The project for holding terms of cout nt Avoca has got BO far as being intro duced as a house bill , and referred to committee. There arc now on an average fou lodgers a night at the now city jail , win come in of their own accord and beg fo a chance to sloop there. Ho brings his entire stable o fourteen horses , including the celebrate Col. West and Wostmount , besides number'of very promising horses. It is stated by thosn who ought 1 know that there has not boon for years t much interest in the churches of the cil as now. The revival meetings are Loir largely attended , the church members ai waking up , and many who aronotchurc mombortf nro ejcprpssing a doairo to b come such , Platld OVorton , the wood and coal mft ! has devised a now Echome. Every 01 who purchases a ton of coal gets a tick with a number on it , and on the first next month ho will give away a ton poM , by chance , sp thftf whoever holi the lucky number gels ft toil bt coal f. . Nothing. Sco hts advortiromont in ai nothtor column. Mr. Weir , who has just como her/o manager of the Council Blufls board underwriters , is arranging , as his oilic room No , 5 , Everett block , and raakii ready to sotllo down to business in ear est , Ho makes a favorable impressl here , comes here highly rocommondc and is doubtless the right man for t right place. From Tuo Hamburg Times it is learn that Rood , of The Farrogut News , I been arrested on a warrant issued by P. Beach , justice of the peace , on a w rant charging him with perjury in swe. ing falsely to the subscription list of 1 News in order to get the county print' ' ] The case is to como up to-day , and pro ises to b ? a lively one. Articles of incorporation have bt filed for a now opera house at Wain the company being composed of lead ] citizens of that place , and the stc fixed at $5,000. That amount will i go very for toward building an "opi house , " and perhaps some other na would bo more fitting , but opera hoi or hall , it is evident that Walnut has | both enterprise and a promising futu Justice Abbott's time was again tal up yesterday with the trial of some ji about a chest of tools case held for un i paid board bill , or so'mothing of t : sort. The lawyers spent a good deal the time arguing as to whether a t cheat was necessary to a man's earninj living , and therefore exempt , or whet ! n n , it was only the tools that wore cxoinp a grave quwtion , indeed. The overcoat thieves still hover abe Woiriok'a boarding liouso has been ewe of a neconil raid. This time f bvwvoat * were taken , while the board were at Bupner. A sealskin cap i otiuir Mrttolea were abe taken. ' . poKe ware -promptly notified , but ikippftd hurriedly aorosa river , and at least one of the coats wns shoved up in an Omaha pawn shop bo- 'ore 0 o'clock in the evening. It wns the ono belonging to Andy Osier , who 'ound it there yesterday morning , and recovered it on the payment of the $2.00 'or which it was pawned. An effort is being mode to got the pu pils of the deaf and dumb institution tc jive an exhibition in some down-towr hall at some date not too far distant. The institution has a good deal of talent will : which to make up a pleasing programme , and it would give many of the citizens i convenient opportunity to see the wonders dors of the sign language. If such aplar can bo carried into execution , it will fine no heartier supporters than these win have boon privileged to see similar entertainments tainmonts at the institution , for thosi who have seen them can testify as to thoi merit and onjoynbility. It is to bo hope * that before long such an exhibition ma ; bo given at some place within easy accos of all who would like to attend. Ono of the attorneys who defends ii many criminal cases , threatens when i good opportunity arises , to seek the release lease of his client from the present count ; jail , on the ground that it is an unfi place in which to keep a prisoner , and i confident the courts will support such i view , as the grand jury has already condemned domnod the jail , and there is an abundance anco of evidence as to its unfitness ti keep men. In case of such a docisioi the present jail would bo emptied enl ; too quickly , for such a hole being made every prisoner would got some lawyer t help him out on this claim. If these wh are so eager to vote down the propositio : for a now court house and jail shoul find that all the prisoners in this count ; would have to bo taken to some othc county for safe keeping , they would be gin to wish they hadn't , as the expense of ollicors taking prisoners backwards an forwards , and other expenses , woul swell to an amount in a year -which woul make a hole in the $40,000 needed for now jail , The Union Pacific was to fulfill all il promises in regard to Union avenue b January 1st , and the ordinance giving i the right to use that avenue providai that if it fails to do as it agrees fc thirty days its right shall bo declared foi foitcd. The Union Pacific has failed fc thirty days since January 1st , and undc that ordinance it seems very plain tlir the city can now make it came to time an keep it ] promises. Where arc the ha hour dummies ? Where are the prov sions for running ferry cars up to Broac way ? Whdro nro the other things premised isod ? Even the building called a dope is kept closed when it ought to bo oper Last Sunday" , as on previous days , thoi were a number of ladies and children , t say nothing of men who had to stan around in the cold on the platform for half hour or moro while waiting for chance to take a train. Now that tli city can , under the ordinance , compi the Union Pacific to take up its tracl and if it fails to do so can have it take up at the expense of the company , thi power should bo used to make th Union Pacific como to time and keep i promises.
