The democrat In their convention yes

heavy burden , that ot Pottibono for alderman -
dorman at forgo. His career as a mem
ber of the school board has not made him
unduly popular. A man who is so sot
gainst Sunday schools will hardly catch
the votas of those who are so anxious to
have the city reformed morally , while
'those who howl for financial reform will
not be over-confident that they will gel
it at bis hands.
The democratic convention yesterday

to prevail on any of the men they nt
to accept the nomination.

ilr. Keating entered the room nnd called
ho convention to order again , thus
gnoring the action previously taken by
. Frainoy. Mr. Frainoy nominated
) r. Cook na chairman. Mr. Holmes
lominated Mr. W. II. Ware , and this
wan Bcccndod. As the chairman was
about to put the vote on Mr. Ware's
name , Mr. Frainoy claimed the right to
mllot. Mr. Koating declared the amend-
nont making Mr. Ware chairman car
ried. Mr. Frainoy called for n division ,
and then for the ayca and cays. An
other war of words arose between Ilolmcs
and Frainoy. Ilolmos insisted that Dr.
Cook was not a delegate. The doctor
explained that ho had a proxy
A motion was made to vote
by ballot. The chairman ruled
out of order , as .Mr. Ware had already
boon declared oloctod. Mr. Frainoy
then howled , nnd the opposition tried to
stamp him down. "Don't lot thorn bull
doze you. " "Give ua a square deal , '
and other wrangling words wera hurloc
From ono side to the other. Frainoy ap
pealed from the decision of the chair
Mr. Ware spoke on the appeal nnd tool
the ground that the call for ayes an <
nays was not made between the putting
of the vote and the decision. Dr. Cool
tried to speak. Mr. Holmes called him
to ordor. Cries wont up for Holmes to
"ait down wo'ro tired of you. " The
chairman shut out Dr. Cook , as it ha
not boon yet decided whether a mat
could sit in the convention of n proxy.
Then Mr. Ware took the chair , whil <
hisses and applause were about evenly
divided. Ho thanked the convention
just the same , and made a little speech
in which ho prophesied that the comin
election would bo an epoch in the histor ,
of the state nnd of the city. Ho urgcc
the convention to nominate men of in
tegrity.
Mr. Frainoy nominated as socrotar ;
Edward Bates. Mr. Holmes amcndoc

and the motion was again declared to
prevail. Mr. Holmes was nominated fo
assistant secretary , but ho declined. Hlr
am Shoemaker was then nominated. Mr
Frainoy objected to Holmes declining
as ho hod boon chosen against his will.
Then this was dropped and a motion
made to appoint a committee on crodon
'tials , ono from each ward , the motioi
being the first which was carried withou
a storm. The chairman named G. A
Holmes , J. J. White , F. W. Spolman , J
J. Frainoy.
The committee on credentials after
twenty minutes of retirement reported
Mr. Frainoy moved that proxies bo

puttlilg llio motion Holmes called for a
division and Frainoy for the ayca nnd
nays. The division was taken and the
motion to lay was declared lost. It was
claimed that the motion was put wrong
nnd an appeal was called for. Mr. Wee-
loy denounced the chairman and called
ut cheers. Mr. Holmes' amendment
ras then put and declared carried ,
liases and laughter. Mr. Frainoy called
or a division. Mr. Holmes moved that
an informal ballot bo taken for mayor ,
7rainoy insisted on B > division. "Oivo
is a square deal , " called out one. ' 'Give
, c to ua or lot us disperse , " cried another.
The chairman decided to grant the divi
sion.- Holmes declared it out of order ,
and cheers followed. The chairman still
stuck to giving a division , and it was had
Niun wore in favor of delegates having
Miller proxies , and thirteen against this
amendment. Frainoy then ollored a resolution
elution that proxies bo debarred fron
voting. Holmes then spoke , urging hon
oat and fair dealing in order1 to Becun
success. Ho referred to the fourth wan
caucus , and was giving some bitter tall
when Frainoy and others intorruptoi
him. Ho refused to bo bound by any o
the chicanery of the fourth ward. II
appealed to all honest delegated to lot th
old time usage prevail , of permitting do !
eqatos to send proxies , and cry down a' '
such schemes.
Mr. Frainoy replied to the imputa
lions cast on nis ward , and its dolcga
lions. Ho p'ronounced such cnargos as
infamous , damnrd lies. The chairmu
) reminded him there was a degree of do
. coney and respectability which eve
democratic conventions were bound t
respect. Mr. Frainoy then touched u
the first ward caucus , and that it was
star chamber proceeding. To cifcot th
slurs against Jim Madden and 0. Wes
ley , ho oll'set G. A. Holmes and Pat Li
< > y. Then came erica of "sit down ,
' shut up , " etc.
- Pat Lacy then moved that each wan
cast its fill | vote in the absence of an
delegate. FraJney moved as an ; umeiu

of Mr. Bowman. Mr. Koatinp withdrew
Mr. Graham's name. Licy moved that
the vote bo taken by roll call , each dele-
; ate depositing his ballot as his name
was called. About the only quiet time
met by the convention was when the
'ormal billet was being counted. There
was almost a breathless silence as the
fifteenth vole for Vaughan had been
counted out by the tellers , and as the
sixteenth was called out the silence was
jrokcn up in a general hurrah. It was
{ uiotod down enough for the silence nec
