FIRST APPEARANCE OF SPRING , The Winte Thrown Onen ana" ilic Oyercoals Lain Away , Hats and Honnots Put In nn Appearance to tlio Antinynnco of Envious Fcnmlcs. Sunday WAS the first genuine spring day of the season and its appearance was hailed with joy by the citizens of Omaha , 'ho day dawned bright , clear and warm , and before 10 o'clock the windows wore hrown wide open and the gentleman of ho liouso might bo soon meandering own town minus his overcoat , while the good housewife cast aside her heavy cloak nd attended church in genuine spring ostumo. The fmo weather had an excellent of- oct upon the morals of the city and every hurch within its borders was well at- ended , not nlono in the morning , but ilcowiso in the evening. Upon entering ho church a sort , of laziness Boomed to .ako possession of ono and ho would drop ito the nearest seat and scarcely move uring the entire service , and when the ast song was sung and the last prayer md been said , most of the congregations voro so comfortably located that they voro almost loth to leave. SriUNO HATS AND BONNETS. Ono of the surest indications of pring is the appearance of spring ats and bonnets. A few of loao were noticeable in the churches yes- orday. In speaking of spring hats , it might bo well to describe the spring liapcs and the prevailing style of trim- ning. The spring styles are all very ligh in the crown , a sort of two story oncorn , with a rolling brim , ono side riled a triilo more closely than the other , 'ho ' color is principally brown , in all indos. The trimming will bo principally ewers , and they are bunched together nd fastened directly in front , leaving 10 side and back of the hat nearly bare , 'ho latest rage in the line of flowers is 10 clover blossoms. Thosearoau entirely low ornament , never having been used n trimming before this season. The tansy blassom must now give way to its nero lowly competitor , the clover blos- om. The price of spring hats will range 11 the way from $1 up to , well just as ligh as your pocket book trill possibly land a trifle higher. Easter Sunday is the ny designated for the appearance of Ting hate , but some people will insist i coming out just a little bit ahead of voybody else. MAIUILi : I'LAYINO. Another sure and unfailing evidence of pring is to see the small boy , with his > ockets full of marbles , playing "miba" 'or keeps. Yesterday , upon nearly every ornor , whore the sun had sufliciently riod the earth to permit of the sport , night bo scon from four to fifty boys , all lusily engaged in playing marbles. Not- rithstanding the fact that it was the > abbath day , the little follows- stuck losely to the text from early morning until the sombre shades of night closed i upon the city , and then they went to heir homo and spent the evening in ounting up their winnings or losings , as lie case might bo. RIDERS AND WALKERS. Yesterday was a harvest for the livery men of the city. Everybody who had a onveyance of their own improved it yes- erdaywhile those who were not so for- untvto as to bo the possessors of a con veyance , and yet were fortunate enough o bo supplied with the wherewith to irocuro one , did BO and rode up and [ own the streets of the city to their icart's content , Many , however , were not able to enjoy ho luxury of a ride , but a great and good } rovidonco has made it possible for oven .ho most humble of His human creatures o breathe and enjoy the same pure.fresh air that is aliotod to the most wealthy and exalted on earth , consequently thou- auds of Omaha's citizens , both mule and omalo , meandered up and down the treots and enjoyed the balmy air and warm sun. The atmosphere of yesterday morninq did not make people feel so spring like , and.tho overcoat took the place of the dus , or again. Saratoga Notes. The school term ends on Wednesday next , whenan examination will take placo. The roll at present contains the names ol eighty-seven scholars. Mr. P. M. Bailey has resigned hio po sition as principal of the school. The noncommisioncd ofliccra at Forl Omaha will give a ball on Monday evening ing , the 17th inst. Mrs , M. E. Hairs has just rcturnoi from the oast. The residents of Saratoga will bo glac bo hear that Mr. Kyle has recovered fiom Ilia recent sickness. HAliATOdA UTUKAHY AND DEUATIKO BO OIETV. The literary entertainment given by the above society on Saturday evening was a good ono. Duet by Mrs. Meanoy md Miss Honsman was loudly applauded , [ leading by Miss Lomax , and recitation jy Miss E. Meanoy were equally wol * received. The program wo was in its entirety tiroty satisfactorily carried out. The debate which followed was : resolved : "That the Indian has received more lmn.1 treatment at the hands of the white people ple than the negro" , Mr. G. R. Butlin md Mr. Stoney on the affirmative ; Mr. U. K. Hensman and Mr. M. I'1 , miloy 311 the negative. Alter the subject hat soon discussed on both sides the judges rendered their decision in favor of the atlirmativo. The subject for debate at the next meeting is ; resolved : "That the bill for extending national aid to oducationshould bo adopted. " Much annoyance is caused by the wretched condition of that part of Sher man avenue immediately opposite the main entrance to the Driving park. A little rain or snow quickly converts it into a veritable slough and it remains in that undesirable state no inconsiderable portion tion of the year. Those using the roiu for vehicular trafllo are much inconvenienced encod whereby , while to pedestrians it is almost impassable. It is hoped stop , will soon bo taken to remedy the evil. O. B. B. A Serious Case , A New York dude was suddenly taken violently ill and a physician was hastily summoned. After looking at his tongue and foolin of his pulse , the usual formula , the doc tor remarked ; "Ilu has evidently been overload in s hb atomach. My dour sir , " ho continued , rousing the patient , "can you toll mo what you ate for dinner ? " "Nothing , doctah , bnt n glasi of watfih and part of a toothpick , "replied the sick dude , wearily. "ll'm , " mused the physician , "that is strango. His faintness certainly comes from a disordered btomnch. " Then ho suddenly said : "llring mo his cano. " The cano was brought him , and after a careful examination ho laid it aside , with the remark : "It is oa 1 thought. A ten-cent cano , mil ho has sucked the varnish on" the icad.
