the announcement that the trouble over Utah
business had boon settled by the formation of

Shortly after 1:30 : p. m. fallmcs In the grain
trade had a depressing effect. The decline ,
however , broucht in buying orders , and the
market became again firm. Atflr2lfi { : Unbn
Pacific was purchased freely up to 77J , which
affected the general list favorably , and buying
became quito spirited towards the close , and
a confident touo characterized the dealings.
The improvement was b&sod on official confir
mation of the reported formation , of a pool by
the Union Pacific , Chicago , Burlington &
Quincy , and Denver & Hio Gran Jo roads , ind
by the announcement that the Chicago , Bur
lington & Quincy directors , at a mooting to
day , had appointed a committee to meet a
committee representing the roads forming the
new western alliance , with a view to affecting
a settlement. In the first sales the market
fell J to g per cont. Speculation closed firm.
As compared with last night , closing prices
are J to § per cent lower , except for Denver ,
Missouri Pacific , Union P.icilic , and Western
Union , which are J to i per cent higher.
