News wni brouglit tu this city last evening of a horrible tragedy which took place yesterday morning on tlio farm ol Patrick Buckley , nbout tin cu miles south east of Papillion , in which John Brad ford waa chopped to death by ixn nxo in thu hands of u follow workman named Jeaso McCarty. The two \voio at work in tlio woods felling trees. Bradford hail the con tract for clearing a piece of ground , and sub lota poition of the job tu McCarty and a man named O.un , who was present at the time of the murder , and waa the only witness bo the blood curdling sceno. According to the story of Cain , ho and McCarty foiled a largo oak tree yesterday morn ing , which Bradford claimed ho had re served for his own use. AH the tree full to the giound , Bradford , who waa in another portion of the field , approached the two men and demanded that they cease work on thn tree , which they re fused to do. Bradford then became en raged and rushed at McCarty , who was engaged in trimming the fallen trea. Bradford had a large maul in his hands , and as ho advanced toward McCarty ho raised it as if to strike. McCarty drew back his ax and warned him not to ad vance , but ho paid no attention to the warning and rushed madly at McCarty. Just ai Bradford was in readiness to strike McCarty , the ax which McCarty hold was _ brought down upon Bradford's neck , indicting a horrible and mortal wound. The jugular vein vas severed , and Bradford was nearly decapitated by the blow. The murdered man did not speak , but turned and started in the direction of Buckley's house , followed \ty Mc Carty , still brandishing the ax. lie talked a distance of twelve or fifteen yaids , where ho stopped and looked back at his mur derer , raised his hands in a pitiful man ner , and fell to the ground a corpse. McCarty at once hastened to Papillion and gave himself up to Sheriff Spearman , who , in the absence of the coroner , wont to the scene of the murder and took charge of the remains , and after impan- nulling a jury proceeded to hold an in quest. The only important -witness was the man Cain , who was an oyo-witnens to the horrible scene , and ho testified in substance as abovo. lie endeavored in every way to shield the defendant and make it appear that he committed the act in self-defense. Notwithstanding this , however , the jury found that John Bradford c.uno to his death by a blow from an ax in the hands of Jesse Mc Carty , and that the not was wilful. 'l\0 ' ( if the Jurymen remarked , after the vouliol had boon romlvJ' dj that ho desired to see h' V noli on general priii- ciploc , no is regarded in that commu- i Ility an a very hard case , ami the people arp greatly wrought up over his atiocious crime. Of the muidercd man very little is known , lie moved to Papillion last spring , and has boon engaged us a farm hand by a number nf farmers during his residence there. Ho was between thirty and foi ty ycara of ago , and was married. McCarty will have a preliminary hear ing before .fudge Jjangdon to-day , and will undoubtedly bo held to await the action of the grand jury.
