Something of a joke was perpetrated upon our worthy chief of police and ono of his detectives , Mr. Edgar , at Borghan- son's saloon on upper Broadway , late Saturday night. It seems Mr. Edgar happened into the saloon in his rounds as n detective , and while there a tall , mysterious noting man , weiring a heavy overcoat , entered and occupied his time in looking around the plfiCo and pacing the floor. Detective Edgar , who is a natural born detective , and who should bo on the Pinkerton force , thought ho scented a rodent of some considerable magnitude , and proceeded to keep a "weather eyo" upon the mysterious visitor. The man Doomed tlSI somewhat uneasy , and was noticed to frequently thrust his hands into the side' pockets of his big coat as ho walked leisurely across the floor. Ho finally loft the place , and with the instincts of a true detective. Edgar followed him , believing - lioving that ho had got on a racket of some magnitude , and ho didn't propose to loose this chance of allowing his abil ity. While shadowing the peculiar prowler , Edgar mot Chief of Police Skinner , who was returning homo after a hard day's work in examining the muz zles of the canine tribe of the city. Ho gave the chief a pointer or two , and both followed the stranger , n blockwhen the latter returned to the saloon. In the meantime the fdrco was reinforced by n special policeman , and all.throo ontorpd the saloon. Upon a signal from Chief Skinner , Detective Edgar walked up to the supposed crook , and laying his hand his shoulder said "I " upon , want you. "Oh , I guess not,1' coolly 're marked the perambulator with the big overcoat. "Well , I guess wo do want you , " said the gallant now chief , stepping boldly and bravely forward , and confronting the man. "Well I guess you don't , " said 'the suspicious appearing man , at the same time drawing - ing two self-cocking revolvers from his side pockets , and pointing them in the di rection of the now police forco. The chief took ono hasty look at the holder of the arsonol and a glance down the barrels of the guns and then made for the door , while Edgar got behind a cus- pidoroandtho regular policemangoc under ono of the tables. "Hold on a second , " remarked the man with the Colt instru ments in his hands , as Skinner was about to skin out the door , "I want you fol lows. " Before the chief could got away the supposed sleek fellow had him cor nered with n revolver , while ho directed the point of the other toward the cuspi- doro and ono particular table , under which the form of the regular was vis ible. All these were successfully cor ralled , when the man with the gun said : "It seems you don't know mo. I am a deputy U. S. marshal from Kansas City , end am hero looking for a government offender. But as I haven't found him yet , I will discloso-a fact or two to you follows. It is this : "Council Bluffs has about the sleekest and most ily police force of any city in the United States. , Your city is noted for several things , but the police force is about " ' the j most noted'of all. When I comb again I will telephone you , " and the deputy marshal put up his instruments of war , and was about to walk out when Chief Skinner and Edgar , who were gcadually regaining their nat ural color , asked him what ho would take , and all four surrounded the bar , while the chief called for B cigars , suddenly remembering the now orders of the mayor. The oars of the chief were suddenly penetrated by the bark of a dog , and ho excused himself to BOO whether the brute were a regulation muzzle or not , while Edgar said ho thought another confidence man had arrived at the donpt and the regular wont out to resume his beat. The otlicor from Kansas City then thurat his hands into those mysterious aido-pockots and started for the Ogdon. That Special Piano. NEW YOUK , March , 25,1884. Mr. J.
