Illinois null limit Items.
To the IMItor of Tun BKK :
Turning eastward for n brief tour , your
correspondent stopped across the border
ino of our great and growing state of
Nebraska to pick up some items of inter-
crest scattered hero nnd there through
Iowa and Illinois. In contrast wo are
roe to presume that our fresh and young
sixteen suffers nothing when the coinpar-
son is instituted with her elder sisters ,
whoso homo land lies further toward the
rising sun. Our line of travel waa along
; ho great Northwestern railway , who o
immense traffic has largely boon enhanced
t > y the products furnished on the western
side of the famous Muddy. Cattle , hogs ,
corn nnd the smaller grains , all destined
for the Chicago and Now York markets ,
come pouring along in unstinted incasuro
and'quality , and wo might add quality as
well , showing- conclusively the al
most unlimited 'producing capac
ity of this newly opened state
Towns in Iowa , which a fov years ago
were all astir with the hum of business
and growth , are fast assuming habits of
quietness and a maturity of expansion
which has been forced upon thorn by the
enthusiastic interest springing up for the
the west. Dunlap , Donison , Iowa City
and Marshalltown , whilst retaining a
strong hold upon their several commer
cial interests , have the appearance of a
good many of their people being away
from homo. The farm lands in Iowa ,
which , as a state , now Booms to be
eclipsing Illinois in many respects , are
being brought up to a high state of cul
tivation and are permanently sure of a
heavy demand for and a great wealth in
their possession. In many of the coun
ties , especially in the northern portion of
the state there is great capacity for the
production of immense wheat and corn
crops as has been proven in the test of
former years.
At present the absence from its largo
corn-cubs and granaries of small grain , is a
a forcible reminder of the sere disappoint
ment which fell upon some of the tillers
of the soil during the past year whilst
the great piles of uncribbod corn ant
crowded bins of grain in Nebraska are
the refreshing exponents of the pros
perity which crowned our state during the
past two years. Cedar Rapids is pushin ?
on with all her might to become the
metropolitan inland city of Iowa. Am
there seems to be little room for doubt in
the successful accomplishment of this
aim. In manufacturing interests and ai
expounded business in her schools am
even collages and church enterprise , this
flourishing city presents many attractions
to business enterprise and home-seekers
as they are passing to and fro in the lam
to-day. And yet compared with
pur own Omaha with her grow
ing industries , with her network
of railways , her increased manufacturing
facilities , with her great syndicates of im
provement and wide awake enterprise
which thrills through every fiber , our
metropolis must stand conspicuously
above the commercial conties of her sister
competitors across the river.
Clinton nestled close to the edge of the
deep and majestic Mississippi still holds
the championship in the lumber interests
and depends largely on Nebraska patron
age to relieve her of her large supplies
And whilst wo fool kindly towaids her fo :
the generous supplies of this needoc
material out of what to construct our
house ? , build our fences and supply nur
vast ranches with shed 'protection for our
herds of stock , yet wo cannot conceal our
convinction that Clinton has pleasant
thoughts roachiiigout toNebm-slia because
of the handsomu pric'ts received for her
accumulated eiores < > t maturial.
Crossing tnu great Kith or of Waters ,
we entered thu uttiaciive nnd beautiful
Rock River valley. The farms aro'in a
high state of cultivation , and correspondingly -
ingly high prices nio echodul/d when
those farms are ofioiod for sale , in the
contemplation of which the n of limit
ed moans ia apt to take seriously to heart
the advicu of" Iloraco ' '
sage Greuley , 'go
west , young man , " and wo found that
many of the younger and oven elder men
from this lo'caljty had acted on the sug
gestion , and are now the bono and sinew
of Nebraska's working force. Wo found
Morrison , the county seat of Whitcsido ,
ono of the most handsome towns in this
rich Rock River country. With a back
ground of several thousand acres of tim
ber land , and with an outlook southward
upon this finest panorama of fertile prai
ries , with strong business and commer
cial interests , schools , churches and hand-
BOtae dwellings ; we "felt that any ono
mightjbo tfopfent to jiljlirf such * a spot a

dent t > t Missions , Rev1. Orlsamsn. R6b-
ortson Bros. , "bankers , Cleveland. Wai-
lace Payne , and a Tioat , of others scattered
far and widu over the state.
in Chicago we 'wore not more sur-
priiodwith the undiminished hum and
activity in business circled than wo were
with the continued expansion of this vast
cjty of the lakes , giving assurance to the
presumption that no one can toll to what
extent this national metropolis may still
grow. But oven Chicago in her great'
new , counU much on the patronage
which cornea to her from Nebraska's increasing -
creasing products. Many inquiries were
made of your correspondent concerning
the wonder/ul state of Nebraska , comprising -
prising BO largely the great American do -
prt , and now openinjfin rich fields , tring.
ing | n the bounteous harvests tor Ohjcago

Great interest ia manifested in the
growth of Omaha , which ia now looked
upon as ono of the rising citiea of this
great nstion. The confidence of business
men in her future ia expressed in strong
terras. Her patronage and influence'arc
eagerly sought as ait essential factor } \ \
building up their own great interests.
The nbundant crops for the past two
years in Nebraska , the stcaay and some
what phenomenal growth of business in
lior several towns and cities have widely
advertised our stnto in tho' favor of n vast
number who no longer look upon'tho of-
'ort to build up a pruminont state west of
; ho Missouri as a moro'experiment ,
Thoio who have n foothold in Nebraska
nay well fool thankful in view of their

Some of the intemperate temperance
non of Maine have just boon holding nn
annual mooting nt Augusta. They nro
organized as the "Mnino Stnto Temper
ance society , " nnd they have held annual
sessions nt the state capital for over
; hirty years. They always meet when
the v legislature I is in session , nnd
generally thn governor of the state pre
sides at their sessions. They nro repre
sentative "temperance" men of the state
mil have putposoly influenced the leg
ation of the state on the question of li-
iuor selling. They are the real
kuthors of its present stringent
iquor law and all thu sharp tooth that
iavo boon inserted in it , from year to
'oar , since its original enactment , over n
[ iiarlor of a century ago. They may bo
> ro.sumod to know all about the condition
of the temperance cause and their utter-
incos will plainly nhow what kind of men
t has for loaders and directors in the
'ino-trco state as well as how it has
lourishod under their fostering caio ,
mckcd by all the law they desired to
iavo placed on the stntulo books.
Ono of the speakers at this annual
mooting , Colonel W. T Eustiss , who was
heir last candidate for governor , laid the
> lame for the nou-onforcoment of the law
upon the officers , who failed to do their
luty. Ho said the republican party , bo
ng the dominent ono , is to blame for
.his ; that that party is "in. league nnd
: ull sympathy witb the rum power in the
state and nation. " Ho said that once
; here was a public sentiment sustaining
; ho officers in doing their duty ;
jut to-day that sentiment is want
ing. No man when elected to
oflico , no matter how pure his
temperance views , had gene any
further in tire execution of the liquor
law than the party which stood behind
iim , whether police officer , county attor
ney , governor or president. On Ex
change street , in Bangor , ho had , that
day , counted seven open bar-rooms-
open in every sense of the word and ho
saw from the street men drinking in
; hom. "They will remain there and oth-
irs will come , " said ho , "so long as wo
ruckle to the party in power. The law
s a dead letter in most towns in Maine.
Sbwhoro and never has the republican
larty boon in sympathy with prohibi
tion , " His remarks were received with
applause.
The Rev. Mr. Molntyro , of Water-
ville , said the blame lay largely with the
prosecuting officers , and they were guilty
of perjury in neglecting to prosecute of
fenders. The records would show county
attorneys and municipal judges to bo
"guilty of complicity in crime with rum
sellers. It is quite customary , " ho said ,
"for these officials to settle with offend
ers for § 100 , when under the law they
should have boon sent to jail ; and some
times cases are bought ofl'for § i > or § 10. "
Ho extolled the law , , but complained
that it was not enforced' , and that public
sentiment was not sufficiently "educated"
in its favor.
The Rev. Mr. Haskell , of Damaris-
cotta , said that for the "past ton years
rum-selling has been on the increase in
Maine. " Ho knew whereof he affirmed.
"Tho sheriff , the county attorneys and
all vhe officers who ought to enforce the
law , are combined to protect the rum-
seller. The liquor traffic is constantly
increasing in the state , commencing in
the east and working rapidly towards the
west. " There are twenty fivoyonncmon
in his town that were addicted to drink
ing -where there was ono seventeen years
ago.
ago.Mr. . Burke , of Somerset county , said
that ho knew of his own knowledge that
rum-selling was on the increase iu his
county.
Joshua Nye , pt Augusta , the groal
apostle of prohibition , said that Con
gressman Dingloy's statement that there
was no liquor-selling in many of the towns
of the state , was "a fraud , a delusion and a
humbug ; " liquor selling was terribly on
the increase all over the state , and every
woman and child in the state knows it.
Last Sunday two sleigh loads of people
left this city , purchasing rum at a drug
store , nnd starting for > Vcst Watervillo.
Before getting seven miles on their way
they were lighting drunk. This was n
usual occurrence hero , and in nearly
every largo villngo in the otato. Drug
stores weio only gilded lum hulls under
another name. "
Thus thuau mun went on in u
strain for two days.
