Collins , alias Patterson , \\as executed - cutod hero to-day for the murder of Bank er Cumminga , in 1870. The hanging took place in the jail yard , in the presence of a largo crowd , during a heavy rain-storm , Collins was game to the end , and per sisted in dcclai ing hib innocence of the crime for which lie sullorod the death penalty. His pulse boat only 11 min utes after the drop fell. TUB STOUY or TIIK ritiMK. The crime for which Collins suffered the death penalty to-day was committed on September 1 , 1870. On that day the Eureka stage , which ran from Mooie'a Flat to No\ada City , O.U. , was stepped by two masked mou at n lonely part of the road about throe miles from Nevada City. There was u full complement of passengers. On the box-seat with the dm or was William F. Cummings , a bank er of Moore's Flat , and n female school teacher. Inside there wore thrco men , a women with her throe children , and a Chinaman. All those on the stage , ex cept the driver and the school teacher , nore made to come donn in tlu middle of the road and stand in a row with their hands up. Ono of the highwaymen , who was afterword proved to bo Doreoy , now serving a lifo term in S.in Quentin , searched the passengers , while the other Patterson , alias Collins stood guard with a double-barreled shotgun. The passengers made no rodistcnco , but the banker Cummings \\as not searched. Then the highwaymen went for the mail nut express matter. The last thing ho liaulcd out of the atngo boat \\aa a heavy valise. THE MVIiDKIl 01' CUMMINO1' . \Yhon Cummings caught sight of this , which uas his own valise , and contained two largo gold bars valued at § 7,000 , ho sprang forward , clutched it and said : "You wouldn't take all that a man has in the world , would you ? " The stago- robber made no response , but took a firmer hold on the valuable pri/o. Cum mings was a powerful man , and the strug gle between the two was desperate , the self-cocking revolver in the robber's hand being twice discharged. Meanwhile the throe men stood in the road like so many statues , and ollered no help. At the second shot Cummigs cried out despair ingly , "Havo I no friends hero ? " and fell , the robber bo nj on top. Cummings tried to draw his revolver , but the robber cot hold of it Then , making n last effort , Hie wounflod man rose to his feet , grasped the weapon of his assailant and was evid ently goating the bettor of him , when the second highwayman coolly stepped around from his previous position , took him at Cummings and iired. The heavy charge of the shotgun passed into the neck of the unfortunate man , killing him instantly. Tlio robbers then went on with their work of plunder. They got the two gold bars and about $500 in loosp coin. They forced tlio passengers to got into the stage , and were last .seen standing by the body of the murdered man. ON TIIK HODIIEUS' TRAIL. Howards amounting to $5,000 were of fered for the capture of the stage-robbers , but it was many months before any clew was obtained , so skillfully had the high waymen covered thsir tracks. The first clew was gained from a young woman who was staying at Nigger Tout , n notorious rious resort for outlaws in Nevada county , not far from the scone of the crimo. This waa two months after the murder. She described the appearance of two man who came to thn place on the night of Soptom- 1 , and were taken in and fed by the hostess , an old woman named Romargio. From the descriptions Detective Hume , of Wells , Fargo it Co. , and Capt. A ull , of San Francisco , decided that the man must bo Charles Dorsoy and John 0. Patterson , both ox-convicts. Dorsoy had boon a guerilla in Iho war in Missouri and Kentucky , and was regarded ai the most desperate man in State Prison at the time ho was serving his sentence. Patterson was his chum in prison , and their in timacy led th the suspicion that it was they who had committed the robbery and murder. With these clews the detectives inter viewed all the ox-convicts they could roach ; photographs of the two men were scattered broadcast over the country , with descriptions of the men and the royal rewards oflorod , but no trace of the fugitives was gained for a long limp. Finally the detectives hoard of them in Tombstone and other quarters of Arizona spending money in lavish style , but there all clews vanished. FOUND IN hT. LODIK. The murder mystery remained un solved until Juno 20. 1882 , when Detec tive Iluino received a letter from the chief of police of St. Louis , Baying ho hat Pattoruon in custody there on a charge o burglary. Capt , Aull , with Capt. Ho told how lie had plannec the robbery , how they camped for day in the vicinity of the place , waiting for a stage which was known to contain treasure uro , and how when the struggle cam over the valise , Patterson ended it witl the shotgun. Ho was sent over to San Quentin for lifo , while Patterson alias Collins , vras convicted of murder in th first degree and sentenced to bo hanged With the exception of the story of"BIac ] Bart , " the poetical highwayman , who i now serving out s term of aoven years in San Quentin , this long pursuit and cap turo of Patterson ana Dorsey 'furnishe the rae t singular page in the tago-rob bing annals of the stat ; * AMUSEMENTS , Mitchell an "Mlcnou" at the Opera House ftust Night , Maggie Mitchell has once raoro tickled tno fancies of Omaha theater goora Last evening she appeared at the opera house in "Jfignon , " nnd a lar o audience was present to greet her. Although Maggie Mitchell is nearly GO yean of age , yet ho lias loat none of her old-Umo fire and Ufa which IIRVO won for icr the plnudtts of the world. Ono cnn scarcely realize , as slio nppoaru before the 'oollighU in Btftgo dross , that she is an elderly l.uly , and yet n close inspection ol icr features reveals the fact that Father Tnno h.ia been liiigoring around her. More pirticularly is this noticeable inter tor voice , which , at times , cracks anil jrows hoarse. From this on they were inoro onthuflfastic , and at the close of the third act thu little favorite was ngain naked to stop before the curtain.
