A. rooms are large enough to hold all the friends of temper ance in this county , but probably all who will find it convenient to bo present. O. R. Allen , of 0. R. Allen & Co. , the * - / map publishers , is in the city arranging i' for publiohlng a map of the county. There is great need of such a map , and if the firm give PotUwattamie as accur ate and complete a map as they have given others , and they doubtless will , or better , this county should give the enter prise a most willing and hearty support. It in also probable that the firm will publish a map of the city , a want long felt , surely. Mr , Allen Is a practical surveyor and for the past ten years has been compiling maps of counties , cities , and towiu , and ii thoroughly expe rienced. F. M. The announcement in yesterday's BBB | of the tofiisal of the county board to nl- the foes for witnesses for the do- fcnso in criminal cases before justices of ' the peace , has caused no little comment , and much indignation is expressed at the action of the board. Heretofore all such witnesses have been paid , and the just ices not know ing that a special order had to bo entered by them , of course ncgloct- d to do so. Hereafter it will bo under- teed , and the order will bo entered in uturo canes. Itis rather hard , however , n those who have lost time and boon to xpcnso during the past throe or four nonlhs. THE NEW JAIL , H IN l'1aulH ( Beginning Alrcndjr to Show Up. TIIK BKK has already pointed outsomo if the defects of the now city jail , and .ho criticisms made upon it are already toing proven to bo just. Now the com- nt ilvor is found to bo almost as bad as no floor at all. The cement is thin , and : an bo easily broken through. Already n several places there are Btich breaks , .nd the effect of water will soon cause till further damaqo. The floor is ao uneven , too , that in places there are rcg- ilar basins holding any water there may bo. In ono of the cells there is just such \ depression under the water closet , and ' , ho filth is already accumulating and itagnatingthoro. It will not bo long bo- 'ore the now cells have the same horrible tench as the old ones , unless some marked changes are mode. A cloao inspection - spoction of the jail , its insecurity and many disadvantages will convince- any ino that there is need of still further ihangos in its structure. DENISON DOTS , Accidents at the lllnk A Iieap Vcnr Dance A Oloho Gucas and Other Interesting IUJIUB , The skating rink at Donison seems to bo well attended by saints , if it is true hat the feet of the ungodly stand on ilippory places. There have boon a number of falls there recently , two quite serious. Miss Annu Wightman , ono of the victims , is now recovering. Another , Mamio Knaul , had her limb so badly injured that she has suffered in tense pain , and her physician says that while no bones are broken , yet the in jury is just as bad. The Donison ladies arranged for a leap year dance at the opera house , to take place Wednesday evening , a big supper , a fine band , and all needfuls for n good time being provided by them. As an advertising dodge one of the merchants offered a sealskin cap to the ono guessing nearest to the actual num ber of seeds in a pumpkin , which was placed on exhibition uncut. The guesses numbered 542 , and ranged from 20 to 10,000. George Cornwall won the cap by the remarkable guess of 740 , the pumpkin on being opened proving to contain just 748 seeds. T. J. Garrison has sold his bay mare "Maud" to parties in Lincoln , Nob. , for $400. The Crawford County Bulletin says : "Tho attorneys speak very highly of Judge Lyman , and unite m predicting for him an eminently satisfactory career on the bench. " A man named Donnelly , living in Washington township , was so badly nipped by oold while driving homo across the prairie , that ono foot and one hand have had to bo amputated. Attend Casady , Orcutt it French's great sale , to make room for spring stock. Prices way down. Generous Givers , Robinson Bran , give away to their patrons some very rich goods. The twelfth annual distribution of gifts by Messrs. Robinson Bros. , has resulted as on previous occasions , with everybody being satisfied with the fairness of the methods chosen. The first gift , a diamond mend ring , a perfect gem , wont to W. G. ' Darlaud. No. 804. The second gift , a beautiful goldi watch , vras to Col. A. Cochrano , hii number being 51,080. The third gift waa an elegant French clock , given to W. J. Thompson , No. 52,481. This house lays claim not only to being the oldest in the city , but its roliab lily is in keeping with its age , and the confidence felt that they always moot fully every expectation made , is strength ened each year This is the twelfth of those novel distributions and there is yet to bo hoard the first complaint. lUglitoouoly Indignant , To the Editor of THE BKK. The officials of several cities in Jr' state assembled at Dos Moines recently , They seem to have made a base and or- bitrary attempt to wrest the power from the people and vest it in themselves. In other words the asucmbly of mayors on that occasion , seemed desirous of saying to the people of the different cities , "You have not aufticient intelligence to select your own officers for certain positions , While you may possess enough common Bonso to select a suitable man for the of. fico of mayor , you are not capable of BO- lecting the best man marshal , and hence , the appointment of that officer should bo ) | loft to the . " Now mayor. are wo sure that wo shall have rer always the best or > ei eu a good man for mayor , and if not- withstanding a Aho caution tliat may bo ) exercised , one uJ rorthy to fill the p'oei tion , is elected , what would bo the na tural result us to the marslmlship ? Attain that august body aueined not , only ambitious for an increase of power , but they must go beyond that and insist that a bill ba passed by which the com mon council should fix the amount of their own salaries , thus opening the way for a system of robbery now totally un warranted by the people. The whole scheme is certainly inconsistent with the righto , the intoreuu and the welfare of a free and intelligent people and ought to receive at their hands Uio rebuke it merit * . FELL INTO THEIR OLUTOHES An Omnhix Mnn Dropr * Ills Holt on a Council IMufTrt Gambling Table. Ono of Omaha's citizens is reported as the latent fat victim of Council Bluffs gambling. Ho canio to this city with a little over $500 in his pocket to transact ooino busincH hero , and foil into the com pany of some of the crtppors and sharks who are hanging about the city , despite Mayor Bowman's gentle proclamation to leave or bo arrostod. Getting their vic tim pretty full of "budge" ho was in | geniously steered into a game in a gam bling ! houao on Upper Broadway , and there ho was initiated into a knowledge of "freeze out" or some other game , the i lesson j costing him $400. When his last I cent ( was gene it was Iftte , and without money enough to buy a bed at a hotel , irti irh hung around and passed the time as bent ho could until the tiit morning hours came , and ho could got in communication with friends who relieved his necessities. Of course the city will next month got about ton per cent of this ] money as its share of the profits of the establishment , under the pretense of tlt fine , or a forfeiture of bond , or some thing ! of that sort , and so the city offi cials and officers will make no fuss about this : sort of business. In no city in the is there allowed such free-for- country a - - all chance for grabs and gouges. It is high time that the bettor class of citi zens , who are already indignant about such daily occurrences should take some action by which such houses should bo brought up with a sharp turn. It scorns as if the gamblers should bo pretty well satisfied with being allowed to run witli open doors , with signs , with glaring street lights , and have their tables visited by officials. But now added to all this , some are using capporo , stcorors and bad whisky to cot money still easier. The city council has made a farce of closing up the gambling houses. The records still boar a resolution paused last summer , the utter ignoring of which should cause the blush to como to their chocks. The incident above narrated ia but ono of many , and these events of daily oc currence are known to none bettor than the very mon in whoso hands the power has-been given to suppress the nefarious business. HIS OwFlAULT , The Jury Dcoldo that Michael Wur : r Ought Not to Have Tried to CrohH the TrnolcVhon a Train was Coming. The suit of Michael Wur/.ur against the Chicago & Northwestern Railway company lias just boon tried in Crawford county. The case originated in Carroll county , and was an action to recover damages sustained by plaintiff by reason of being run into by a train. The acci dent occurred in Carroll City in 1882. Wurzor , who is a farmer , was in a wagon with his son-in-law and a boy , and as they came up to the track a train was just passing. They waited until the train had passed over tha wagon road about eight foot , and then the team was driven on to _ the track with the intention of crossing. The train stopped and began backing up , so that the cars came upon the team , the horses becoming fright ened , and as they plunged the wagon was tipped over , the occupants thrown out and two of them badly hurt. Wurzor first claimed that the company was negli gent in not having a sign-board on the crossing , but Judge Loof bourow last fall decided that this complaint was not good , as Wurzor know there was a train there , and hence needed no sign to warn him. The cause was continued , and now on trial the jury has decided that it was Wur/or's own negligence , that ho teek the risk himself , and that the company was not therefore liable for damages.
