There waa some work put onto th fi street crossings' yesterday to keep th s" ' mud off , and it was appreciated by fee 'tin- l-psEoongors. The condition of "Presbyterian" alloy as it is called , is simply terrible , and th > city authorities should not wait any longo > but clean it up. A slight scare was caused at the stoat "laundry on Lower Broadway by tipping over , but the incipient blaze was 1 quickly squelched. 'To-morrow-evening a crowd of merr clatters ora-expected over from Omaha to return the visit lately made them b the rollers of this city. The graad ballto ; bo given by the An- dent Order of Hibernians at Bloom & NixoB'i hall on the 17th , promises much enjoyment , and will draw a crowd. A number .are also expected from Omaha , Dunlap .and other places. Among the interesting bills now pending there is ono authorising * ozuty boards to appropriate not to ox- ooo'l § 5,000 a year for the improvement of creokn and atreama running through cities. The bill has pasted the uonato and will probably pans the houao. If this county can help improve the creek hero , which has to servo as drainage for n laigo extent of country , it will doubtless bo nc coptablo by the city property owners , upon whom the damage by'iioods falls heavily. WINDOW SIIADEH at coat I at BEAKD'B Wall Paper Store. THE FIEE CHIEFTAIN , AinljItlouH Aspirants Looking Cor the I'osltlon. With the change in the city government mont roaulting from the recent election there are , aa usual , a crowd of aspiranti for every position in which there is sup posed to bo any likelihood of a change. It is conceded that the police force will bo changed nearly throughout , but it has not until within within a day or two boon thought that there tran any possibility of a change in the chiefahip of the lire de partment. It aoemo , however , that some think differently , mid are striving to got into that position. 'ChioM'emploton has shown himself an excellent chief , and the department has worked harmoniously and enthusiastically with him , and done very efficient norvico. No com plaint is hoard , and none is urgot as a reason for a change , the only reason seeming to bo that some one pise wants to get there. Under the oidinanco the chief ia chosen by the council , and it ia reported that aspirants have been work ing Ahlormon in the hope of getting the place. Whatever , claims others may have for the position , or fancy that they maj have , two stubborn facts remain , which will cause asplrauts'to ' work in vain.NOno ia that the present chief ia conceded t < bo an excellent man for the place , line giving general satisfaction. The other is section 2 , of the ordinance regarding tin lire'department ' whicli says : "Tho chiol engineer shall hold his oflico until re moved for cause , such removal to bo ef fected injtho manner provided by law for the removal of appointodjoity ollicors. ' The fact that some ono else wants the. oflico , may seem "ouflloiout causa" to the minds of those who doom all positions as mere political plunder , but it will hardly satisfy the public.
