I don't know. 1 used to sail on the old Sagamore with him , " ho said as ho took a short clay pipe from his mouth and shook his hond solemnly and medit atively. The speaker was a squnro-built man ho looked as though ho had fricecl wind , rain and snow for at least fifty years. Ho was scaled before a red-hot stove in a Hivur street saloon nnd a crowd if rough men , whoso taik proclaimed them to bo sailor * , completed a ring about the glowing lire. Sconu of them wore partially Intoxicated , and all wore smoking old pipes which sent forth an odor strong and rank. "There was something singular about that old boat , " the old nmn continued thoughtfully , after a pause , "and if you don't mind , fellers , I'll tell yo about her. " llis companions settled themselves comfortably to listen to the story , and after replenishing his ho "She built before pipe began i vrai long fore the war 0110 of the tirst propellers on the lakes , 13ig , high up and short , she was like a tub. Couldn't go much , but then wo thought she wns a touulnr clipper. I shipped in her somowhores about ' 53 or ' 54. Ole Cap'u Tippock was master. lie treated his men well. Used to get drunk every week , nnd , in fact , ho was pretty well soaked all the time. On the lirat trip the inato left us , an * the ole man qot another at Detroit. That was a bad day for the old Sagamore. Ho was a little man , with lifthtiiair and big yel low chin whiskers. Even his eye lashes wcro almost white. Wo know him as 'Mister' Gross. The now male was a lirst-rato seaman , but a mighty mean one to life men. Many a cusstn * I'vo got from him for not reaching the dock every time I cast the hoaving-lino for the shore when wo came to land.Vo had a funny little chap with us ns deck hand. Wo called him Spindle Jack , because ho was so weak and small. But ho was as sharp Ha a weasel , and know more than all the others put together. Some kind of a literary follow , 1 reckon , trying to got up his muscle ; but ho not'cr talked much about himself. Ono day when wo wcro near Buffalo some of us put up a job on the mate. Wo nearly sawed off a round of the wooden ladder going up to the hurricanu dock , and when the mate came down ho nourly br < > ko his neck. 11 o suspected the little fellW and swore hu'd get even with him sometime. In the fall of ' 51 wo left Chicago with a cargo of corn. As soon as wo were out of port Capt. Tippock got f uller'ii a tick , but wo got on all li ht and reached the straits. The old man went to bed an * wo stood oil' into Lake Huron. 'Mister' Ciross was savage. " The weather bccran to thicken and % vo had a nasty sea on by dark. At midnight wo men were called out. The sea was heavy and our old tub rolled like a ball. The wind blow terrible , nntl it was black as ink. The sheet anchor , which was outside the bovvs , old-fashioned style , had broken loose , and the tlukcs , were pounding against the sides. The mate yelled to 'Spindlo Jack1 to go over thu aide down onto the anchor with a line so as to haul it back in place. The little fool didn't stop to put the line ubout his waist , but took the end in his hand and clambered over. 1 sprang forward with a Lin torn to save him , but was too lato. Ho clung to the swinging anchor like a squirrel. Once a iuivo struck him and nearly washed him away , but he clung hard. He was passing a 'bight' ot the line under one of the tlukns , when the Sagamore gave a lurch that sent him under water , and careening back , the anchor was pounded against the side with fearful force. Poor little Jack got be- tweuit the Jluke and the vensel , bad luck to him. The next instant ho was gone. Then 1 saw him just a few feet away. He vvaa on the side of a big wave , * " which seemed to lift him up like a cork. By my lantern I saw him raise out of the water ns far as his waist nnd shako his fist at the mate. I looked around. Gross was leaning far over the rail , gazing with white face and pale lips ut the man in the water. I looked back. There was nothing to bo seen but black heaving waters. The wind soughed and moaned through the rigging and I turned in , feeling kinder creepy about the backbone. Lads , this happened in Georgian bay , and you all know the bottom tom of that black hole isn't far from the pits of hell. Wo got the anchor oil' all right , but in the morning wo found that wo hadn't made much headway in the gale. Night came on and I felt kind o' queer. The sky blackened up and the sea chopped just like they did the even ing before. An' the wind began to howl and screecli through the riggin1. I kept a sharp eye on the mate. Ho was { pale and iidgity , but seemed calm. 1 had the midnight watch at the wheel , and three times did I see that man try to go into the texaa and lay down , and three tinn s did I see him turn about and pace tlio hurricane deck as though pulled by some awful force. I remember it was jtut 1 o'clock when poor Jack wont. At 1 o'clock on thii night I heard a kind of a noise like that made by the bow of a boat cutting throui'h the water. It was on the port bow , and I sprang like a tiger to that side. 1 expected wo were bung run into , and in the twinkling of an eye had put the helm lmrd-n.port. But wh.it did I see ? The mute was bonding over the side tijl it seemed ho would go over every time the boat rolled , and out be yond him was something that made my hair stand up aud seem to turn gray. On the side of a wave , black as tar , was 'Spindle Jack , ' waist-high out of water , shaking his fist at Gross. Oh , but his face was pale , and it heomed to have a queer kind of a sinilo like a fcllcr'd have whm ho MUS murderinc- another in cold blood. I could see him as plain as day , an' his hand was bloody where it had been mashed by the anchor. Beforu I could look twice ho was gone. When the mate came up his face wai like a piece oT writing paper , nnd ho lookedntnio out of his fray eyes like an insane man. IJo made mo shudder. When daylight came wo were past Detroit , All wont Hell in Lake Erie , and when wo got to Buflnlo I began to fool as usual , So did the mute to all appearances. Wo started back light und had fine weather. It was Fri day afternoon when wo readied Lake Huron , and just as wo got out of the river , the idato told mo to take the trest shore up. I know ho vrantcd to kocp out of the Georgian Bay. Night came , and 1 got worse scared than ever. The nfcht was fearful dark , and a terrible bank of clouds swept up from off the west shore. Then came the wind. You know what it is , boys. As J hope to live another year , fellorH , that compass began to play false , til' I didn't know whcru wo were. Itvat the tnoio black heavy ni'jht with the moaning wind and heavy aca. When the rnito came oa deck I was at the wheel. The minute ho got ouUido Ilia door , ho turned whitu , and jumning tiwird mo , yelled with a curse , "Wo'ro in Georgian Bay again ' ' It was true , I had lost thu reckoning by reason c > f the compass , and what other power I know not , wo had been forced toward the north bcr . Twelve o'clock wino , and the mate tried to turn in , but every time ho reached his door ho twisted iround on his heel and began to pace up and down the dock. Ono o'clock came , and with it came Jack's ghost. I hoard the noise of a boat cutting the water , and there ho was in the black , tossing water , just the same ai before. 0 , how ho did look. Ifohaa it smile of triumph on his face , an' his formseeincd _ to bo covered with something shiny an' white that I could see through. The blood on his laisod fist was moro red than before. The mate was on the lower ilcck. With n hoarse cry ho sprang like .in . animal up to the hurricane , and with his hands over his eyes tried to kick open the door of the toxns. Ho couldn't do it. Dropping his hands , ho turned slowly around and looked at Jack His face was like stone. The form in the water raised its right arm with n'clonchcd list toward the black nky , and opened its mouth as if to speak , then there was nothing but darkness oil the water. 1 lioud the mate fall heavily on the floor of his sUlo-room , but could not le.i\oniy post. Ho came on dock' next morning nervous and sick. The ole man was still drunk. You can just bet I left the Saga- inoro when wo struck Chicago. Oipin' Tippock got sick , and the mate Had to sail her for Buffalo as master. 1 pitied him , but ho was plucky , and bound not to bo beaten by ghosts. Ho steamed out , and tlio old Sagamore was never hoard of more. She was traced into the Georgian Bay. A week biter the papers wore full of the sinking of the propeller Sagamore by a Canadian steamer , which cut her in two from the port aide during n black night on that fearful piece of water. All hands were lost. 1 believe in my inmost soul that poor little Jack wns the cause of it all , and I'll ' leave it to any honest man in the crowd. " The ancient mariner finished his talc , , and with his listeners gazed meditatively at the rod sides of the stove. Then , one utter another they knocked thoashcs from their pipes , stretched themselves with a scries of yawns , and departed of their sleeping places without passing a word of comment on the tale imfoldod by the griz zled veteran. 1'Tit UpmTjIlts Foot. His { otter on the question of his own identity is amusing. "What shall I do ? " ho ex claims. ' 'Is pome one who looks like Bcechor passing himself off for me ? Can not some one catch him , examine him in theology , make him preach and so detect the rascal ? " This seems n reasonable re quest. In all the world there is only one LSoeohor , so far as theology goes , and if the "bogus" one who is attending thea tres at unreasonable hours can bo caught and examined on the subject , as the genuine Bcckhor suggests , ho might be detected. Mr. Beechor having returned from Boston a reporter questioned him about the report of his having declined an in vitation to see Mrs. Langtry at Niblo's with the tallowing result : "Havoyou never seen Mrs. Langtry on the stage/ / " "No sirj I have not. " It now transpires that Mr. Beochor's preaonco at the play existed only in the fertile imagination of Ned Gil more , the theatric ! manager. This is the way it happened ; Mr. Gilmore yearned for a free advertisement ; so ho sent word to the Trioune Monday night that Mr. Bocclu'r would bo at Niolo's Tuesday evening. To a Tribune reporter who was at the theatre on the latter evening ho said that Mr. lieoohor had been at the performance and enjoyed it , but had gene homo early. The credulous reporter - or believed it , and was gulled. Mr. Gilmore said to-night that ho had mis taken John Wimau for Mr. Boechor , Ho afterward acknowledged that the whole thing was meant for a joke , nnd sejuibd to think it was very funny. The Tribune says of the affair : "Mr. Gilmore appears to wish the public to hink that ho regarded a stupid lie an a joko.
