While speaking of the coming week and looking ever the dates , our eye rests upon the figure 14 , and wo are reminded that the 14th day of February is St. Valentino's day , which is on Thursday next. For a week or moro piyst , the store windows have boon filled with little missives of love , bottcr known as valentines. They are of all shapes , sizes and descriptions , and are all the way from ono cent up _ to several dollars lars each. It seems as if the persona who design these hideous looking cheap valentines would run out of figuios after a time , but each year brings moro instead of loss. While speaking of valentines , a little history of St. Valentine , whoso birth is celebrated each year on February 14th , might not bo amiss : Saint Valentino , according to some ecclesiastical writers was a bishop , ac cording to others a presbyter , who was be headed at Rome in the reign of the em peror Claudius (270) ( ) and was early can onized. Whoatloy says that St. Valen tine "was a man of most admirable parts , and so famous for his love and charity , that the custom of choosing valentines upon his festival which is still practiced took its rise from thonco. Others de rived the custom from birds being sup posed to select their mates on this day ; others , from a practice prevalent in an cient Rome at the festival of the Lupor- calia , during the month of February , when , among other ceremonies , the names of young women were placed in a box , from which they were taken -by young men as chance directe . The pas tor of the early church finding it impos sibles to extirpate this pagan ceremony , changed its form. It was the custom on the eve of February 14ih , St. Valentino's day , to have the names of a select num ber of ono sex put into some vessel by an equal number of the other ; and there upon every ono drew a name , which , for the time being was called his or her val entine. The custom of choosing valen tines existed very early. Presents ol gloves , garters , nnd jewelry were com mon as valentines. IN THE rUTUHE. Amony the May events in the near future , which crowd thomsolvcs , fast ono upon the other , will bo the reception bj MHS. A. J. rorrj.LT.ON , at her residence. The Chicago Times of Friday says the Northwestern traffic1 association Booms to bo doomed , from what some of the prominent members said yesterday when aakod as to its future prospects. Said ono of them : "You can Bay that you know of ono road that will never call for another mooting of the North western traflic association , and the same with joforonco to the Central Iowa. Lot tliom go to pieces. They ought do. They are no longer of any service to the railway companies that are members , and wo shall never again ask that 11 moot ing shall bo hold for the consideration ol nny business , except for the purpose ol declaring the dissolution of them both. But , if wo lot thorn alone , they will soon die natural deaths , " ( Another high official said : "It will beef of no uao to try and patch up the prosonl difficulties with the Northwestern anc Central Iowa Traflic associations , ns Iho members have fully determined this time to end matters by ending both aasocia tions. It will bo of no use to moot anc try to patch up the present diflorences , as the members are BO wide apart in rogarc to certain business that they never wil come together. There has boon no moot ing called , and I shall not ask for one I don't want a mooting , and think this feeling is general among all of thd mem bers. " The attitude of those two members is fully shared by at l&ast ono moro , wlticl leavea the association \vith only a minortj ! representation , oven if a mooting shoulc bo called by the others , This action docs not necessarily mean that rates are to bo cut by the rival lines , but when the asso ciation ceases to have an existence it is but reasonable to expect there will bo a Bcrniilblo for business that will make things very lively for the western roads for a short timo. This is already expect ed , and at least ono road is known to bo already preparing for such an event in order to bo at the front when the rate- cutting begins. To USD the expression of an official in high standing , there will bo a "monkey and parrot" tiino over busi ness to the west and northwest in a very short time , and _ the "fur will fly" al every pomt _ of interest which can bo reached by rival lines , With Buch feeling manifested by mom- bora of the Northwestern and the Central tral Iowa Traffic associations , there cai bo but little doubt that both organize tions will bo permitted to pass out of ox istanco , and tliat as BOOH as they shall no longer bo recognized as being in a condl tion to enforce penalties , there will be a rush for business that will possibly resul in slaughtering rates to all points wes and northward.
