When the deplorable financial condition of the
New York Metropolitan opera house was pub
lished the other day , Mr. Maplooon in an in
terview did his bo't to create the Imprestion
that Abbey was bankrupt. Now the fact is
tnat Abbey , in the c.no of the Metropolitan ,
was simply the manager for a lot of million ,
airoa , who insisted upon building the opera
house in their own way und practically manag
ing it. These rciitlemen u ere all % eryclo\er
business men , but they knew nothiutr of the
atrical or operatic management. Ketmlt
failure. As to Abbey , he loses little in the
affair , and ho is probibly in his other ventures
mukiug moro money than hn ov er mudo. Irv
ing is pitying largely. The Grand opera house
in Now York is doing nn immense business ,
and so is his Park theater. Ho is certainly
losing money upon his opera company , hut his
losses are small in comparison to his g ins in
other directions.

not an artiste. She has learned nothing in
these four years ; the exquisite child has not ,
as we hoped , developed into a great prinin
donna. It Is the same witchery of clanco and
gcstmfl , the same dnlicato vocalizition , tlu
same slender volte ( alittle worn and weakened
by four years' uingtt ) , thu same originality and
| ) iiuant | personality in her acting , but neither
finish or depth nlther as actress or singer. In
a word , Marie Van Zandt is a suoiled child -
spoiled first by her midden and complete sue

social triumphs and hy the injudicious petting
of her P.ulfiau lady friends. "

CincAo , February 22. A petition
as forwarded to the Illinois delegation
i congress to-day , signed largaly by
ealthy wittlo-ownora and prominent
usiness men of this city , urging the
assngo of tlio plouro-pnuumonia bill now
undiiu in conguHi. The petition recites
'tat the bill was drawn by a committee
| ipoin ed by tlio convention of cattle-
users nnd farmers , representing nn nct-
lal ownership of not loss t > mn $50,000-
00 worth of cattle , and that among those
the assisted in framint ; the bill weromon
f largo osperienco nnd among the larg-
atcattlo owners of the country. The
lotition declares that the protest on the
art of the Chicago cattle brokers , which
.xa heretofore ) been noticed , is based
pen a misapprehension of the nrovis-
ons of the bill , and that the bill can in
10 wise interfere with the cattle traflic in
tatea not ail'dctcd with contagious plouro-
ineumonia , and in these infected states
n a degree no uroafor than essential to
iradication of the disease.

Senator McPhorson's ailvor bill is but
another device of the money sharks to
strike nt silver. I hey nro much oxer
ciscd to find a way to stop the monthly
coinage of dollnrti , but are entirely un
willing to nccopt the legitimate nltorna
native , of issuing cortilicatca on silver
bullion deposited , a dollar for each -112
grains 000 fino. But according to the
goldito faction represented by Senator
McPheraon , they nro willinu
to issue certificates on silver
bullion , provided the nmouni
of bullion icpnsited fcr a dollar shall be
enough more than the standard to bring
the market \uluo of the silver so taken
to a par with gold. That is , ho would
require , at the present market value of
ailvor , the deposit of some -150 grnins ol
sih or for a dollar , and wo presume , at
the process of depressing the price of
silver and inflating the price of gold went
on , ho would , from time to time , require
an addition to the amount of ailver de
posited for each dollar , so that the ailvtn
certificate ) of last month might bo at a
premium this month and at iv discount
next ; thereby pioviding an iasuo that
would bo an lluctuating in value ns green
backs in war times. It is an impracticable
plan , which could not and ought not be
made to work. The only standaid dollar
lar this country over had waa the silver
dollar of 412\ grains , 900 firm ; Unit it
the standard to-day ; nnd the gold coiun
are simply multiples of this standard.
The war on mlyor hia dapressed itu mar
ket price , but it is a ahanip for the chiul
silver producing country in the world to
join in the ell'ort to dopreuinto tlio value
of its own precious inctidn , either ol
them. The present standard of cuinugi
is all right , but if there is moro of tlu-
actual coin on hand than is useful , of an }
denomination , lot bullion bo deposited
and certificates issued , according to stand
ard value , to whatever amount may bo
demanded.
