" "Well , my son , " said the old theatrical manager yesterday , "I hope _ you have boon profiting by my suggestions , nnd nro not cherishing any ambition to become nn actor or to write n play. " "Yes , sir , " replied tHe student of hu man nature , "Ihavo taken your words to heart. I am contented now with my lot in lifo nnd do not aspire to bo n 1'ooth or n Jofl'erson ; liny , not oven n Hartley Campbell. " ' Very well. Go on ns you have begun and a great and happy career lies before you. Generations to come will bless your name because you refrained from writing any _ plays There nro _ other things w Inch ought not to bo vrritton , oven in newspapers , but I do not propoao to give any advice ns to the government of these United States , nor of the fourth ward. Lot us stick to the theatrical profession , What can 1 toll you about to-day ? " The student humbly suggested that ho would prefer to have the manager follow the bent of his own tcnuVr fancy. ' 'Well " said ho "while , , wo nro hunting for n suggestion 1 know of atilaep whole they know ho\v to make a sethictivo con coction of spirits , milk , sugar nnd nut meg. Docs this picture please theel" "It docs. " "Then let us away. " And they awayed. And as they were .waying they passed n beautiful wo- nan dressed with n direct and evident t ijn ; of knocking out the lilies of the eld in the fast round. She wai sitting i n carriage ; n benutiful cross-eyed pug og was by her side , and n cast-Dtcol oaehman was on the box scat. The , dy's face was noticeable. It was white ven as the imago of death. On each heek was a brilliant red blotch , nnd un- lor each eye was n black ' lino. Her eye- ashes were also black'as the darkness of igypt. Her hair was of the color that undo Laura of Avignon famous , but is o\v to bo had in bottles. "Look at that woman , " remarked the manager. "Thcro is our subject. " " 1 don't understand. " "Well , sir , she is 'made up. ' That is , iho is painted nnd whitewashed nnd has osmotic on her eyes. Shu has made orsolf up with n desire to look pietty , ut the result is that she looks hideous , 'ho reason is very simple : She doson't now how to make up in day-time , 'hero nro thousands of women going round Now York every day painted nnd towdered in a way that mnkcs n clover ctrcss laugh. The trouble is this : They o not realize that a day mako-up and night should bo dif- ight mako-up altogether - 'oront. Any one can see that there is u 'ifl'eronco between gaslight and sun- ight , I suppose. Now , of courae , an .ctross who is preparing to go on the itago at night makes her face up to have certain appearance under certain con- itions. An actress' face , made up for ho stage , is n ghastly sight when exposed o the glare of the sun. She must make t very white to neutralize the eflect of bo yellow gaslight. Again , she draws n > lack line under each eye. What for ? iVhy , because the footlights which shine up from below destroy the shadow of her 'owor lashes and make the eye look Hat. ! o she makes an artificial shadow with osmotic , India ink or burnt cork. "Tho dear ladies in the front of the louse study all this through their opera glasses. They go home , and the next morning they come out in the sunlight made up. They forget that the chsrac- er of the illumination to which they are ubjocted is wholly different from that of ho stage. The light is a hundred tiuieti a brilliant as gas-lightand much whiter , .lid moro of it shines up from below.1 "But I have aeon actresses looking the amo way in daytime. " "So have I , nnd the moro fo ls tltey , 'or they ought to know bettor. I have leon others , though , who know how to nako up both by day and by night. 1 lon't want to mention any names , but ho cleverest of them all at thia art is n , Tonian who is less distinguished by her .oting . than by her writing , and less , per- nips , by either than by her ability as u i.imter. " "But , " remarked the student , "people n the stage do not always hav-o to moke ip BO us to look pretty. Sometimes they mist aaauuio appearances totally -different 'rom their proper countenance. " "Now , my dear boy , you are coming own to thofloul of the art of making up. "ew actors know this art in ito perfection , iut all must have a good knowledge of t. 1 can give you a few general ideas ibout it that may amuse you. Tliomako- up of a man who has only to look well it fury dimple. Dry powder to make the : ace white , a dab of roug-e on the cheek , a black line under the eye , and ho is fixed , ) t course when a man growa old ind is still playing youthful parts 10 must spend more -euro ov-or hit mako-up in ardor to conceal aa .well as possible the ravages of time , Now , then , we'll suppose tlmt a youiij. nan wants to appear ait a person of , say , (5. ( Almost instintiyely ho decides upon tv brunette complexion , becaueo it ia dif. icult for a young man to look older ii : : laxon hair. Ho begins by ( hxrlioiiintciiis 3iitirojcouiitcnancoif ho is fair , by meant ) f the .proper tint and 'greane paint. Then ho , puts plenty of red on his choeku carrying it well up around the corners af the eyes and well down on tlio jaw , ' 'hen , with n stick of dark griiURo paint , o deepens the linen running froiu the : ioso to the corners of the moutk , and .Ico the lines running from the corners if itho mouth downward. "Uemombcr , however , that the iiuli iduftl character of the casemugt bo con lidorftd. There nro n hundred litth .onch&a that on artist am add with grcni iifoct. I iiovoc saw a young man mort clover at this business than Mr. A , Wil kinson , formerly in the Standard Thcutri comic o > era company. Ho wan fuiU young not yet 30 but , gifted with i peculiar voice , ho could make up to Ipol any ago from 40 upwards with perfection What 1 was about to nay , however , wu that , for instance , the * oyeH may bo" liltlo to prominent for n man of 4J ( That la , they look to frouh and bright They can bo made to appear sunken by light coat of dark grease paint undc the browfi , on the lids , an also under tlio oyea , Tito in ; iority of actors use gray , but liuvo observed that brown pioduci's better and moro natural eiiVjot. Th forehead may bo too largo and white Thie can bo remedied by touching a fo light wrinkles , The black wig is the put ou , and the general appearance often improved by putting a little whil on the htir above the temples , giving tinge of gray. If the young man ti appears too youthful , ho can add HIIIO iido whijkort , which will ago him coi Bidornbly , and if they arc not enough ho can wear n full board , which usually suf fices. " "Tho way in which young inonpr men of thirty-five or forty look old strikes mo ns being moro remarkable. " "Well , I don't know that it is anymore moro didicult than the production of the effect I have just described. I cnn ex plain it to you , however. The actor whom I have before mentioned played in "Pa- tienco' the Major , nnd wns moat ndmirn- bly made up. The greater portionof the ollect the fundamental work -was pro duced with brown grease paint. 1 lo laid on his entire face a coat of it. Then ho made the color darker nil nrouiul the oyea nnd in the hollow of the cheeks. The chcok-bono was brought out with n touch of flesh-color on the prominent part. The lips were lot nlone. They nro generally icddcncd n little for n youthful nppoarnuce. The wrinkles wcio marked in the usual way , nnd the brows nnd lashes were inndo gray. "Now , M. Meziores , who ia a fine , stnl wnrt man of hardly moro than -10 yenrs , with n luxuriant head of black hair and a pair of hondsomo black eyes , ia another artist at making up. Ilo ia frequently scon ns nn old mnn , nnd his appearance , aided by his movomonta , is truly nrtistio. Ho makes up in n totally dill'eront man ner from that junt described. Ilo tnkes nil the lifo nnd color out of his fnco by n profuse distribution of white powder. Then ho brings out the portion of the cheeks running donn the aide of thonoso nnd mouth with rougo. This , with n heavy wrinkle drawn down o.ich side , makes his checks look fat and llabby. The chin is brought out with rouge nlso. The usual wrin kles of the forehead are then put in very lightly , nnd nlso the crow's feet nt the corners of the eyes. One great peculiarity of Meziores' mako-up is the wny ho treats his eyes. Instead of sinking thorn with dark paint ho whitens them. 11 is eyelashes nro made perfectly whito. Under this treatment the eyes become Hat and small. Meziores keeps them about half open , nnd this inci eases the delusion. Per the line of villainous , cunning , licentious old men which he plnya this make-up is simply perfect. It innkos him nn c lib to old man , with leer ing , treacherous eyes. " "Do you think of any other remarka ble instances of making up ? " "Oh , there are plenty of them to bo seen every day. _ Not always the best ac tors are best at it. Mr. Booth's mako-up as King Lear is nn exceedingly good one , but 1 think that Mr. Barrett's , when ho played the part nt Booth's theatre , wns much moro striking. His ctl'ect was gained , however , by the use of u wig and board made of n very fine quality of llulfy gray hair. Dear dcad-and-gono Harry Beckett's make-up as Harvey Dull' , in the 'Shaughran , ' wns line , nnd Harry Mon tague's face ns Captain Dudley Smooth , in 'Money , ' was n study. Ho wore a full beard nnd didn't look n bit like him self. It made his female nclinircr.smo.in , and they didn't like him in the part one bit , but the whole thing was artis tic. Carloton's make-up in the last not of the opera of 'Rip Van Winkle' vrns excellent , though , of course , JolTor- son's in the piny is much finer. Fred Leslie is the only innn who over mndo up the Duke in 'Olivetto' nrtistically. Marie Prescott once plnyed Mother Fadot in 'Fanchon' with Maggie Mitchell , nnd her face was a work of nrt. Character make- upsgivo the beat opportunities. Pointed , crimped and swelled noses are grunt features in this lino. They nro pro duced by gumming on pieces of pink cot ton in the oropor places. Before wo go nnd seek another concoction of milk , sugar and spirits , I want to say one thing about the making-up of minstrel men. They always hnvo big red lips ; did you ever notice that ) " The student admitted that ho hnd. /'Well , " said the manager , "did you over see a colored man with rod lips ? Nof , much ; their lips are the same color as the rest of their faces. I never could see why minstrel men did not BCCIU to know this fact. They may redden their lips for ofl'oct ; but the truth is that in making up , just as in nil other arta noth ing in good which is not true to nature. " Send Thorn Hack. BOSTON , January 8.
