The gathering was largo and the enthusiasm very groat. TUK Br.i : is in .receipt of the March number of The Pocket Railway Guido of Iowa , published by Thomas F. Nelson , of Cedar Rapids. For simplicity , conve nience and reliability , it cannot easily bo equaled , and it is almost indispensable to nnyono traveling in Iowa. The city council should take immediate stops to make the street car company pay for the paving between the rails. The company got out of paying for the dirt iiiliug , and it will got out of paying foi the paving unless care is taken. The nmount is about $24,000. A Shenandoah mother says the boyi attending the public schools are font becoming - coming educated as thieves. She com plaius that the boys ateal the ribbons of the girls' hair , and that her own daughtoi lias thus lost over thirty yards in one term. Her daughter must bo n favoriU with the boys. Last evening Rev. T. J. J. B Kent , ono of Walnut's goners merchants , is reported aa in Gnunclj trouble , and creditors have seized th etock ou a mortgage of $2,000. In th amaah and general rush to secure claiini one of Wuluut'a justices issued an al iachment for $550 , causing considorabl comment on this illustration of the if noranco of the law shown on the part c many juiticoi , the limit of jurisdictio being considerable under that amount. Some of the students in the Bloomi school were taken to the pumping houe of the waterworks the other day to si the big machinery at work , and have explained by Prof. Johnson , the toachc in ncienqo. The next trip of the kind : to bo to the gas works. Such visits i connection with the study of books giv the student * a clearer and more practia idea of what science and mechanics at doing , i K. A. W , Cofltnan , of A VMS , U about t first to try the experiment of boycotting Council Blufla , because of the recent court house election. Having occasion to visit the city ho determined not to patronize any hotel hero , and so stopped over night about two miles away from the heart of the city. Jn the morning ho found to his horror that ho was still inside the city limits , and that ho had after all his pains patronized a Council Bluffs establishment , lie will doubtless next time got moro definite bearing * . Next Thursday evening there is to bn a masquerade at the roller skating rink. None will bo allowed to skate except those in full suit as well as on masque , and such must present their invitations at the door. THese desiring to attend can secure invitations of the managers. The public generally is invited to witness the masquerade , but those who take part must present an invitation and appear not only masked but in full dress. It is expected that the event will bo of un usual interest. The Walnut paper howls because the count of the vote in Council Bluflaon the court house proposition was not enjoined , the wise editor claiming that the polls were kept open until 0 o'clock at night , which ho declares to bo n fraud. Sn far as this city is concerned , there is a frank admission that the polls were kept open until 0 o'clock at night , but the differ ence hero seems to have boon that at the opening of the polls in the morning the necessary proclamation waa made that the polls would bo kept open until 0 o'clock at night , whereas in some places in the county the proclamation was neg lected , and on hearing by telephone in the evening that Council Bluffo was voting ing after 0 o'clock , the polls there were reopened , and the voting began again. One young man prepared to wed on the sly Saturday , and going to the clerk's ofiico procured the necessary license , in vested his dollar and started after his bride , but the intended father-in-law waa a little too quick for the young man , and the latter found to his chagrin that the girl had boon sent out of the city , just where is not known , but it is surmised she has been placed in a boarding school , with the instructions to the teachers tc watch her closely. On learning this the young man hurried back to the clerk'i office , Jiaid another dollar to have the names scratched oft" the record , ant thought ho had the matter hushed up , but during his absence u newspaper Cent had copied the names off the book , ant the young man had another chase to fine : him and keep the names outof the paper , The affair had by this time leaked out it other ways , and now the only chance thi young man has for peace is to keep a bcw of cigars setting on his desk in the inaur anco ollico , so as to lot the matter end it smoke if possible. Three Propositions 10 lie Voted Upon in Regard to School Matters , Two Directors lo lie Chosen. Elections nro crowding in thick and foaU The count of the vote at tlio special election on the proposition for building anew now courthouse and jail had hardly been finished when the city election came , and now a weak has not pasted and still another election comes. Many nro apt to pass this school election slightly by , and pay little attention to it , and yet it is really one of the most important elec tions of the year. Two directors are to bo chosen to fill the vacancies caused by the expiration of the terms of Mr. Drawer and Mr. Clausen. Mr. Brewer resigned several months ago , and moved to Minneapolis , but the vacancy was not filled , and now the term is expired for which ho was elected. It is n matter of great importance who are chosen to fill those two vacancies There prob ably will bo candidates sprung upon the voters to-day as for the past two or throe school elections , who are ex pected to act in the interests of some per sonal scheme , or to bo the tools for the furtherance of some personal ambition. The voters should therefore inquire care fully before voting , and any candidates who are thus sni'king the ollico shall be ignored completely. The drift has boon for several years hero in the direction of making the control ot the public schoels a moro bit of plunder to bo struggled for like a political ollico. The school inter ests shall bo above all this and the vo ters shall promptly rebuke at the polls any scheme for the personal gratification of any ono man or sot of men. lit times past men , who were othorwoiso not ob jectionable , have appeared as candidates , and have received many votes , because it was not known , that they were but the tools to keep along the ambitious designs of sumo shrewd man or his clique. To day only such men as are free from such schemes , men who will work for the interests of the schools , and not for the interests of some particular person or clique , shall receive the votes of the people. With the warn ing that in all probability an attempt will bo made to-day to mislead voters , every citizen should cast his ballot thoughtfully and intelligently. Aside from the election of the two trustees , the following propositions are to bo voted upon , and as there is a press ing demand fur moro school accommoda tions , there will doubtless bo little oppo sition to them : 1. Shall the independent school dis trict of Council Blull's issue its bonds to the amount of twonty-livo hundred dollars lars (82,500) ) , duo ton years after date and paynmo at the pleasure of the district , at any time before duo , drawing interest at not exceeding ( i per cent per annum , for the purpose of obtaining a loan to bu used in finishing the Twentieth avenue school building beyond the § 10,000 here tofore appropriated. 2. Shall the independent schooldistrict ' of Council BlulTs issue its bonds 'to the amount of twelve thousand dollars ( $12,000) ) , duo ten years after date , and payable at the pleasure of the diatrict at any time before duo , drawing interest at not exceeding 0 per cent pur annum , for the purpose of obtaining a loan , to be used in the erection of a six-room school building to take the place of the Center street school building. ! l. Shall the independent school districl of Council Bluffs sell the Stutsman street school building and grounds and issue its bonds to the amount of ton thousand dollars lars ( $10,000) ) , duo ton years after date , and puyablo at the pleasure of thodistricl at any time before duo , drawing interest at not exceeding 6 per cent per annum , for the purpose of obtaining a loan , to bi .used , with the proceeds of the sale of the Stutsman street school housoandgronnd > and the $10.000 voted lit the annua mooting on March 12,1833 , in purchns ing grounds and erecting thereon an oiuht-room school building to accommo < duto the pupils attending the Stutsmar school and the grammar pupils in tht eastern part ot the city. not onlj the lowest , but givns a present with cac ) purchase of ono dollar.
