Xorther 1'aciflc preferred , which sold un to
121J nnd 52J per cent , respectively. During
the forenoon Kansas & ToxnRY abash and
Texas Pacific dropped to 19 , 14 and 111. } per
cent , respectively. The drop had but slight
elTect on other active thores , and at 2 o'clork
the whole market waa strong once more and
on the advance. The market reports that
condition to the close. A feature of the mar
ket was the rapid recoveries which followed
the repeated attacks by bears. An advance
near the close was stimulated by reports that
the Iowa pool trouble were progressing sat
isfactorily towards a settlement. Compared
with last night the closing prices are

markets wore active .and on several days
highly excited during the week. Trading
was entirely speculative , and largely on ac
count of the local crowd , and although there
was a fair oharo of outside orders the decline
in prices was not arrested. Wheat at the
closing prices of to-day shows a drop of lie
in the May delivery in ten days , corn 8c ,
while provisions are practically unchanged ,
There are no new facts of supply and demand
to improve prices in wheat. The largest deal-
era are actively engaged In hammering prices
downward , and SO and U5icents for wheat is
freely prndicted. There are 40,000,000 bush-
elain store. For wheat there is no consump
tive call , and it nooms that prices must go
still lower before buyers will be tempted to In
vest.
Provisions wore firm , being well mtstninod
by the packers. They are openly bullish and
talk a dollar higher a barrel for mesa pork.
: Shipments of hvga continue not heavy for the
v ,
-1 season , and of an inferior quality , as cam-
pared with former years. The supply of lard
and mess exceeds former ycarH largely , and
the demand Is no greater. The boat statist !
ral authorities agree that most of the crop of
wheat and corn of 16S3 Is now in store , and
the tone of brokers' opinions Is that a few
week ? , or days perUape , will definitely deter
mine whether tlto crop can bo sold at higher
or lower figures. Speculation in the 18K1

May for Juno wheat.
General business , on the whole , in improv
ing. Iron nillln ore starting up , and the de
mand for stool rails is excellent. Many
bankers and merchants take tills as an Indica
tion of a prosperous year. Dry goods , crock
ery , boots and shoes , clothing , and grocery
men report an improving market and better
business. The liquidation of small firms , and
larger ones ax well , ix pronounced by several
financial authorities us about over. Money to
the amount of many millions is seeking Invest
ment , and the bond market Lore and In New
York Is very buoyant. It IB expected that
stocks will show an Improvement , except cer
tain lines , from this cause alone. Altogether
it may bo nMd that while signs of better times
