"Doctor Stollinft is dead. " These sad words , as they passed from lip to lip yes- lorday , cast n gloom over the counte nance of every ono upon whoso car they chanced to fall. Rov. George F. Stolling , D. D. , pnstot of the English Lutheran church , of this city , died yesterday , of congestion ol the brain , after a brief illness of throe days. days.Death Death at all times is an unwelcome visitor , and its presence is dreaded and feared by the masses , and yet how much moro awful it scorns when a man like unto Doctor Stolling is stricken down , and in n few short hours is called from this llfo into the glory nnd grandeur of the eternal kingdom. On Friday afternoon lost , Doctor Stol ling was taken with n chill , and on Satur day ho was conflnod to his bod. On Sun day lie was feeling much bettor and was supposed to bo suffering from a aovoro cold. On Monday morning his condition had changed so materially that fears were entertained for the worst and a consulta tion of physicians was hold , but before noon congestion had taken firm hold upon Ilia brain and it was known by the at tending physicians that his life work was done and ere many hours ho would bo at rest. _ , AllnightMonday night ho toiscd upon a bed of pain , the pangs of fever outing at Ilia heartstrings , until yostorda , at 7IO : ! , just as the sun roao abovp the east ern horizon , shedding his beautiful golden rays over all the earth , the soul of Doctor Stolling , rose from this earth and wont to dwell forever in the mansions in thoskica , nut1 the weary and mourning watchers stood alone in the presence of death. Doctor Stolling removed with his fam ily to Omaha in the month of November , 1881. Since his advent in this city he had become acquainted with a largo num ber ef our citizens , and vrhoovor ho has coino in contact with , no matter in what relation , haa learned to love him. IIo was , it sooins to us , a model man in every respect. Aa a father , ho was over kind and indulgent , as a husband over true and noble ; as a citizen over upright and honorable ; and as a minister of the gospel - pol and laborer in the vineyard of the Lord , over faithful and valient. Like a true soldier , ho died in the discharge of his duties , standing manfully at his post , and striving to perform the work which the master had given him to do. In the pulpit or out ho vras over the same , good , honorable , upright , kind and generous man. If there v.'as ono man in Omaha moro than other , universally loved , respected and honored , that man was Doctor St ( ill ing. Since his advent in this city ho haa labored with untiring energy for the up building of tlio Lutheran church and the salvation of souls. Through his instru mentality a beautiful church edifice has boon ornctpd , and which will always otandwith its lofty spire pointing heaven ward , as a monument to the good man who lias passed over the river. Ho had boon greatly troubled for the welfare of the church , and after a severe strain of months his strength tjavo way. If every brick in that building , which ho has struggled so manfully to build , had a voice , that voice would to-day bo raised to high heaven in praise and admonition of him who , like the Master of old , "lay down his lifo for his sheep. " Ocorgo F. Stolling was born in Stolzo- nan on the Wcaor , kingdom of Ilanovor , Germany , on the 19th day of November , 1827 , hence at the time of hio death ho was a little moro than GG years of ago. At an early ago ho came to this country , and on the 20th day of March , 1857 , at Springfield , Ohio , ho was married to Miss Cornelia Jane May , who lives to mourn his loss. Twelve children were born to them , nine of whom are still liv ing. IIo was admitted to the ministry in 1857'aml 1ms over since boon a faith ful worker. lip had never had a day's sickness in his lifo until that of last sum mer in Urn city. Since that time , however - over , | io has boon slowly failing , und many an anxious friend with tear-bo- dimmed eyes has watched his slowly bonding form and tottering stop. For twouty-sovon years ho has been ono of the foremost workers in the Eng lish Lutheran church , and was , at the time of his death , president of the Gen eral synod of the United States. In his death the church in this city loses a pastor whoso shoes will bo exceed ingly hard to fill , and every member tear fully doploroa the loss. A HKMAIUCAULE ESCAPE. Jyfre.
