn , inquiring about him. Some of the complaining parties who Tool that they had boon thus duped by these rebate ardors , vroro here Saturday and hunted diligently for Edgar , but could not find him , and it was reported that ho had skipped. It is said that ho lias occupied in times past spmo promi nent railway position , and is a bright young follow nnd well up u railway matters , but has rather a poor reputation as to straight deal. Those vrho buy tickets should patron- i/.o brokers who are known to have some financial standing and responsibility , and not take chances on these who simply got desk room somewhere and open up business as strangers , and who offer so much greater bargains than these who are in the business year after year. The man Edgar has not boon at his office since Friday morning , and the other occupants have hoard nothing of him. So it seems that ho has gene for good. It is estimated that ho secured between $200 and $300 of money on promised rebates.
