Permits to wed were yesterday granted to Hans Storjohaus and OhristinaStoron- berg , both of Minden ; also to William F. Wright and Janotta Young. Ooorgo Guanolla did not appear foi trial yesterday morning in the police court , on the charge of being drunk , and as ho was released by the mayor , soon after being arrested , there appears no bond to bo forfeited. It is to bo hoped that Mr. Chapman , manager of the roller skating rink , will bo able to secure Mr. Will H. Daniel to giro another exhibition before his de parture oast. Mr. Daniel's interest in the Omaha rink expires to night. The examinations in progress at SI. Joseph's academy will close Wednesday. Thus far they show that Prof. Slattory and his assistant have boon doing excel * lent work , and the pupils have evidently improved the advantages afforded them by so excellent instruction. Rov. Thomas Wilson , a colored Bap tist preacher , whu has just como to thu city to work for snners , has had a practi cal instance brought forcibly to his at tention , ono Thomas Grisbio , whom he had taken to board , having skipped out without paying his board. Ho now pro poses to try human law on him. A lively row is reported as having taken place in Ida Storey's house Sunday night , which the police did not seem to get on to , . Yesterday City Marshal Jackson filed complaints against Nina Long , Ada Allen , Noriok , Hondorshott , McDonald , and Graham , as the young men concerned in the aftair , and it will probably bo aired up. The case of the men complained of for leaving a dead horao lying in an alloy near the Northwestern depot came to an end yostorday. The evidence showed that Dill bought the old sick horse of Gibson , and "in a few days got sick of his bargain , and told Gioson ho would not take care of the horse or keep it any longor. The horse wosjillowed to stay in tho.barn for two weeks , and it seems that it starved to death , instead of dying from disease. The court ordered Dill to have the body jrornoved , and taxed up the costs to him. Mrs. A. Bryan , dressmaker. Cutting -a specialty. 004 S. Main st. , up stairs. Alderman MoMahon thought ono ouqht o be retained. Aid. James thought- there was too much of a rush. The water works had not boon accepted. If the steamers were old the city would bo at the mercy ol ho water works. Aid , Keating did not think it was wise or the city to bo paying out ? 200 01 5300 per month unnecessarily , as ho water \rorks would undoubtedly be used , Aid. Jamei did not believe the old sontract with the water works would lold , and thought that a now contract vould bo made. Aid. Eiclier did not see this , although 10 did i\ot \ believe in selling more than one steamer now. The motion of Aid. Keating was , after urthor eiscussion , lost by a vote of 2 to 4 , An ordinance was presented for the widening of Glen avenue at the intorsoc- ion with Broadway , thus taking in the round on which the old city building nd engine house now stand. Studio 12 Nort Main street. SZJRPKISING- SIGHT , An Kfllgy of Dr. Gross RUHR from i Tree in IJayllBfl Park. A surprising sight mot the oycs of tin early birds who wont through Baylis park yesterday morning , and a crowc soon gathered about a trco in the nortl part of the park , from ono of thi sranchos of which was hung an effigy o Dr. Croas , who shot Dr. MoKuno las summer. There was a pretty fair suit o clothes , filled out , a black cap covering what was supposed to bo the head , and t regular hangman's knot made in th" noose which surrounded the neck. Then were two placards upon the form , om reading , "Dr. E. D. Cross , high-tonoi murderer. The coming event of 1884. ' The other placard read , "Duty domandi the annihilation of this wretch when cowardly injustice has thus far shielded VltULANTES. " The form dangled there an hour or s < after first being discovered. It wai evidently put up there nom < , imo during the night by par ies whoso identity will probablj lot soon , if over , bo knjwn. The loca , ion selected was particularly aggravating , t being within sight of Dr. Cross' house ; and also the scene of the tragedy. The mayor on having his attontior called to the affair at once ordered the ifligy cut down and burned in a stroel ) onnro. and it was not until after tlu flames had died nway that the oxcitomonl ubaidod. The ovontcallcd forth many andvarioui lommonts. Ever since the killing of Dr , VIcKuno there has boon varying opin > ona as to the degree of guilt resting upor ) r. Cross , but there has boon no rio. once offered him , not oven on the nighi > f the killing , when ho was taken from lis house right through the crowd , tc ail , and since that ho has walked the troots , being out on bail , without anj apparent offer of interference from any- jody. Although there is a strong feel ng among many against Dr. Cross , ' 01 there has not boon before anj expression of this save in casual corn-or ation , so that it Boemi strange that sucli an affair should occur months 'after the exciting event itself. With sonic this ofligy has caused a reaction rather in Dr. Jross' favor , while others expressed .homsolyos . yesterday as fooling that il was a disgrace to the city , and a misrep- osontation of the feelings of many who eel Dr. Cross is guilty , and yet who wont to BOO him punished as the result eli i legal and fair trial , and not as the re- ult of a howl. Some , however , wore lad to see an expression of this sort. Of ourao , among Dr. Cross' supporters and rionds it was denounced in oittor terms , 'ho ofligy was , in fact , given more talk uring the day , and was the subject of lore discussion than it really merited. Vhilo it was evidently the work in part t least of some intelligent persons , and ot mpro boys , yet it reflects little credit o their "sand" and manhood. If they 10 as indignant and warlike as they vould make people believe they are , they ave had scores of chances to wreak their ongeanco long before this on the victim f their wrath himself , and while all mob aw is to bo deprecated , bad as it it , it is ot BO cowardly as the ofligy business , 'hat in more on a par with anonymous ettora. NO MEBOY FOB MERGER. ChoU. P. IBOJH Kicking OH the Hos pital Scheme. The assessment for the hospital fund , which is to bo deducted from the pay of very U. P. employe , as was mentioned n THE BEE of yesterday , has created uitoastir. The following question , 'How do you fool in regard to this fund , nd what objections liavo you , if any ? " was yesterday put to a largo number of he employes residing in this city. Each nd every ono ono answered that if Dr. ilorcor was succeeded by some other rtiyaioian they would quietly submit , but Eho is to remain and control the hoa- lital that they would willingly bo parties o the opposition of this assessment juat aa soon as such opposition could bo or ganized. It is supposed on this side of the ivor that the chief surgeon will moot us first opposition in the U. P. shops in ) raaha , where the same originated ona 'oar ' and six months ago , when ho tried o force the assessment for this fund ' but failed.
