A Very Eiciiiug Mile Race and an In- tcresling Game of Polo , Wlllicrntl nnil llio Wliltcs AVInncrs Saturday ovcning nt Uio roller skating ink there was ono of the most exciting ttractions that have taken place since ho opening. It wan a race , twenty-two lines around the rink , supposed to bo a lilo. The starters were Messrs. With- rail , Stevenson , Naion and Fisher. In rawing for positions Fisher secured the nsido , with Stevenson second , Withorall hird and Nason outside. Fisher took ho lead at the start , followed by With- rail , Stevenson and reason. Stevenson oil on the second lap and withdrew. ? ho contest at this point began to be cry exciting , the audience applauding oudly at every spurt. Withorall passed ' 'ishor on the lifth lap , and gained the oad by nnohalf lap. Nason helped inn- orially in pushing Fisher to the front in rying to pass him on the twelfth lap , nd ho succeeded on the thirteenth , oing threo-quartora of a lap bo- ind Withorall. Fisher slipped hortly afterward and withdrew , iving Withorall and Nason a clear tracker or the contest. Nason , amid loud chccr- ng and applause , gradually decreased the lie distance between himself and Woth- rail , but on the twenty-first lap hin imba refused to carry him farther and ho ell all in a pile. Wilhorall slowed up nd completed his twenty-second lap in our minutes and twenty seconds , win ing the prize , a commutation ticket of wonty admissions. Then came the first exhibition practice amo of polo between the two Bluffs lubs. The club composed of the older ) oys made n very fine aDpoaranco with heir new uniforms , consisting of white Unnel shirts , laced with red cord , and ark pants. Thuro was a tedious delay in starting ho game , cauoud by a delicacy on tht iart of -whito-shirted boys in appear- ng in their now uniforms. The xudicnce , noticing this , took great do- ight in applauding vociferously , is each ono separately appcarnd , canning ho hue of the faces to rival the chord with which their shirtn were laced. Game 'ns I'm ally called , and after considerable llort on the paitof the Whites they suc ceeded in gaininc the goal. Harry Ward , of the yotingor club , los- ng his skates twice , retired , but did not Glum before the Whites gained the ; oal.Tho The break for the goal was very excit- ng. Three fouls vrcro claimed , two oi which wera allowed. The Whites won ho second goal also , which gave them ho firot gamu thuy have won during thcii iracticu , the boys heretofore winning iverything. Mr Covall , of the boys' ' lub , did not play , ho being out of town. The clubs consist of sovenplaycrscach , ind as the rules state , each club has one ; oal tend , two half-backs , ono cover- mint , ono point and two rushers , by ehich they arc designated. The game consists ot placing a ball half vay between the two goals which arc situated at either end of the hall they are six feet long and nine inches high. Vt a signal by the referee a rusher from inch side goes for the ball and the play- ng then becomes general until the ball is driven under a goal , which counts one 'or the successful aide. In case a foul is claimed the rofcrco places the ball in the center again and play is renewed , pro- iding ho allows the claim ; if not , play continues at the point at which the ball vas when the foul wus claimed.
