NO MATCH FOR THE JAP , Wrestler Daly Laid on His Back , Enslly Tliroxvii In Two Houls.tho Irish Athlrto Kttleoly ' "InlniH Koiil , ntul Koluscs to ( Jo On , Now York Taiirnal , March 2) ) . Cnptnin Jrmies 0. Daly , the Irish clminpion , presented a splendid physique when ho appeared on the platform in Clarendon hull this cxoninp ; to wreatlu with Mntsailn frirakichi , the Juimueso vroudor. Uftly stood 0 foot - inches , and gax o his weight aa i--'O ' pounds. 11 u wore bright green tights. His akin htul n healthy and transparent glow , which showed the working of the muscles mid every movement of his body. Sarakichi was also stripped to the waist , and ho ap peared all muscle. Ilia broad face wore n smile of confuloncu. Ho stood 5 feet 0 inches and weighed ISu pounds. A brother .lap stepped from Iho crowd of fiOO in the hall to net na interpreter , and Steve O'Donuoll was his umpiru and handler. William Barry attended to Cup- tain Daly. "Pop" Wliittakor was mna- tor of ceicmonica and rcfcreo. It wns understood that the men xxero to wrestle two bouts , lirst in Japanese style , then tivo bouts in catch-aa-catch ran style. If neither gained three falls they were to teas for choice of style of final > otit. Captain Daly proposed that they oss for choice ot atylo for the first ) out. This wng acceded to and ho won , "catch-as-catch-cnn. ' choosing - - - Hcforo the word "tnno" had ceased to roll through the hall the men were in a ierco grapple. The Jap's sight woo the | iiicker , mid his motion was the nimbler of the two. lie bent the captain like a willow sapling. There was u gliding und 1 stamping over the canvas mattress. I'lio captain clutchodhis opponent's nook , inns and back in ijuick successive ! grips , n order to gain a , hold and brace , so that : io could trip the Jap. Sorakichi twist ed from c.icli hold as fast as it was made , and , stooping down , gripped D.xly's left leg in his arms , rained him oil' his feet , unl throw him to the floor Then hugging him with the grasp of a devil fish ho pressed Daly's shoulders to the canvns. This really constituted a fall according to the rules , but the Jap and n great nninbor of Daly's friends did not apparently ao understand it. Sora- kechi kept pushing Daly over to Iho edge of the mattress , while fierce cries of "fall" and "foul" filled the air. The Jap finally pushed Daly's head over the edge of the platform. Still , the captain kept his hips I'rom touching the floor , and then the cries merged into the ono word , "Foul1' Pop Wliittakor shouted "A fall" into the Jnp'fl cars , and the in terpreter also called , "You've gained the fall. " Ho still retained his terrible grip. Police Captain McCullough now sprang on the stage mid pulled the Jap from oil' his adversary. Then rose a stonn of ap plause , mingled with cries of "Foul" : uid hisses. "Poi/1 Whittaker mounted a chair and drowned all other noises by shouting : "This is bona tide honorable a , up-and-up , able match. 1 am the referee , and I will decide justly if it takes my other arm. Matsada Sorakichi wins the fall. Both shoulders down constitutes a fall. " From the time the men grappled until Captain Daly's shoulders touched was Hu'J sec onds. The next bout was Japanese style. Any part of the body a linger ovnn pressed to the canvas would bo a fall. The Jnp oprang at Daly and caught him by the shoulders , endeavoring to press his body forward , and thus bond Daly to the floor. Daly pushed the Jap against the wall at the back of the staio ; and took the Jap by the nook T/ith an ugly , twisting clutch. Sorakichi squirmed loose , got a hold on Daly , forced him to ward the right side of the stage , throw ing him with a whirl. Daly's shoulder struck , und a continuance of the motion brought the Jap's hip to the flooi , with Daly turning on him To many of those in Iho crowd , which was made up mainly of Daly's partisans H looked us though the captain hai gained the fall The strugala hud onlj lasted sixteen seconds. Wild outcries again filled the hall , and when Pop Whittaker motioned that Sorakichi hat won the fall the uproar was bewildering Daly and Barry both claimed thv- fall p.mt Daly refused to wrestle again unloia the claim was allowed. When quiet was paitially restored Pop Whittaker an nounced that time would bo called ngaii in seven minutes for a bout at catch-as catch-can. If Captain Daly refused to wrestle the match would bo given tf Matsada .Sonikichi. At the close of the seven minutes born kichi placed himself in position , ant Daly arose from his chair and wulkec toward him with reluctant steps. Before ho had reached the contcr of the plat form Barry stopped in front of hia prin cipal and pressed him back. Daly re mained standing. A henchman of the captain's , just behind him , shouted ' 'We want a now reforreo for Mr. Daly ' "I have boon chosen referee , " roiircii "Pop , " "and 1 pronounce Matsada Snr- akichi the winner. " This settled the matter , and the crow1 slowly dispersed. Critical athletes present expressed their bplief that , with proper training , Sera kichi will prove more than a match for our wrestler * at all stylus. Stale Convention. A political stito convention was hold by the colored people of Nebraska inLincoIn yesterday. Woundorstand the object of the convention was to map out a courao to bo pursued by the coloroc people in the approaching national elec tion , and to elect delegates to represent Nebraska in a national convention to beheld hold in Richmond , Virginia , aomo time previous to the holding of the republican convention in Chicago. This is one of a series of conventions being held by the colored people all over the United States for the same purpose. From what can bo learned the colored people are all alarmcc by the late decision of the United .States supreme court in the civil rights cases , transferring those rights from the fedora ! to the state courts. They regard the recent - cent disgraceful outraged in Danville , Virginia , and Copiah county , La. , as only a Bamplo of what the future will bo , il something is notdono to chock the demo cratic carnival in the South. Wo under stand from some of the leading knowing rines , that the Richmond convention , the Fittahur" ; conference , and ameoting of the national cxecuth a committee created by the national convention held in Louisville villo last fall to bo hold in Chicago on the L'd of Juno , just preceding the mooting , of the republican contention in that city , ia to demand an absolute assurance by that convention of the protection of the colored and white republicans in the south , and the nomination of a candidate for the preaidency whose antecedents and > ast political work will justify them iu ho hope that the strong arm of the ROV- Tinnont will bo used to maintain the najesty and authority of law in the whole government , and the protection of ill citizens in their life and property. The delegation from hero to the state convention ia a strong ono , and good vork is looked for , and wo hope a dolo- ; ation to the national gatherings will bo sleeted that will reflect credit to the in- olligonco of the colored people , and bo iblo helpers in the great work before hem.
