About noon ycslurdny the horrible ( Ha

that itviw a case of infanticide , nnd this
was atrungthonod by the f.ict that a ser

sick in her bed. Coroner Council took
the body of the infant in chmgo , and a
jury was impanollcd consisting of J. NV.

Drv Lacy also aided in the investigation ,
and from the tacts , as far as they could
bo learned , it appeared that the girl , who
is rather a woman , benig apparently
Uventy-livo years of ago , came hero from
Mills county about a month ago ,

refused to give his natno , but remarked
that it would go hard with him if she uvi r
came across him. As to the body of the
infant , she disclaimed all criminal intent
or purpose , and that it was an unavoida

; lmt in his opinion the child was born
dead , and the jury rendered a verdict ac
cordingly , and probably no criminal pros
ecution will follow.

To the Kilitor of THE BKK :
On Monday occurs the annual school
election in our city , and knowing THE
BUM'S disposition to fairness and impar
tiality in such matters , I feel assured that
it will give a fair statement of facts in re-
g.vrd to the present iasuo. It has boon
intimated that Professor Clarendon has
"still another Richmond in the field" this
year , in the shape of a ticket which , if
iiiccessful , will work to the end of rein
itiating him. Now , if this is true , and
if Messra. C.P.Dovol and W.F.Spetmnn ,
ho are mentioned as Clarodon candi
( lutes for Monday's tloction are , it is re-
pursed , advocates of the Clarendon
idea of "final and ultimata success ,
this fact should bo known by the electors
of our city. Mr Clarendon seemed to
do well in that ofJico , tut when superceded -
coded by another ho should have retired
gracefully , as did others before him and
others since him. If ho wat not desired
ho should have soon that and not aimoU
to rim what ha.i ninco boon
known annually as "the Clarendon
ticket. " His perseverance in this direc
tion the paot four yeara has boon inilom-
tn blo , but not agreoible to our citizens
and it is now time a line hould Im
Irawn. While it is hinted that Mr
CUirendon has spent money to elect such
men as members of the board as ho lion
wanted , I do not belio\ that if this had
been generally known it would havu
been endorsed , and in Monday's election
it mi ht bo well to enquire
into this matter , and if DoVol and Spot-
man , while they are excellent men and
irreproachable in character , are known
as "Clarendon men , " it might bo well to
look around with a view to selecting men
not in accird with the annual oyo-sor
movement of the pant. In opposition to
the "lifo-loii ( { " idea of the question , Dr
Macrao and Jl , T. Bryant are spoken of
as candidates. If thoao Kontlemon
.iro not in favor of a further continuance.
.if the one man idea , as I am assured they
are not , there is but little doubt of their
nuccoss on Monday.
Council Bluffr wants and should aim to
continue the excellence of her echooU ,
but continual changes are not calculated
to maintain this desirable end ,
