The past week has boon quito a busy mo in a social point of view , for as Lent is fast approaching the society people are mrious to obtain their full of gaiety and tinusetnont preparatory to a forty days' ' cat. cat.Tho The most brilliant event of the week was the reception on Monday evening at : ho UMNOim MANHIO.V. On that occasion Mr. and Mrs. CScorgo \V. Liningor , and their dauqhtor , Misa Flo'-onco , entertained thoi- many frionda it their elegant residence , No.I North Kiglitoonth strcol. It was a sort of iiouaowartning , the house having been closed for novornl munths undergoing ro- piirs , and in its proadnt condition it is elegant in the extreme. The interior has boon remodeled and the walls beautifully .roscood. An Italian artist has boon engaged - gaged for Bovoral months in decorating the walls and coilingn. Just as the hall door opens and ono ruisos his oyon , the ticturo of a llomnn chariot moeta the azo , upon the coiling. It is n beau tiful work and the artist was three weeks in placing it thoro. Upon the coiling of the dome are the heads of the two great composers , Beethoven and Mozart. The grandest work of all , however - over , is to bo found in the rear parlor , where the artist was seven weeks in flu shing the coiling alone. It is covered ever with figures of statuary and beauti ful scone.i , but it is impossible for us to uivo an accurate description of it at this writing , sulllco it to say that it is gor geous. Having completed the work of art and beautiuod their homo , Mr. and Mrs. Liningor and their charming daughter , uotorminiid to call in their numerous firionds and make merry. About ono hundred and fifty guests , both old and young , , were in at tendance , Bovoral of whom were from Council Bluffs. The house was boaulifully trimmed with natural llowors , a huge bank being arranged upon the parlor table. The "louao was brilliantly illuminated and presented a beautiful appearance. Hod man's full orchestra was in attendance and furnished oxquiaito music , to the do- ightful strains of which , the young poo- ilo tripped the light fantastic. An olo- , ant supper was nerved in the largo room immediately over the parlors. It was a nodel of tlio culinary art and was highly easing to the palates of the guests. The toiloU worn by the lady guests were elaborate and many of. them were now and purchased for the occassion , and lovoral of them were direct from Paris. Taken as a wholn , it was ono of the most brilliant parties over given in thia city and will long bo remember by the guests who were ao royally entertained by the 'Linningors. The mooting was presided over by fudges Wakoloy and Novillo. A great majority of those present took part in the mooting , all speaking in the highest terms of praise of him who was so sud denly taken away. The following resolutions wore pre sented and road by E. W. At the conclusion of their reading Mr. Simoral paid the following eloquent tribute to his friend's memory : Annunss or MIL SI.MEHAL. May it please the court : As ono by ono the fatal asterisk of death is placed op posite the names of our jirofessional brothers , it is moot that wo who remain should stay for a space the strifes and conllicta ot the bar to offer n tribute to the departed , as well as to contemplate that which must inevitably come to us all. You who are older in the law are butter able to judge of Mr. Chadwick's legal ability than I , who best know and loved him an a friend , and only thus do I comu to speak in his memory. I know him intimately from the time ho came among us. _ There is no ono well acquainted with him but will bear testimony to the laruo generosity of heart , the frank , open manner , _ the honesty of purpose which characterized his every walk in lifo. To his friends ho was universally kind and afl'dctionate ; he bore nialico towards none. none.Ho was a young man of strong charac ter. The great , dcsiro of his lifo was to improve the present opportunities that the future might raise him higher in his profession and in the esteem of his fel low moti. Certainly of him it can truly bo said ; "Well done , good and faithful jorvant. " Those who enjoyed the privi lege of visiting him in his homo know manly pride ho took in all things to that little home. 'Tho child who enters lifo comes not with knowledge or Intent. So thoao who enter death must go as little children sent ; Nothing is known. ] tut I believe that God Is over-head ; And aa Ufa Is to the living , no death Is to the dead. " Thus narrow is the passage between the lifo that is and the life to come , that the eye of faith can almost gain a peep into the paradise of God. To wife , mother , sister , friends , wo can only say "In the room of this grief-shadowed present there shall bo A present in whoso reign no ( friof shall gnaw The heart , nnd never shall n tender tlo Ho brokeu-in whoso rulgu the eternal change That waits on growth ami notion shall proceed With overlaattnp concord , hand in hand. " The adoption of thoao resolutions was seconded by Mr. Sivitzler , who said : "lie was a just judge and maintained his.part with ability , honesty and integ rity. I was always forcibly struck with ono great quality of him thoswiftnos with which ho decided his cases. So aoo as the arguments were concluded bj counsel ho made his decision with clear ness and couniga , and having done ao n attorney or uuitor loft his court feolin that injustice had been done him. To the Editor of Tlio Boo Several well moaning people i vo criti cised the action of the board of edudjon ; in the "columns of "tho press. This is why wo come to the front. The commit tee on rules recently revised the rules the board , and they in their wisdom substituted stitutod Decoration day in lieu of Wash ington'a birthday. The committee knev they would bo targets [ for criticism , bu were looking only to the best interests o the schools. It is with no 'disrespec that the usual custom of closing the schools is dispensed with ; on the contrary wo think the return of each anniversary is a fitting time to instill into the minds of our school children historic events cbv oring this period , and to that end they caused the assembled scholars in the sev eral buildings to listen to appropriate ex erclses especially designed for this occa eion these cXerciaos to take the place ol the regular work. Certainly no ono would charge the board with depriving any child of his rights. There is no com pulsion in this matter. The schools are open a portion of the day and for a gooc purpose , Wo anticipate that the chil dren will in future years look forward to this day with no small deureo of pleasure as extraordinary efforts will bo made to have the programme interesting and pro- litablo.
